I just realized James Cameron’s Avatar is just a Remake of Frank Herbert’s Dune
Think about it
- A technologically advanced civilization invades a mono-environmental planet for a rare mineral exclusive to that planet
(Avatar has the RDA mining for Unobtanium on Pandora, an all jungle planet, and Dune has the Pahdisha Empire mining for Melange on Arrakis, an all desert planet)
-The locals of the planet are deemed savages, but are actually one with the planet and are able to use the wildlife to their advantage, in addition to knowing the therein better.
(The Na'vi use primarily use the Banshee and the Great Leonopterux, the Fremen use the Giant Sandworms of Arrakis)
-A traitor from the technologically advanced invaders joins the locals and they mutually learn from each other and eventually turn the tides of battle.
(Jake Sully joins the Na'vi and teaches them how to better combat the Earth invaders while also growing as a person through learning from the Na'vi, Paul Atreides joins the Fremen and teaches them how to better combat the Empire invaders while growing as a person through learning from the Fremen)
- The invader’s combat is based around an advancement in their technology
(The Marines use mechs to fight the Na'vi, the Empire uses personal shields to fight the Fremen)
- humans cannot survive on the planet’s surface without the help of certain technologies
(The humans in Avatar can’t breath Pandora’s air so they wear masks, the humans in Dune dehydrate really fast in Arrakis’ dry climate so they wear Stillsuits)
Food for thought.
