I've been writing my first fanfic ever. It's a Miraculous Ladybug AU and diverges from canon after Season 3. I've posted 10 chapters on AO3 so far, but I have over 100k words written. I thought I'd post the first chapter here in case some people would be interested.

Chapter 1: New Guardian, New Rules
âWhat a night!â Marinette groaned, as she transformed back. âThat villain was so tough.â
Marinette shuffled over to her desk to get a cookie for Tikki from the jar she kept there. The little red kwami settled down onto the desk to munch on her pink macaroon.
âAre you ok, Marinette?â Tikki asked between bites.
âYes, Tikki,â Marinette said. âIâm just tired.â
Tikki finished her cookie and flew up to nuzzle against Marinetteâs cheek. Marinette closed her eyes and managed a small smile.
âThanks, Tikki,â Marinette said. âEvery fight seems to take more focus and concentration than ever.â
âWhat do you mean?â Tikki asked.
âOh, I donât know,â Marinette sighed. âI donât know. It just seems like things arenât working the way they used to. Chat Noir and I used to be so in sync. But over the last year, it seems like that has started slipping. We, or at least I, have to work harder to work in sync during each battle. Itâs exhausting.â
Marinette slowly changed into her pajamas and climbed up to her bed while talking to Tikki.
âEver since I became Guardian, itâs like our partnership has slowly degraded,â she mused, half to herself and half to Tikki. âBefore, we worked together without thinking. It was like a dance. We knew each otherâs moves and simply responded. But now⌠now itâs like weâre both dancing to a different tune and we keep tripping on each otherâs feet. I donât know what to do. We need to get our rhythm back.â
âBut you still beat all the akumas,â Tikki said.
âI know, Tikki,â Marinette said, âbut itâs not the same. It takes more effort and sometimes we miss each otherâs cues and the battles take longerâŚâ she trailed off.
âYou said that this started when you became the Guardian?â Tikki asked.
âYes,â Marinette replied. âIt wasnât so noticeable at first, though. I only realized it looking back. When I think back to the day I became Guardian, we were so in sync. We had to be. We were outnumbered against some of the most powerful Miraculous holders. But we worked so well together and we won that fight. Together. But just look at tonight. We miscommunicated, the original plan failed, and we had to retreat and recharge before returning to the fight.â
âEvery superhero makes mistakes, Marinette,â Tikki said. âYou canât be perfect all the time.â
âI know, Tikki,â Marinette said, laying back against her pillows. âBut it feels like it goes deeper. Itâs not just simple mistakes. It feels like our partnership isnât as strong as it once was. I miss the way we use to work together,â she sighed sadly.
âWhat do you think is stopping that from happening?â Tikki asked.
âWhat do you mean?â Marinette asked.
Tikki said, âObviously, you worked really well together before. Now you arenât. So that means that something has to have changed. What do you think that is?â
âI mean,â Marinette said, âit started when I became Guardian. So thatâs at least one thing.â
âI think that means a lot more than you realize,â Tikki told her.
âWhat do you mean?â Marinette asked.
âIt means the entire dynamic has changed,â Tikki said. âBecoming the Guardian isnât so simple as taking the box and a title. Itâs a powerful magical shift. When Master Fu was the Guardian, the magic was shaped according to his will. Now that you are Guardian, the box has changed and so has the magical dynamic.â
Marinette lay looking at the ceiling, processing what Tikki had said.
âSo,â she started slowly, âwhat youâre saying is that when Master Fu was around, his way of being Guardian kind of shaped the conflict, the battlefield. And now that I am Guardian, I have the power to change it?â
âEssentially, yes,â Tikki said. âThereâs a lot more to it than that, but thatâs the gist of it. You are still trying to fight Hawk Moth using an old set of rules. But the Guardian has a great deal of power to change the rules, including how holders interact with their Miraculous, their kwamis, and one another.â
Marinette sat bolt upright in her bed, suddenly realizing something.
âWait a sec!â she exclaimed. âHold on! Youâre saying I can change how holders interact with each other?! I can change those rules?â
âYes, Marinette,â Tikki said. âThat is the prerogative of the Guardian. For example, at the temple everyone knows everyoneâs identities and which Miraculous they use. That is the will of the Temple Guardian. But he also uses a ritual to prevent anyone from compromising anyone elseâs identity. Itâs similar to how we kwamis canât say the names of our holders.â
âWhy didnât Master Fu do that?â Marinette asked. âIt would have saved so much time and headache.â
âMaster Fu never knew the ritual,â Tikki said. âHe was far too young and inexperienced to learn it before the disaster. As a result, he adopted the policy that holders could not reveal their identities.â
âWait a sec. Back up again,â Marinette said, another thought occurring to her. âIs Master Fu the reason that the whole horrible thing with Chat Blanc happened? Is it because we accidentally contravened his will and caused a magical problem?â
âSort of,â Tikki said. âChat Noir getting akumatized was certainly not Master Fuâs will at all. But yes, such a breach of his rules could conceivably contribute to triggering a disaster of that nature.â
âBut why didnât anything happen to Alya and Nino?â Marinette asked. âThey knew each otherâs identities for ages.â
âProbably because Master Fu cared a lot less about the wielders of the Fox and Turtle Miraculous,â Tikki hypothesized. âThe most dangerous Miraculous are yours and Chat Noirâs, so he was very strict in his views as to how those holders interacted. Especially since he made mistakes choosing the holders before. But if someone got both the Turtle and Fox Miraculous, they wouldnât be able to make a universe-ending wish like they could with yours and Chat Noirâs. But this is not something that kwamis are supposed to know much about. Itâs Guardian stuff.â
Marinette realized her heart was pounding and she was breathing hard. The implications of this revelation were a lot to process. SheâŚcouldâŚchange the rules? She could know who Chat Noir is? He could know who she is? Revealing their identities would make it so much easier, especially if there was no risk of compromising their identities. Could she learn the ritual? Would Chat Noir agree to it? He had been perfect at maintaining a professional distance ever since that disastrous day when Master Fu had made Ladybug the Guardian.
Marinette missed her kitty. Even when they fought side by side, she felt like he was a million miles away. At the very least, she wanted back the warmth and camaraderie that they used to have. If there was a way that she could get that back, she was suddenly determined to try. Tikki noticed Marinetteâs expression change and immediately knew what it meant.
âKaalki could get you there,â Tikki said.
âWhaâŚWhat?â Marinette started. âSorry, I was wrapped up inside my head. What did you say?â
âI said that Kaalki could get you there,â Tikki repeated.
âKaalkiâŚyesâŚthe templeâŚI could go thereâŚlearn the ritualâŚâ Marinette was deep into plan-making. âIt would have to be late at night, probably, so it would be daytime there. What time zone is Tibet in anyway?â
Marinette looked at her phone. âOk, Tibet is six hours ahead of me. So, I would have to go at something like 2 or 3 in the morning to avoid anyone noticing my absence. School starts next week, so I need to do it before that. Two days. Or a day and a half, rather. Iâll go to bed early tomorrow and then wake up really early to go to the temple. What do you think, Tikki?â
âI think the sooner, the better,â Tikki said. âIâve thought for a long time that it would be so much better if you and Chat Noir knew who each other were.â
âYou did?â Marinette asked. âThen why didnât you say anything?â
âBecause it wasnât my place,â Tikki said. âThat is completely up to the Guardian. I have no power to defy the will of the Guardian.â
âBut Iâve been the Guardian for a year now,â Marinette said. âKeeping our identities secret wasnât my will if there is a way we could know without risk.â
âBut it was your will, Marinette,â Tikki said. âEven though you sort of inherited that rule from Master Fu, it became part of you.â
âThen why did you bring it up now?â Marinette asked.
âBecause you were ready for it,â Tikki said.
âI was ready for it?â Marinette asked.
Tikki said, âYou must have already been considering revealing your identity to Chat Noir. Have you?â
âWell, yes,â Marinette admitted. âOur dynamic started changing a year ago and not for the better. I was considering many possible solutions. That was one.â
Tikki said, âBy deliberately considering it, your will changed the magical dynamic so I could speak about it. You donât have to explicitly state your will for it to change things.â
âWow,â Marinette breathed. âThis is heavy.â She lay back against her pillows again, trying to wrap her mind around this new revelation. The Guardian had a lot more power than she ever realized. She knew now that she needed more guidance. The Temple Guardian could possibly give that to her. She had to try. This discord between her and Chat Noir had to be fixed or they would never be able to defeat Hawk Moth.
âTomorrow night,â Marinette said to herself. âTomorrow night. I am going to learn more tomorrow night. And maybe it will fix things between us.â Marinette smiled to herself and with that happy thought, she fell quickly to sleep.
