About Beard Study

In October 2012 I was diagnosed with Testicular Cancer. I underwent chemotherapy as a form of treatment, and lost all the hair on my head and my face. I had four months of treatment and recover, and many times grew bored with the copious time on my hands. I started drawing beards to pass the time. 

This project began as something to pass the time while I was undergoing chemotherapy for Testicular Cancer. In October 2012, I was diagnosed with Testicular Cancer, and by late November, as a side effect of chemotherapy, I had lost my beard and all the hair on my head.   

I had a lot of time on my hands, as I stopped working for four months. I eventually grew bored with my copious free time, and started making drawings of beards to replace the one I had lost. I posted a few photos of the beard drawings on Instagram, and was surprised by the positive response. I don't remember what caused me to bring out my watercolors, but the next thing I knew, I was making lots of watercolors depicting beards. 

This exhibition is a project of healing and reclamation. This is also my first exhibition of paintings, as I have never taken a painting class and predominately work in photographs and video. While my hair slowly returned to my face and head, I continued to produce these watercolors of beards. This exhibition is the culmination of these last 16 months of healing and making.

RAINMAKER is an Oregon non-profit whose mission is to provide studio space and professional development support to recent graduates of visual arts MFA programs in Portland, Oregon.

Statement

Phrase is a quarterly reading series in Portland, Oregon. Its aim is to bring the embodiment of text into the context of the visual arts through the aural and physical manifestations of work from writers of disparate backgrounds. Beginning in the autumn of 2013, Phrase was manifested out of the desire of two visual artists and writers, Juleen Johnson and (maria)petra fortes-schramm, to involve two of their passions—visual art and writing--by hosting quarterly readings, and to observe the relationships that form from bring formal objects together with written and performed art.

  Bios

  Debra Busman is a fiction/creative non-fiction writer and co-director of the Creative Writing and Social Action Program at CSU Monterey Bay. Coeditor of Fire and Ink: An Anthology of Social Action Writing, her work has been published in Combined Destinies: Whites Share Grief About Racism; Street Lit: Representing the Urban Landscape; The LA Review; and many others. Lee Herrick is the author of Gardening Secrets of the Dead (WordTech Editions, 2012) and This Many Miles from Desire (WordTech Editions, 2007). His poems have been published widely in literary magazines and anthologies including The Bloomsbury Review, ZZYZYVA, Berkeley Poetry Review, From the Fishouse online, Highway 99: A Literary Journey Through California's Great Central Valley, 2nd edition and others - www.leeherrick.com.

  Juleen Johnson is an artist. She received her Master of Fine Arts in Visual Studies from Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon. During Johnson's undergraduate studies she received two Bachelors from CSU Monterey Bay, one degree in Visual and Public Art with concentrations in Museum Studies and Integrated Media and the other in Humanities and Communication with concentrations in Creative Writing and Social Justice & Film and Literature. She currently resides and practices in Portland, Oregon. www.juleenj.com
