January 25th, 1938

Leiji Matsumoto was born. Matsumoto is one of the most important creative minds in 1970s anime. His breakthrough success was with directing Space Battleship Yamato, which he had heavy creative influence on. The series was not only successful, but highly influential. Its themes and concepts show in space opera anime that followed it, including Mobile Suit Gundam and SDF Macross. Matsumoto would go on to create other space opera manga and anime such as Captain Harlock, Galaxy Express 999, Queen Millennia, and many more. And so, he is arguably responsible for the “space craze” of anime and manga in the 70s. He is married to former manga artist Miyako Maki.

LaAndromeda Promethium is a perfect subject for Inktober! I always loved how simple her design was was, and she had an intimidating presence overall, being a giant, space-monster-queen, and a mechanical person.

Helmazaria is one of those characters who is just a little too cool portray correctly with ease. I didn’t quite do her justice. 

 She is a legendary space knight renowned for her valor and brutality easily outrunning Tetsuro on their first encounter, which is no small feat. She’s also a Metanoid, which are biological people whose skin, muscles, organs, and bones are all made of metal, making them one of the most resilient races in the universe, nearly unkillable. 

 I actually like how she was used in the film ‘Eternal Fantasy’ better than in the manga. She fills the same role, but she comes across as much more of a threat, and her and Tetsuro’s second showdown is far more climactic and hair easing!! 

She’s got rad armor to. The only thing I didn’t have time for was the hexagonal pattern on her arms and legs that is present in the manga. I stuck with her look from the film, mostly.

Of all of Leiji Matsumoto’s designs, Emeraldas is probably my favorite, although I’ve never drawn her in this getup.
