The thing that makes Dream SMP so horrific isn't the sheer scale of it's angst. There have been children's shows with a bigger death toll by thousands and even millions, like Steven Universe with it's themes of breaking free from an exploitative system through war that showcased suffering spanning galaxies wide, or Adventure time where it's entire basis of history is that their world is the remnants of an apocalypse, or as with Gravity Falls, where the whole fabric of reality would have been transformed to a nightmare if it hadn't been for the bonds between one rag tag family, etc. No, the pain in Dream SMP isn't grand, and that makes it all the more difficult to stomach.
Because instead of the main villain being some chaos entity from space that slaughtered numerous lives, it's that friend that acted like an older brother and laughed over the most stupid of jokes and fought with you over the most useless, mundane of things, before he turned around and started slipping further and further into his god complex until the only thing he lived for anymore was the enjoyment and fascination he took in your suffering.
And that authority figure you need to take down for their unethical management of the system is not some lackey or world leader who you only know by their title and evil deeds, no, it's that man that gave everyone pumpkin pie and promised you he could give you a home when everyone else had left you in the dirt and who told you how sad he was to see you frown and giggled over your valentines confession and created a whole sentient machine to help you combat your mental health struggles and build you a place where you could actually feel safe, only for him to fall to repeating the same torturous abuse on others that he swore he would protect them from.
Oh, and that otherworldly entity, beyond the veil of your mortal world, that wishes you to join them in their eternal game outside your reality, that knows the secrets of the universe, including it's end? What if that was once just your brother that played guitar, and your father that smothered you in affection, and your leader that tried to lead your close knit group to freedom and prosperity with diplomatic words, and stood as bait in the range of fire, unprotected, when it came to battle, and cried under closed doors when the speeches were done and all that was left was to lie face first into a pillow. Slowly, painfully, drifting away from his goal, from hope, as he let go of that vision and self destructed in his paranoia and pain, taking you all down with him. Dying with the conviction that the only thing he ever brought, and could bring, was suffering.
So it doesn't matter that the wars that they went through only featured a dozen people at most, because while there was no big, inconceivable number of the lives lost, the despair and utter loss of hope, and anger, grief, that the few people we follow displayed at the end of it, was enough to tell the story. And it doesn't matter that the exile arc only lasted about a week in our time, because while it didn't last years for the character like it could have in any other story, the plain and so unapologetically explicit depiction of abuse we sat through watching all 11 of those days was enough to leave us shaken to our core. And it doesn't matter that the possession esque plot in Ranboo's story is never actually fully displayed, never actually results in anything too grotesque or alien, just some property damage, because the horror in Ranboo's voice and his detailed monologues as realizations keep piling up about the following pain that has resulted from it, the fear and uncertainty of himself, his own mind, and all the implications, are enough to make us cry.
Because, in the end, there doesn't need to be some big, cinematic, world wide tragedy to make us believe this is serious, to make us scream at the unfairness of it all. There just needs to be the intimate, and horrifying realization, that in this story, the ones closest to us are the ones who can actually hurt us the most.

I’ve said it before, but it’s always been weird to me the way that people have tried to de-emphasize dream’s intentions with tommy and the prison. up to This Week I’ve seen people arguing that the idea that dream designed the prison for tommy is Just As ridiculous as the idea that dream got himself imprisoned on purpose, and it’s just like, Why?
from a narrative perspective, the prison was intended for tommy, point blank. dream made his move to frame tommy Immediately after the 16th, specifically going for as many people as possible to try to get them angry with him and rally them all into confronting him [Link]. when that didn’t quite pan out he manipulated the situation with tommy griefing george (something that was fixed in minutes and that george griefed him back for, as nature intended) to get tommy exiled.
which, as has been pointed out before, tommy’s “exile” was kidnapping. tommy had been banished from l’manberg in court, meaning by tubbo’s word he should’ve been allowed to go literally anywhere else if he wanted. dream told him he wasn’t allowed to go where anyone else had touched (which he did not have the authority to do) and brought him to a specific location and told him that he had to stay there or he’d be killed. he trapped him, Imprisoned him you could say. and he expressed Multiple Times that he wanted tommy to stay there forever. he full on hunted tommy down when he took refuge with technoblade (someone completely unaffiliated with any governments, entirely out of dream’s jurisdiction).
exile was premeditated, dream kidnapping tommy was premeditated, dream’s abuse of tommy started On The Way Out of l’manberg meaning It was premeditated. dream commissioned the prison the First Day of tommy’s exile.
The First Day.
canonically dream designed the prison, meaning he was drawing up prison designs At The Same Time he was planning out how to get tommy ejected from l’manberg and under his power.
and then? the pause between doomsday and the disk war finale was timed Specifically so the prison would be finished by the time he confronted tommy. he destroyed l’manberg, he took the discs, he told tommy to his face that their story would never be over because it was Fun, and then he waited for his prison to be built. he built his attachments museum, he vandalized tommy’s house with a compass and a message to bring specifically him and tubbo to a specific location at a specific time. he brought the two down to his collection, explained Exactly what he was doing and why, and nearly killed tubbo and dragged tommy down to the prison.
narratively speaking, the prison is inherently tied to tommy’s exile, it’s tied to dream’s Stated Intentions to imprison tommy there forever, it’s tied to the disc war finale. the catharsis of him being thrown in the prison was then tied to that being flipped. it mattered that it was Tommy that imprisoned him because it was Tommy that’d been intended to be hurt through it. to be displayed liked a prized possession.
and yet people argue that it Couldn’t be because Dream said that wasn’t his intention, as if dream has never lied about his intentions with tommy before. as if tommy hasn’t Continued to be tied into the narrative of dream and the prison throughout season three.
there’s no reason to deny it, it’s obviously the narrative intent
i find it funny whenever cdream apologists say that ppl that dont rlly like cdream apologists never have been in a fandom before bc we dont "like others liking villains" as if i didnt see people while i was in the fnaf fandom putting "william afton defenders" in their dni 😭 this is not new. sometimes people are just uncomfortable when people defend characters that are abusers, or hurt kids, or both
Hi, hi, hello, that time again bc apparently with cc!Boomer's latest stream and saying that "c!Dream was just a bad guy making some bad decisions," I thought it a good idea to remind you of just some of the evil shit that c!Dream did! This list is quite long so strap in! All names mentioned from here on out will be the characters, not the CCs unless denoted otherwise!
I'm gonna go off pure memory, let's see how many boxes we can tick of evil/creepy shit Dream has done! If I miss any good ones, or if anything is incorrect, please feel free to add them/correct me!
- Supported the burning of Ponk's lemon tree!
- Unfairly went after Tommy after he and Sapnap killed Dream, punishing Tommy without even attempting to punish Sapnap bc they were friends.
- Stole Tommy's prized discs to force Tommy into apologizing for killing him (when Sapnap was actually the one who killed him!)
- Pretended to burn Tommy's discs just to taunt Tommy (not really a nice thing to do, y'know?)
- Intentionally prevented Tommy from getting new discs by destroying the machine he was using to get them
- Blew up Tommy's house for funzies countless times (remember post November 16th? Literally there was no reason to blow up his house then). Also took out the entire floor obsessively looking for Tommy's discs. Dug tunnels to Tommy's house and his jukebox to try and steal his discs even after they were fairly traded.
- Oh yeah, tried to kill Tommy to get the discs again after they were fairly traded back to Tommy.
- Killed Tubbo's bees for no reason except that Tubbo loved them.
- Killed Tubbo over and over again at his jungle base.
- Tried to bribe Jack into joining the Greater Dream SMP instead of letting him decide for himself
- Engineered the slaughter of the L'Manburgians, traumatizing all of them.
- Endorsed Schlatt (not exactly evil, but it's interesting how he endorsed Schlatt, then flipped around & called him a tyrant & supported Pogtopia, then sided with Schlatt for the revive book, then turned on him again when he realized he could get rid of Schlatt, isn't it?)
- Helped Tommy destroy the Eiffel Tower and then tried to pass the blame off onto ONLY Tommy.
- Goaded Tommy into killing Sapnap's pets after Sapnap killed Henry.
- Lied to Tommy about being his friend in Pogtopia
- Gave a mentally ill/depressed/suicidal man TNT with which to rig his nation up to be destroyed
- Aided in the destruction of Manburg (and cheered when it blew up)
- Unfairly dethroned Eret because Eret wanted to help her friends (and literally admitted to Eret's face that she was only a puppet)
- Went around burning and griefing buildings with Puffy and blamed it all on Tommy
- Didn't include George at all in the negotiations over what would happen to Tommy post-house-burning despite George being the king and it being his house that got pranked
- Intentionally exaggerated/ignored George's feelings about the griefing so that he could better manipulate the situation
- Pressured Tubbo into exiling Tommy and literally backed him into a corner
- Taunted Tommy privately with ":)" and "have fun on probation" to intentionally rile Tommy up into lashing out so that Dream could use that against him
- Literally threatened an entire nation by putting their fate on the shoulder of one citizen, demanding that Tubbo either exile Tommy or all of L'Manburg would be blocked in and the people controlled/slaughtered like sheep
- Unfairly dethroned George and actively ignored/disregarded George and Sapnap's feelings on it, basically treating his best friends like pawns to be used and thrown out
- Exclaimed he didn't care about anything other than Tommy's discs and power
- Kidnapped Tommy by immediately exiling him from everywhere despite only having the authority to exile him from the Greater Dream SMP
- Deciding that he gets to be the ultimate authority over Tommy's exile despite it being Tubbo's rule
- Isolating Tommy thousands of blocks away and confining him to one area (basically like imprisonment, but outside)
- Mentally, emotionally, and physically abused Tommy to the point that Tommy was completely dependent on Dream for everything, had an intense fear of him, would obey him without hesitation, suffered from major Stockholm Syndrome, and had a massive depressive spiral that Dream fueled that almost led Tommy to killing himself
- Sabotaged the invitations to Tommy's beach party so that Tommy would think everyone hated him but Dream
- Tried to kill Ghostbur by sending him off into the snow
- Manipulated Tubbo by praising him for exiling Tommy and being a "good leader," making Tubbo trust Dream.
- Lied to everyone that Tommy didn't want to see them when he was exiled
- Literally killed Mexican Dream in cold blood just because MD was hanging out with Tommy and was a threat to his authority and to Tommy's vulnerability
- Punished Tommy for rules that he never told Tommy before he'd already broken them (aka ABUSE!)
- Blew up all of Logstedshire, Tommy's things, and his one food source.
- Tried to isolate Tommy even more by saying he couldn't go to the nether or see his friends UNLESS Dream allowed it
- Hunted Tommy down three times when he escaped Dream in Logstedshire
- Lied to Ghostbur's face about wanting to "help" Tommy with the party
- Rescued Techno from the Butcher Army to gain a favor from him
- Immediately upon seeing Tommy again, Dream attempted to manipulate Tommy into coming with him again, likely to keep abusing/conditioning him (and only stopped bc Techno was in the way)
- Blew up the Community House to frame on Tommy so that he could get Tommy's disc from Tubbo, turn the server against him, and further destroy his and Tubbo's friendship
- Literally admitted to lying to Tubbo's face about being his friend, humiliated him, and berated Tubbo for trusting him despite that being his goal the entire time
- Gleefully took Tommy's disc from Tubbo
- Watched passively as Tommy and Tubbo tried to kill each other
- Immediately sided with Techno in wanting to destroy L'Manburg, another case of Dream blatantly manipulating/lying to people about him being peaceful with L'Manburg
- Aided in the complete obliteration of L'Manburg for its final death
- Told Tommy to his face that he "finds him fun" and that their story will never be over because of it
- Got EW!Ranboo to destroy Tommy's house so that he could leave his "Your Discs" compass behind
- Have I mentioned commissioning a massive fuckoff prison yet?
- How about deliberately making the prison conditions completely inhumane, like telling Sam to feed the prisoners raw potatoes instead of steaks? Or telling Sam to block off the courtyard so that no one could use it? Or how Dream didn't want to have books in the main cell to make the prisoner as miserable as possible?
- Oh yeah! I forgot! How about telling Punz he wants a "happy family" while standing in front of that prison that has 20+ cells he said they could throw people into? And how about that he said this while actively abusing Tommy?
- Fought Tommy and Tubbo atop the mountain for full control over Tommy, reignited Tommy's trauma by repeating actions conditioned in exile
- Called Tubbo a useless pawn many, many times (dehumanization, much?)
- Claimed Tommy is the source of all attachment and said he'd lock him up so that he could control him
- Planned on killing Tubbo in cold blood just to hurt Tommy and give him a "hero's origin story"
- Tried to manipulate Tommy again when the server showed up to save them
- Tried to collect everyone's attachments to control them, he literally admits to this!!
- Attacked Tommy one final time after he was about to be escorted to the prison
- Tried to manipulate Tommy again and again during their first prison visit by pretending to apologize and acting all sad and shit
- "'Cause I lost all my friends, and my server, and my stuff... and you... and my lives."
- Told Tommy to "get in the hole" when he was leaving rather than telling him to stand in the water, intentionally dredging up his exile memories
- psychologically tormented Sam by telling Sam about what he did to Tommy in exile
- roped Sapnap into his scheme of activating EW!Ranboo (Sapnap was an unknowing and unwilling accomplice), using their past friendship as a tool to manipulate Sapnap into doing this
- During his second prison visit, he pressured and tried to manipulate Tommy into coming back to visit, claimed exile wasn't "too bad," dismissed Tommy's feelings, and THEN, when the TNT went off, Dream started acting all high and mighty and giddy, saying that they'd "have fun together," "just like in exile," effectively making fun of Tommy's trauma and downplaying it. Laughed at Tommy's panic and fear.
- Likely organized the TNT going off on top of the prison with EW!Ranboo so that Tommy would be trapped in there with him so that Dream could reignite his abuse and manipulation and Tommy's trauma
- While they were trapped together, tried to get Tommy to help break him out, manipulated him, withheld food from him just for being annoying.
- Beat Tommy to death because Tommy was calling him a liar about the revive book.
- He laughed after killing Tommy.
- Once again psychologically tormented Sam by telling him to come into the cell so that he could kill him too.
- when he revived Tommy, despite Tommy being in clear distress, Dream continued to pester Tommy about death and what it was like.
- Claimed he could kill Tommy over and over and just revive him to learn about death despite it clearly being traumatic
- Claimed Tommy's life is in his hands
- Called himself a god and everyone else his puppets
- Claimed he would get revenge on everyone who wronged him
- Said he would revive Wilbur and that Wilbur would owe him his life just for reviving him
- Killed Ghostbur and revived Wilbur
- Passively asked if people thought that Tommy being revived was "cool"
- Oh yeah, more things I forgot! Dream only ever talked about Tommy in the prison while he was alone, and Dream admitted to Sam that he needs Tommy!
- claimed many times that he thinks he's in the right/that he did "bad things for good reasons."
- had the audacity to ask Sam to restore the original prison conditions after realizing that living through the consequences of his actions isn't fun
- is likely lying to Techno about actually viewing him as a friend, since Dream has no friends nor wants any due to deeming relationships like that as a weakness
That's all my brain can think of right now. But sheesh, look at that list! And you know what's great? All of these things were Dream's own decisions! Meaning he wasn't a bad guy making mistakes/doing bad things, he was a bad guy making deliberate choices to hurt and manipulate and abuse people for more control over them because that's all he values!
Dream admits it himself: "I'm not a psycho! Everything I do is deliberate!"
You know what that means? To Dream, none of his decisions are bad decisions. None of his decisions are mistakes. Because everything he does is deliberate. He's a bad guy doing horribly awful things because he loves hurting people.
