this is a blog where we discuss reptile and amphibian pokémon and their biology, ecology, and husbandry. my name is k and i'm a trainer who has studied all of these things. below are some frequently asked questions to help get you started.
what is herpetology?
herpetology, comprised of the root words herpetos (meaning "to creep") and logy (meaning "study of"), is a branch of zoology that focuses on non-avian reptile and amphibian pokémon.
why are reptile and amphibian pokémon lumped together in the same field of study?
simply put, science evolves just like pokémon do. when we first began studying pokémon, we didn't have access to the same technology and information that we have now. non-avian reptile and amphibian pokémon were placed in the same field of study thanks to superficial similarities such as their ectothermic nature. in part, a prejudice against reptile and amphibian pokémon played a role in this, as many early professors simply did not have much interest in them or even outright disliked them. today, that bias has changed a lot and we've studied these pokémon more thoroughly. we now know that reptile and amphibian pokémon aren't really that closely related and have many differences, and most herpetologists have a specialization in one over the other.
wait, bird pokémon are reptiles?
yes! bird pokémon are one of few living classifications of dinosaur pokémon. these pokémon fall into a category we call "archosaurs," which includes not only bird pokémon and their ancestors but also other dinosaur pokémon like meganium, pterosaur pokémon like aerodactyl, true dragon pokémon such as charizard (as an aside, there’s debate as to whether these pokémon are highly derived pterosaur pokémon or a sister taxon to that group), and crocodilian pokémon like skeledirge. however, bird pokémon are traditionally considered their own field of study called ornithology. this blog will not really discuss bird pokémon for this reason. similarly, non-avian dinosaur, true dragon, and pterosaur pokémon as well as pokémon like lapras (which is kind of confusing taxonomically) all tend to fall in the lap of paleontology and not my area of study, though i do know some information about those species that i will share when i can.
how do we define a pokémon species?
this is an excellent question that really depends on who you ask. there are many different species concepts, some with more merit than others. in the past, physical characteristics and reproductive isolation were primary tools that we used to identify and classify species, but these tools had weaknesses- for example, the dramatic physical changes that many pokémon undergo as they grow up led to early pokémon professors mistaking juveniles and adults, especially in the fossil record, for different species- this is why we colloquially call it "evolution" when a pokémon reaches a new developmental milestone. many species of pokémon can also interbreed or reproduce asexually, which makes reproductive isolation a critera that's difficult to fulfill. today, things like genetic testing are the most common tools we use to classify living pokémon, although there is often still intense debate over whether or not things like some regional forms are subspecies or full species and we still use anatomical information to classify pokémon when we can’t get dna from them.
are all stages of a pokémon's life considered the same species?
yes! we use different names for the juveniles and adults, but they are all the same organism. for example, calling a clodsire's offspring a larval clodsire would be just as accurate as calling it a wooper. it's kind of like how we use child, teenager, and adult for different stages of humans' lives, but the actual species (human) doesn't change during any of those.
how is this blog organized?
every original post i make will have the tags #pokémon, #pkmn irl, and #.txt. responses to asks will be tagged with #answers. the species of pokémon discussed in a post will be tagged as well as the relevant life stages and the regions in which that pokémon is native. so for example, if i make a post about paldean wooper, that post will have the tags #clodsire, #wooper, and #paldea. however, i won’t tag pokémon mentioned in the post that aren’t the focus in the hopes of not putting irrelevant results in people’s searches.

[stuff in brackets is the real-life k speaking (call that k-fabe breaking, HEY-O). i hold a relevant degree, am continuing my education online through relevant institutions, and have a couple years of hands-on husbandry experience with various snakes, lizards, turtles, salamanders, and frogs. my favorite herpetofauna are the giant salamanders, which are the inspiration for clodsire and quagsire. i am not, however, an expert by any stretch of the imagination. my goal here is to talk about my headcanons for pokémon and tie in real-life herpetological facts and concepts with the information presented in the games (although i will take some creative liberties with game data here and there). i hope to get people excited about the real-life reptiles and amphibians i use as inspiration as well as the ones in pokémon, but more than that i’m here to have fun and combine my interests. this is more of a headcanons blog than a roleplay blog, but my intention is to treat all my posts as though they were real biology posts.]
