No ill-intent toward anyone or their specific fitness goals, but it absolutely warms my heart to see girls wanting to “grow” and “gain” and become strong in their physicality. This movement, in my opinion, is so powerful. We’ve been taught for so long to be less, eat less, speak less. This encouragement of strength and growth and power simultaneously eradicates the notion that women have to shrink themselves to be valued or important or accepted. To all of my strong ladies regardless of fitness level or goals, I salute you.

My boss called me “Tyrone” on accident (My name is Tyrand). She apologized and bought me lunch to make up for it. I didn’t think twice about it, since I’m used to getting called every variant of “Ty-(fill in blank here)”. Then later on I read a quote she keeps in her work area that made me feel kinda special.

“During my second month of nursing school, our professor gave us a pop quiz. I was a conscientious student and had breezed through the questions, until I read the last one: "What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?” Surely this was some kind of joke. I had seen the cleaning woman several times. She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50s, but how would I know her name? I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank. Before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our quiz grade. “Absolutely,” said the professor. “In your careers you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say ‘Hello’.”

I’ve never forgotten that lesson. I also learned her name was Dorothy.“

(3/3) “This time of year always makes me sad because we met at Christmastime and fell in love that winter. He drove a yellow cab during the day, and if I ever called, he’d drop everything and drive to Westchester to see me. I have so many memories of his cab pulling up in a snowstorm. I haven’t changed anything in the apartment since he died. For the longest time I couldn’t even sleep in our bed. I laid a mat on the floor. I don’t cook the foods that he liked anymore. I try to avoid the streets that we walked down together. I used to write letters to him, but that made me too sad. So now I just light an incense on the piano every morning.”

Jag hamnar i en lägenhet bland människor med gråa historier. Till höger om mig sitter en osäker grabb med för mycket makt för sitt eget bästa. På andra sidan finns ett stort hjärta som gömmer sig bakom en kall fasad. De är fler och ingen av dom visar varandra det jag ser rakt igenom. En lever i minnesbilder och en annan krigar för att klara sig tills morgondagen. Jag skulle vilja ställa frågan om hur dom ser på sig själva, men sen tänder dom en varsin holk och jag vet mycket väl att livet för dom inte längre spelar någon roll.
