“ You shouldn’t feel like a loser. There’s nothing wrong with taking a stroll all by yourself. Other people can suck it.” Oscar chuckled.” Dude…You have a heated pool? That’s freaking awesome. I wish I had a heated pool… I do have a bath tub which is like a small pool with heated water.”

Oscar’s mocking comment coaxed a rich laugh out of Theo, “I like the way you think, man.” He welcomed himself to a seat just across and took in the quaint surroundings. Not often an early riser sort, Theo couldn’t deny this time of day was actually quite pleasant. Last night was a disaster. “‘course I do. Even so, bath tubs do work better through the winter time.” He grinned. “You’re all set for the snowy season.”

“Just like a toddler, but a lot more entitled,” Though that was probably his fault as the owner, Jay still committed to a woe-is-me face but it was full of humor. “Hm, maybe I’ll draw a portrait of you as a dragon, the scales would fit with your complexion.” He commented, laughing out loud at the prospect.

He had to laugh. That was a rather typical description for a cat yet Theo had been given a similar label in the past. “Is that why your out here? Taking a break and getting lost in your imagination a bit?” Theo was still in denial of his own daughter and wouldn’t be able to stand the sound of her day-by-day. “I would love to see that.” Whether it be an enhancement or a joke, Theo still felt comfortable with Jay teasing him.

“ Now why shouldn’t you? I think early walks on the beach are pretty nice. There’s rarely anyone here and you can be at peace and get your feet wet, I wouldn’t swim since it’s freezing for that.”

“Early mornings, yeah. I feel like a bit of a loser taking those walks alone when crowds are out. Ya know? Oh, I’ll keep any swimming activity to my own pool for sure. Got a heated option there. No chaffing sand. No sharks either.”

“Lost?” He let out a laugh and looked down at the blank page in front of him. “I’d say that. I’m supposed to have this article written by next week and my brain isn’t working with me on this.” Too many things in his mind right now. “It is, makes people weak in the knees but they treat it like… I dunno a toy.” Rising an eyebrow he shrugged, “If you really want I can hit you.”

“Next week. That’s a whole lot of time. What’s it about--if I may ask?” Theo doubted he could be of any help, but was curious nosy enough to investigate. “Well fuck those people. It is cool to stand out of a crowd, but you should be respected.” He let out a short laugh toward the final offer, “Nah, like I said; had my fill of all that. Quite a dependable friend you’d be. Tried-and-true.”

Jay couldn’t help but laugh. “Sorry, but I already play servant to my son and cat. You’ll have to do your own laundry. Who calls you king, anyhow?”

“Kid’s do eat up a lot of time and attention. What’s this cat like?” He pondered aloud before letting out a disappointed ‘tsk’. “Damn. I hate folding. Hm, no one of consequence.” Theo teased, his dark eyes wild as ever.

Jay sat on a bench in the park, frowning at his novel. “Should I go into the forest to find the dragon or try and masquerade as one of the King’s servants?” He asked the man sitting next to him, with no explanation.

It was almost useless to try to work when Theo was in one of his ‘little moods’ as Declan called them. Theo wanted attention and to play and when he was like this very little if any work gets done. No wonder he had a constant headache all the time. In fact he reached up and pinched the bridge of his nose trying to keep the headache from turning into a full blown margarine as he asked, “What exactly do you want, Theo?”

“A lot of things.” He declared, crossing his right leg over the other and casting a glance over the city street. “Mostly I want a fucking espresso. Care for anything? Some sweets for my sweetie?

“Let’s discuss numbers. Did we sell out for this weekend? As expected?” The venue was humble and names plenty, popular more as the youth abandoned top ten charts for titles found on the internet. Tasteful and daring. Theo enjoyed catering to his demographic rather than pandering to plastics of his past who demanded Maroon V’s and Coldplay’s.

Sheridan snickered. “I’ll try to control myself.” He knew a player when he saw one – it took one to know one – and this guy certainly knew how to play the game. “It is the best way to do it, innit? A strong wardrobe is second only to a strong man when it comes to winter.” Not that he really wanted to think about cuddling with strong men right now all things considered. “Name’s Sheridan, by the way.”

“See you do.” Theo replied through a lopsided grin, dark eyes gleaming in a distant untamed fashion. “So long as I sleep in my bed sheets." Most strangers bedding, rough and squeaky consumer grade, was better off burned. “You find that type common ‘round here? Strength seems to fade by morning.” Threads wrinkled. Illusion broken. Theo preferred living outside of it anyway. “Theo.”

“Nah, I might be the weirdo in this scenario.” Theo confessed as it wouldn’t be too surprising. “Maybe I shouldn’t be taking walks on the beach this early. ‘hopefully you’re not running a fever.”

“From what I’ve been told I’ve got the mysterious look, can’t let that fade it’s almost all I have. Other than the accent that makes people just ask me to say words over and over.” Annoying things really. “Maybe if you get hit harder you’ll pull off rugged.”

“Yeah we’re best friends now for sure.” He nodded raising his glass towards Theo.

Theo had to laugh. “Mysterious, yeah, and a bit lost. You doing alright today, Beau?” Perhaps the question was forward between strangers, but Theo somehow felt comfortable around the other man. Sarcasm was a great quality to share. “The accent has to be a gift and a curse.” He agreed, showing a smirk. “See? Had you picked a fight with me it would have been a favor.”

Mathis snorted, “Germ monsters.” Whether the man was talking about germs in general or children he wasn’t entirely sure but it was funny all the same. “Yeah, I’ve been taking vitamins religiously. Nothing like a cold kicking your ass to get you to do something healthy.” 

“It’s just a few warm ups. Gotta keep the tools sharp or however the saying goes.” He tapped his pen against the table and glanced up from the sketchbook to give the other a small smile. “Thank you though. I might do some actual work but it’s kind of nice to just doodle and enjoy the weather.” Even if it was a bit chilly the sun was steady and warm against his back. “I’m Mathis by the way. Mathis Murdock.” He reached out to offer the other his hand. 

The direct talk coaxed a genuine laugh out of Theo, “Vitamins. Fair start. I’m near constantly around other people, antioxidants are a must if I plan to keep up.” Like illness it stood as a constant reminder to be at his best always. Some nights after partying that was a more difficult task to manage.

“Of course.” Theo hummed, admiring the drawings once more with a lopsided grin. His set of tools differed but the saying wasn’t lost on him at all. More than true. “Would be better with a cup of tea or coffee. Want me to grab you one? Coffee Spoon’s not far.” It was only polite to offer and the cafe was his initial draw to town for the afternoon anyway. “Theo Jin. I own the club venue in town. Sound Garden?” He offered in return, grasping the light hand for the usual formality.

Sheridan stared at the jacket on his shoulders, looked back at the person who’d bestowed it upon him, and then began to laugh light-heartedly. “Oh man, smooth. I bet you get all the boys like that, don’t ya’? I’m not cold though, thanks anyway. And I’m too short to wear bulky jackets.”

“C’mon. Tis the season.” He couldn’t help but offer a small chuckle following the counter, turned on his heel enough to mostly face Sheridan. “We’re not breaking any new ground here, so don’t phone the presses.” Such a voice, it could probably reach two blocks down. Not so favorable. Alright, Theo knew when he was beat so instead of making up excuses to keep the token on this man’s shoulders he took it back to drape neat over his forearm. “That is a shame. We all could find a way to stay warm in far less. Is that how you get through winter?”

“Well I suppose it had been my own fault since I got caught out in the rain and then didn’t really try to look after myself when my son caught a cold.” He shrugged and heaved a big sigh. “I hope you’re right though, I could do without catching another bug this season.” He knocked on the wood table before crossing his fingers. 

“If you say so but if you start getting cold feel free to take your jacket back.” He insisted, twirling his pen between his fingers with an expertise that spoke of years of practice. “Mn?” He glanced down at his sketchbook before turning it so the other could look at it freely. The page held a variety of figure drawings, some more detailed than others, and a few little scribbles of abstract dress designs. “I’m not drawing anything in particular really. Just some doodling.” 

Kids. There were so many in this town. Single dad’s too. He should consider the latter a blessing. Lord knew Theo needed the help, it was just too bad he didn’t acknowledge the problem let alone own it. “Brace yourself. We all could use some help. Especially when germ monsters are involved.”

Theo smirked and agreed to Mathis’ wish with a firm nod, “Thanks.” Both hands in his pockets, he felt quite comfortable in this spot. So long as the rain didn’t revisit them. The artist took him by surprise with the show and tell. So many he’d known through the years would clam up, rightfully so, but before he knew it the full work was right before him. Figure drawings. Theo could understand and appreciate those, easy, and the obscure shapes... they were similar to many paintings hanging in his old family home. Comforting yet a struggle to understand. It made him frustrated. “Is this what you like to draw most or just studies? It’s fantastic, by the way, for only sketches...”

“Actually didn’t think about hitting you.” Beau didn’t like fighting, he wasn’t sure that was true for the other man or not. Based on the look of him he really didn’t know. “You look like shit.” He agreed, “Beau.”

“That’s good to know.” He replied, honest for a change. The man didn’t run from fights, but some warning was always appreciated. “Aw, not rugged and mysterious? Damn. Guess there really is no bright side.”

“First name basis. Gotta be cool now, right?” It was enough to see the man smile, like a lost puppy dog. Reassurance must be a necessity.

“I bet! That sounds awesome. I like plane rides, but hate the tedium of going through TSA. Fuck that,” he quipped. “Celebrity? Nah… Not even close–although I did meet Bam Margera once. The articles were mostly just expositions on skating styles and one was about my small company, but thanks,” he said with a chuckle.

“Hah! Wouldn’t that be nice?” he said with a grin. He didn’t believe Theo one bit, but rolled his shoulders in a shrug. “So, have you lived in Maple Bay for a while, or are you relatively new, too?” he asked, perking a brow as he took another bite. It was damn good pizza.

“Have to agree with you there.” He replied, briskly, before hearing further details of Gentry’s accomplishments. “Really? How did you end up meeting? Press does help a great deal, no company can have enough of the stuff--but you seem comfortable with where you’re at.”

“Nice and disastrous all at once. Moving to this town with an alias and no ties would be a good first choice. Before family and friends turn into complete leeches.” Theo never had to struggle when it came to finance, but lottery winners tended to meet unfortunate ends. “It’s been awhile. Probably half a year. I usually spend holiday elsewhere, but I’d like to see how Maple Bay parties.”
