How I would have done it:

I would have had Alison find out about the NAT club and then set up a video recorder in her room looking into Spencer’s room. Then she would use that against Ian. And instead of Ian trying to kill Spencer in the church it would be him trying to explain to her but Spencer still thinks Ian killed Alison and right as Ian is trying to tell Spencer how Alison set him up, Alison pushes him to shut him up to save her own ass.
