Arabic and Chinese languages are spoken by approximately 1.5 billion people in all. To most people from Western countries they are completely incomprehensible which strenghtens the stereotypical division between „we” and „them”. There were only three videos in the database of Haskins Laboratories exploring the linguistics through X-Ray: Damascan Arabic, Mandarin Chinese and English. Creating a talk between people of those three languages and three cultures poses a question of our understanding of eachother. Expressing meaningless sounds emphasises the similarieties in linguistic expression and makes it equaly intellegible / unintelligible for each viewer.
