Actual Friendly Reminder
Twenty years ago, Maria Snyder wrote a fantasy series with a major (and majorly powerful) transgender character; a gay couple; and people of all skin colors and backgrounds. In this series, good and bad characters can be male or female; white or POC; gifted or ordinary. It also exposes the pros and cons of both a military socialist society and a republic, and the realities of how these two types of societies view each other. If you’re looking for a series that is diverse without artifice and that seems simple on the surface but is in fact deceptively complex, read The Study Series. (Poison Study, Magic Study, and Fire Study.) The writing might not be as lush as that of some current authors, and some of the tone is typical of 90s attitudes, but don’t be fooled, these books are brilliant.

Sound ON and get ready for the feels: we asked you for your favourite moments from the Throne of Glass series and HERE THEY ARE. Kingdom of Ash, the epic conclusion to the Throne of Glass series is out NOW. Share this video with your friends who feel the same about this series as you do!
Poison Study is one of the most under-acknowledged books I have read, EVERYONE MUST READ IT
Things I Love about Poison Study by Maria V Snyder so far:
hits that sweet spot of fantasy & dystopia which I personally love
has a complex regime that is neither “the good one” nor “the bad one”, both it and the one before have pros and cons highlighted
just generally a cool fantasy world with interesting rules
the main character is a woman of colour, survivor and bamf (in an increasing number of ways; her skills are learnt/justified)
the main character actually wants friends!
the main character experiences PTSD & panic attacks
the first transgender character I have read about in anything non-fanfic literally ever; and they’re super powerful too
great side characters & quippy one-liners
but also really gritty powerful stuff like: “I did it for them, but I should have done it for me.”

you’re welcome
