This is just an excuse to draw Satou as a cat. Ayahh, He'd be the cutest cat in the world. Maybe I'll doodle cat Satou with a gun next.

They'd be a bickering couple. Izumi's more calm and collected, but with Tanaka's jokes and stubbornness, I'm sure her snappy attitude would come out. Maybe they'd like it at the end of the day, lol.

Ah, also, I like the little trope where the guy gives a woman a jacket cause it's cold out, and he already warned her about the weather and all. Except, when I apply this to Izutana --- I think Tanaka would be the one who denies needing one, just for Izumi to give him her jacket(and she's pissed), haha.

I don’t have much to say about it tbh. I forgot that it had set up the potential rest of the story. Tanaka is mentioned for the first time here by Tozaki. Izumi too - actually this is just before he meets her.

What tf did Shinya mean when he said he wouldn’t mind getting sold by his friend? Like huh? Also I really like the old IBM designs because they look more spooky but i think it’s probably easier to draw them more human-like

Also I love the idea of seeing IBMs in your peripheral visions like a haunting specter.

I still haven’t watched the OAD version of this

So I decided to watch the OAD because I have nevverrr watched it before.

It’s interesting that they decided to add some ‘moral lessons’ here that are brand new to this short story for some reason:

Don’t ditch your homies (Shinya ditched his meetup with Yusuke to get his notes to pursue a cute girl at a party he didn’t want to go to at first)

Dont drive the backroads in the rain (Traffic too heavy and I can’t be late to the party)

Turn off distractions while driving (Phone call was a major factor in his accident)

In the story, Yusuke hands Shinya a small package of tissues when he sees him crying. In the manga, on the tissues is an ad for an adult massaging place and in the anime it’s related to grant pharmaceuticals. I was so fixated on the adult massage ad that I didn’t realize that probably wasn’t the point of the tissues - the point is that the tissues were a sign that Yusuke saw Shinya’s pain and holding it in his hand at the end is a reminder of that. I got this impression from the OAD but the manga made me think okay he’s going to the adult massage place after all that I guess.

Also Yusukes model kind of looks like Kai

Imagine Tanaka just leans on and hugs Izumi whenever he wants when they get together ouu. When he's sad, he doesn't say anything, just holds her! Izumi just seems to understand him, so she wouldn't mind.

But besides that, I'd like to think that when he feels affectionate, he pisses her off before anything lol. Maybe he'd like her most when she's grumpy.

ch 9 time - Satou and Tanaka break into the facility

Ogura was actually referenced in-text for the first time last chapter and the chapter starts with him being referred to by a reporter. Also I just realized that the rain at the end of last chapter was a teaser for what’s to come because I forget that IBMs connection suck a lot more in the rain so I guess it gives them incentive to use it a lot less since it would be pretty easy mode. Also an explosion made the sprinklers go off - genius!! 😫

I forget that Satou planned to kidnap Ogura. But for what reason? I did draw a little 2-3 page AU where Tanaka did succeed in getting Ogura (A bit Tanagura) because I feel like he’d annoy tf out of Tanaka which I would’ve love to have seen…

How did Satou know calling him Tozaki would extra piss him off or maybe it’s an honest mistake lol

Man Satou is great in this chapter- is this the one that made fans back in the day? He is quite lovely in the ‘Tonight demi-human affairs in Japan are in for a sea change’ one-page panel; he looks so cool.

Also I love how, at this point, the fear of floods and IBMs which Tosaki and co refer to as the ‘Shinya Nakamura incident’ and ‘variant power’ makes them make baffling decisions like not killing Ajin out of fear. As a result, they totally nerf their own efforts at fighting back so Satou and Tanaka easily do what they need to do. Love this sm

They didn’t know floods are triggered by emotions and that Satou is the idgaf king, they would’ve been fine. They also don’t know variant powers which to them probably seem like psychic powers are just invisible guys that pop out of ajin doing stuff.

Omg this is the chapter with the hallway scene. Yeah you know this had to be it. When I saw this scene in the anime - which I saw before the manga - it made me a Satou fan instantly. Ugh it’s so sick that he got the tranq in his arm and immediately chopped it off - terrifying security - and immediately used it as a stabilizer and then more tranqs were shot in his chest and he shoots himself with no fanfare and security is again like wtf. So great. He’s like that figure skater, Alysa Liu, getting lost in the flow. Kinda jealous. I get flow state sometimes when drawing but it must be amazing to do it with your whole body.

Love how Tanaka laments that guns do tire you out. I know Sakurai was delighted to include this detail.

Also utterly creepy to see Tanaka’s sliding cabinet (002) placed above Kei’s. Actually I was looking this up to see what this cabinet was called - a cadaver/mortuary cabinet - and it’s refrigerated to 1°C to 5°C or ~34 to 42°F…. It’s probably modified but I had never considered this.

Satou goes to stab Kei to wake him up and yet he unwraps Tanaka and places him on a chair and waits for him to come to. He’s like so gentle with Tanaka in comparison lmao. In parental terms he’s like holding Tanaka up in the pool with floaties going there… that’s it, you got it! Good job! And he shoves Kei into the pool instead. His patience is gone lol

No wonder Tanaka likes him so much.

Also first thing Kei does when he pops out is say sorry for causing you’re trouble :(

Haa this one's pretty old, during the time I barely had any fanart. I was just getting out my art break so it's not the best. I got used to drawing Tanaka and Izumi now, though. Hmm...

ch 8 - chapter about keis friend

Whenever i do a reread I get stuck at this chapter and the pilot chapter which i think is also in vol 2 cause i have to get through them to get back to the story.

Kei was caught in Yamanashi prefecture. Trying to find a place that Tanaka could be from for my comic, I figured Yamanashi would be nice because it’s so pretty and green and Mt. Fuji is in it. So I was like 8D when I read this.

This chapter goes more in-depth about the world of Ajin - it’s also devastating to see this character, Nakajima, ask some real questions about how Ajin are treated but get shot down over and over until he gives up and essentially moves on. Like this guy could’ve been a real shooter for Ajin rights but his flame was smothered out. Kei will never know the kind of impression he made on someone.

Also this chapter is creepily prescient - there’s a wall of people who are suspected to have demi-human sympathies. I get the feeling that ajin rights webpage Nakajima sent his info to was like a honeypot for ajin sympathizers. At the top of this wall is a percentage of the population which may ‘pose an obstacle’. It’s crazy… Like why go so far for this? Because, like Tosaki says - Ajin are economic animals. They never did use this big wall though.

In the end is a little bit of Satou and Tanaka yay. They delivered 10 hearts, 10 livers and 10 kidneys. I guess half of those kidneys were practice kidneys huh. Do you think Satou taught Tanaka how to do this? Nekozawa (the yakuza) says that Satou always delivers so he’s been doing this for some time - meaning is he doing this to himself somehow? Or maybe he has a guy. It can’t be his IBM by itself because in the manga is where he learns that IBMs can have some kind of autonomy. Actually maybe he pilots his IBM or something.

I like how the anime has a cute (lol…) little episode about how Satou uses his organ money for video games and then like begs Tanaka to help give organs for games and he essentially gets guilted into doing it…

Also they look so cute in the rain. 🥺 Satou is like I got a big haul 8D! And Tanaka is standing all tough-guy in the rain

Uah Ajin fans, does anyone know how old Tanaka is? I don't even know Izumi's age. Online, it states she's 21, but I have my doubts. The manga stated she was 3 years younger than Tanaka, right? Unless it was a mistranslation, I was confused on why he stated she was a little older than expected, 21 seems very young, lol.

Ch 7 - This is the one is which Kei gets tortured

I wonder if Tsuina Miura intended for Kei to ever get captured. It’s a very lonely chapter if you think about it - it kinda also shows fundamentally what kind of person Kei is.

He talks a lot and does play it cool but it’s like a protective layer i think. In this chapter those walls come down because he’s in a lot of pain and alone in his mind. He argues with himself - the darker side of himself presenting as a half-naked Tanaka with abs. He could kill the guy torturing him but he can’t because it’s something Kai would not do - he actually really respects Kai and is grateful towards him and I think he genuinely admires him and might wish he could be more like him - and he wants to live up to that and not do something like kill that guy to stop his pain.

Dream Tanaka (Dreamnaka) I don’t think is too far off from Keis vision - I think he’d, at this point in the story anyway, be like yeah fuck that guy you should kill him to stop him from hurting you. However Dreamnaka is probably rougher around the edges too? In the Japanese version when Kei is like I can’t kill because Kai wouldn’t like that, Dreamnaka is like ‘What are you? A woman?’

Also it’s creepy how they just do stuff to Kei with no aim and one of the guys remarks that you can tell how much an Ajin has died by their reaction to pain meaning that this is likely what happened with Tanaka :( And maybe it tracks on some level - because much later when Izumi saves him, he gets shot in the shoulder and just stares over his shoulder like he got bit by a mosquito. TBH though I think he feels the pain but he probably just dissociates.

Also like for a sec I forgot if Izumi being an ajin was a secret or not bc wtf Tosaki asks her questions about Keis IBM/ghost next to the scientists. It is a secret. Why’d he got to throw that threat at her like that though.
