He quickly smoothes over the wrinkles in his jacket, more to soothe his sudden childish nervousness. “I didn’t quite expect to see you here so soon... Nor so enthusiastic...”
“I guess you can say - how do you say it on the internet, Chrono?” Overhaul spares a glance over his shoulder as his older brother leans closer and whispers in his ear. The oyabun nods softly in comprehension, his ever impassive demeanor undisturbed even by the following words:
“Guess who’s back?”

What this means is that the funds for printing the zine itself, all of the merch, and all of the other projected zine expenses are fully accounted for.

"Pops!" Dashing down the hall after giving her big brother a kiss, Mori jumps onto Chisaki to give him one giant bird hug.
Chisaki has a few seconds to hold himself for impact, to take one last deep breath and move to support Mori as she jumps into his arms. It’s the sudden contact, more than his feather-weight daughter that he has to brace himself against, to hold back the will to shiver and shy away from another’s touch. It’s his daughter, and she misses him; she has the right to jump on him, though maybe not frequently.
“Good to see you again, sweetheart. How you’ve been, during this time?” Overhaul’s usual politeness is a touch warmer, his golden eyes kinder at the sight of her. “I’ve been busy with work, but surely I can make more time for you now.”

“I’m not adorable, Aiko.” His grumpy reply is almost instinctual at this point, with hardly real thought into it. After brief hesitation, Kai wraps his arms around her small frame awkwardly, not truly eased into the hug yet.
“It does feel like it has been a while…. I suppose I’ve been too focused on the research.”
Aiko leaned into the hug just a little, not wanting to invade his personal space too much. She’d long since learned the amount of contact he could tolerate and she knew not to press those boundaries.
“Then we’ll have to take some time for just us soon, won’t we?”
“We sure should...” Kai wonders what they could do, trying to keep the thoughts of his increased heartbeat and dry throat out of his mind. His first thought is more work, maybe with rare quirks, but the Capo can almost hear Hari’s disapproval of that proposition in his mind. Maybe something that does sound relaxing, instead...
“We could go to a cafe nearby. Some quiet place, maybe with books. It would be good to talk.”

She reached her arms out.
“Hug?”

Overhaul attempts bravely to keep his composure, despite the affectionate gesture taking him by surprise. He blinks slowly, very much the surprised bird he is associated with, before relaxing into a somewhat pleased smile beneath the mask.
“Any special reason for that? Have I done something?”

Kai’s desperate, forceful composure crumbles in seconds at Hari’s truthful words, as in a quick movement he has again turned and hid in the safety of his feathery jacket. His long fingers are buried deep into the precious fur, broad shoulders shaking lightly as the edge of the hood is pushed against his forehead. His face, hidden from Hari’s sigh as best as possible, is deeply flushed, from the high points of his chubby cheeks to the tip of his button nose. A low sound escapes his throat through this unprecedent crack of his dignity, a singular whine of displeasure and embarassement born of pure frustration.
“W-Why do you do this to me, Hari??” It takes Chisaki precious seconds to even regain the ability to speak, less to acuse his older brother of his own inability of dealing with his emotions. “I-I need to be impossing! I’m the family leader, I need to be serious and threatening, and yet you keep saying I’m cute and I can’t keep it together if you embarass me like this!!”
“Do you know how much of a faillure of a boss this makes me??”
It takes Hari a huge chunk of effort not to laugh at his boss - and brother - making a scene over such a simple remark. That was… Oddly adorable, at least in Hari’s eyes. To be completely honest, messing with Kai was one of his favorite pastimes, much to Kai’s horror and Hari’s own amusement.
Kai never killed him, though. That sure said something about their relationship.
“Come on, now, don’t be like that!” Hari muses, a hand gently coming to pet the other man on his shoulder in hopes he won’t recoil even harder at touch. “I respect you and think you’re cute! One thing doesn’t cancel the other!”
“Besides, it’s not like the entire yakuza knows about this side of yours… You’re doing completely okay, Kai-chan. You can take my word for that, can’t you?”
Far from bringing any sort of relief to the aggravated capo, Hari’s words and supporting touch only rustle his metaphorical feathers further, but he does not shriek away from them. Overhaul pushes the hood of his jacket further against his face, to a point only the reddish tip of his nose and his mouth, pressed into a fine line, could be seen. At the mere mention his other subordinates could seen him in this utterly pathetic state, the corners of his mouth twitch in mild despair.
“Of course not! Things like laughter and cuteness are the death of respect for most people, and respect and duty are the foundations of our family. You’re... Different, Hari. You’ve seen me at my worst.” The passionate defense of his position fades into somewhat embarassed mumbling, and Chisaki struggles to stay firm, to regain his proud, clinical composure - he does manage to sound harsher, the grip of his gloves hands on the fabric tightening painfully. “The others can’t ever see me like this, it would risk the whole plan. I’ll kill anyone who does.” Except you was left implied.

Overhaul blinks quietly at that offer, the brief shock soon giving way to a disapproving stare. He crosses his fingers elegantly, staring down at Aiko in a politely displeasured stance.
“Not at all. And I’d rather not know why you have those.”

today is this blog’s SEVEN YEAR ANNIVERSARY ( est. in 2012 ) and this is my first time making a follow forever ?! i truly appreciate all of you for sticking around while I grapple with a minor character in an old cartoon, more than i can possibly describe. to be honest, I almost gave up about a week into this blog, but it’s you guys that have helped me make so many new stories and connections. please see under the cut for my list ( in no particular order, and I may have missed some - it’s been a long time ) !! a special thank you to everyone who has drawn art for me over the years ( graphic above is a compilation of some of them [ credit here ] ).
