Glasgow Women’s Library

Collective Architecture won a limited competition to redevelop a Category B’ listed library in Bridgeton, Glasgow for The Glasgow Women’s Library. The library, built in 1903, is one of seven “Carnegie” libraries donated to the city. A local landmark, the building is grand in appearance with feature bays, intricate ornamentation and beautifully carved statues.

The Counted

The Guardian has begun a project called The Counted which aims to document the underreported and often unreported incidents of people killed by police and law enforcement. The crowdsourced and news reported data will facilitate an effort to provide transparency and accountability to policing in the United States. As of June 2nd, 2015, 470 individuals have been killed by the police this year.

San Francisco’s Data Comes to Life in New Artwork

A captivating new public artwork can now be seen at 350 Mission Street in San Francisco. Described by the artist Refik Anadol as a parametric data sculpture, the work draws upon data from the city of San Francisco to produce abstract, dynamic visualizations. The project seeks to “make the invisible visible,” according to Anadol, and to propose an integrated relationship between architecture and media arts. Visible from the street in the glass-enclosed lobby of the SOM-designed tower, the installation works in tandem with the architecture to engage the public realm and to create a memorable urban space. New York City is one of the most filmed Cities in the world. Movies, television shows, web series, they all want a piece of the Urban background in their films. In an interesting data visualization from Max Galka of Metrocosm, we get to explore an interactive map of many of these locations.

Based on film permit data from the Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre, and Broadcasting, this map displays the filming locations of all movie scenes, 17,241 in total, filmed between 2011 and 2013 (excluding those that were filmed in parks or on private property).

Breaking down the data, the 5 most popular filming neighborhoods for movies in NYC are:

* Midtown, Manhattan – 842 Permits * Williamsburg, Brooklyn – 771 Permits * Financial District, Manhattan – 644 Permits * Harlem, Manhattan – 432 Permits * Greenpoint, Brooklyn – 409 Permits
