Eyes

I really, really love descriptions of the eyes when reading whump. They give me whumperflies every time.

Are they wild and terrified when the whumpee wakes up in a cold, dark cell, completely alone? Or when the caretaker rescues them after months of captivity and the whumpee starts panicking as soon as they hear footsteps because that just means they are going to be hurt again?

Are they meek, submissive and downcast after the whumper has finally broken the whumpee after months/years of torture? Never looking anyone in the eye because they were taught not to do so by the whumper?

Are they scrunched up tightly as the whumpee tries not to let out even a single whimper as the whumper tortures them, brands them using a red hot knife? Or are they scrunched up tightly as one of the team members makes a sudden movement while talking and the whumpee immediately flinches and closes their eyes tight, expecting to be hit? Then the team member realizes what just happened and they try to console the whumpee that it’s ok, you’re safe, nobody’s going to hurt you.

Are they swimming with unshed tears that finally spill out accompanied by a scream from the whumpee’s throat as the torture goes on for too long and they can’t hold it in any longer? Or during a nightmare when they are tossing and turning in the bed and tears are leaking out from their eyes?

Are they wide with shock and confusion as they look down to see that they were stabbed, which then changes to horror as they realize what happened?

Are they out of focus and dazed due to a concussion? Or when the torture finally stops and they are so, so tired? The whumper sends a photo of the whumpee to the team, telling them how easy it was for them to break the whumpee.

Are they shocked when the whumper puts a collar around the whumpee’s throat? Panicking when the collar is set far too tight so it always feels like they are being choked and their breath comes in wheezes? Or when they are muzzled and told that they deserve it, that they are no better than a dog?

Are they pleading when the collar around their neck is tightened further as punishment? Or when they are denied food and are hit with severe hunger pangs and double over?

Are they rolling back into their heads as they suddenly fall unconscious in front of the team? Turns out they had a very serious injury and were hiding it from the team.

Do they hold the look of surprise and betrayal as they realize that one of their team members is on the whumper’s side and had helped them in capturing the whumpee and were responsible for all the suffering they are going through?

Do they have a faraway look in them when the whumpee starts dissociating? They go to a safe place in their mind to protect themselves from all the torture being inflicted upon them or the memories that keep haunting them. Or is the faraway look due to the flashbacks which are happening more frequently and they just can’t move on? They see someone smoking and suddenly their mind is flooded with the memories of the whumper using them as an ashtray. They glance towards the burn marks all over their body, proof of the hell they went through. Or when they accidentally drop a glass and it shatters, and they can’t help but think about when the whumper made them sit on broken glass pieces. Painful was an understatement. (This particular idea has been taken from Kingdom Of Ash (Throne of Glass #7) by Sarah J. Maas.) 

Are they defiant in front of the whumper due to their steely determination? They will hold on. They will not let the whumper break them, they will survive.

Are they hopeful at first as the whumpee is sure that their team will come to rescue them? But then weeks pass, then months (years?) but no one has come yet…They start to lose hope and think that the team has abandoned them. The whumper makes the whumpee believe that they are a waste of space and are not worth anything, why would the team want them back? They don’t believe that the team is rescuing them when the team finally arrives. They refuse to accept it and think that they are hallucinating their rescue, muttering things like “This isn’t real,” “Why would you even come and get me? I’m just a piece of trash!” “I’m a waste of space,” and repeating “This isn’t real” over and over again.

Are their eyes delirious when they have a fever which is way too high? (Sorry, I’m not good with sickfics. They’re not really my thing.)

Are their eyes relieved when they see the rescuer’ face in front of them and hear the rattle as they are being freed from their chains? They can’t even support themselves and the rescuer just rushes forward and hugs them gently after being separated for so long, running their fingers through their hair. The whumpee is too relieved to say anything and can only cry as the caretaker gently cradles them because they haven’t been touched in such a gentle and loving way for so long. All touch directed towards them was to hurt, to inflict pain and injury, and to torture.

Do they slowly flutter open and try to locate where they are? They find a worried caretaker in front of them, cracking a smile. They smile back and let out a timid ‘hi’. Their voice is croaky because of not being used for a long time/screaming too much. The caretaker runs their fingers through their hair and the whumpee leans into their comforting touch. The whumpee closes their eyes and sighs in contentment, momentarily forgetting all of their problems. They feel safe. Something they haven’t felt in months.

Kingdom Of Ash is the seventh book in the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas. This series is amazing. Perfect plot, perfect characters, perfect villain, perfect plot-twists. Perfect whump, too. Go check it out! Try to stay away from spoilers, as the series has some mind-blowing plot twists.
