I don’t do very many reblogs on here, but this is very important—each inaccessible station reduces the number of possible trips on the network at factorial rates, and the earlier maps do a good job of illustrating that even if a decently large fraction of stations is accessible, the fraction of trips that can be made with full access is much smaller.

I live in the DC Metro area and was always like “Man, the elevators are often out of service in the metro. Not very accessible. Wack.” Then I briefly moved to London and I was like, WHAT??? Half the stations make you go up STAIRS, not even escalators? It was just… unheard of to me. A lot of places are really not accessible in London, maybe because so many attractions are so old– I was very scared seeing an elderly lady with two canes trying to ascend narrow, spirally stairs at the Tower of London on a rainy, slippery day. I guess there’s no way to make a 1,000 year old castle accessible, but it was still nervewracking.
