Curated by the students of the 20th edition of the School of Curatorial Studies and Contemporary Arts, the show place to place will be inaugurate February 17th at 7 p.m. at Palazzo Malipiero, Venice.
After attending the 20th edition of the course, twenty-two young curators from all over Italy worked side by side with artists and people involved in the art world to stage a collective show. The exhibition involves seven National and International artists from Turin, Milan, Venice, Rome, Spain, Albania, Lithuania; the artist cooperative Guerrilla Spam, Dritan Hyska, Ryts Monet, Margherita Morgantin, Alice Pedroletti, Agne Raceviciute and Pablo Valbuena. The catalogue’s graphic design has been edited by Tankboys Studio of Venice.
Place to place traces a plural map of real and abstract locations in which art proves itself to be freely perceived, modified, (re)shaped according to the mood of the era it lives in; the result is a profoundly human and emotional geography that is reflected by contemporary art’s polysemy, raising questions about the places of our collective and personal memories, our affections and our origins.
The works on exposition discuss man’s constructive and destructive force towards nature, the architectural and structural space. Events, sensations and states of mind of contemporary man constantly oblige him to reinterpret the different meanings of the word “place” , making him go through an emotional and sensual journey in which the arrival point corresponds to the starting point. Memory’s affective dimension creates a material and ideological shelter from the world that surrounds us.
With the installation by Alice Pedroletti (Milan 1978), art gets closer to the territory’s social and economic reality, building a personal and familiar memory to it. Ryts Monet (Bari 1982): his prints superpose a range of meanings to the symbols and allegories of freedom to obtain an association of copy and original, while being political and ironic.
The documentation of the site specific art work made by Pablo Valbuena (Madrid, 1978) has the intention of transforming space through the perception of the spectator. The videos of Margherita Morgantin (Venezia 1971) reflect on antithetical atmospheres, such as artificial/natural, in Estonia’s economy, where the wilderness becomes of common consumption in favor of deforestation, while the photographs of Dritan Hyska (Albania, 1980) depersonalize the spaces in favor of a global urban vision, making them all look the same. The art group Guerrilla Spam (Firenze 2010) using Street Art language, cast and ironic look at the social locations in the art world: the market and its system. Agne Raceviuciute (Lithuania, 1988) camouflages affections and countries of origin for an inner analysis of genetic signs, her grandmother and unknown native lands.
The exhibition will also give the audience the chance to view the premiere of two art videos: The Magic Piper of Ishinomaki by Ryts Monet – put together with the support of the Tokyo Metropolitan Foundation for History and Culture, Tokyo Wonder Site - who faces the delicate situation of the city of Ishinomaki after the tsunami of 2011 and the Fukushima disaster. The second video, by the Lithuanian artist Agne Raceviciute, rediscovers her family roots and investigates the multifaceted habitat of her country of origin.
February 17th at 7 p.m. the music of Dj Marco Ciol will enliven the evening. On February 22nd , last day of the exhibition, artist Ryts Monet will present The Magic Piper Ishinomaki from 5:00 pm on.
The finissage will continue with the performance of the sound artist Marco Cecotto.
