Hello! This is a blog specifically designed for my Senior Action Project. It's goal is to show appreciate to minority characters of the media in order to show that characters will not be held by their stereotypes. Here, artists and writers can also showcase their characters are work that feature major characters of minority background and/or of the LGBT community.

Nickelodeon cartoon introduces channel's first gay married couple

'Time to make history!'

Nickelodeon has introduced its first ever gay married couple in popular animated series The Loud House.

In an attempt to show more LGBTI representation in its shows, this is the first male same-sex couple we’ve seen on the kids TV channel. 

RuPaul recently appeared in an episode of Bubble Guppies last year and it all started with Legend of Korra’s lesbian romance.

In the cartoon, 11-year-old Lincoln Loud is the only boy with 10 sisters trying to cope with the family chaos.

On the 20 July episode, Overnight Success, his best friend Clyde McBride comes over for a sleepover and it’s revealed to audiences he has two gay dads. 

Great to see this. Representation will always matter and make a difference for our community.

Characters from Taarradhin

Neqtia: (Pictured far left.) Person of colour. LGBT (depending on the ending, she can romance either a male or female character). Daughter of a wealthy noble, she is kind-hearted and sweet, but also naive about anything outside of her personal world. She can come across as self-centered due to her sheltered upbringing, but she is well-meaning.

Jyrik: Person of colour. One of the two slaves from Djedi, he was chosen from among the commoners because of his youth and handsome looks. Smooth, confident, and knowledgeable, Jyrik works in the garden of Neqtia’s estate, but as he and Araerda are meant to be trophies, he’s more like an exotic plant himself.

Araerda: (Pictured far right.) Person of colour. LGBT (depending on the ending, she shows romantic attraction to another female character).The other slave brought from Djedi, she is considered one of the most beautiful women of her country. Araerda works as one of Neqtia’s handmaids and is a kind, patient listener who takes to Neqtia instantly and showers her with compliments and attention.

Characters from Three Guys That Paint

Nigel - LGBT (depending on the ending, Nigel can show romantic attraction to both male and female characters). The player character. Nigel is a house painter who is trying to balance between his freelance jobs as a painter and taking care of Alicia. He wants to be a good father.

Dry and snarky, he’s the most down-to-Earth of the group. It was his idea to start the independent painting company, called Three Guys That Paint, with his two friends.

Nigel likes the simple life, has no real ambitions at moving on from his house painting job (he likes it just fine), and is perfectly content to hang out with Alicia, and his friends-slash-colleagues, Terri and Arthur.

Terri - Person of colour. Terri is one of Nigel’s co-workers. She is the most sensible of the group. Terri may be friendly, but at her core, she’s tough-as-nails. She is a rational, skeptical, and confident woman.

Arthur - LGBT (romantically-interested in a male character). Arthur is Nigel’s other co-worker. He is an energetic, enthusiastic and excitable person. He thinks, speaks, acts and reacts quickly. But because he’s wrapped just a little too tight, sometimes his excitement can overwhelm him–making him the character most likely to panic. He is more nervous and apprehensive than his co-workers. Arthur may not be the most easy-going of the friends, but he’s probably the most enthusiastic. (x)

Characters from Atlantis: The Lost Empire

Audrey Rocio Ramirez - A teenage Puerto Rican mechanic and the youngest member of the expedition in search of Atlantis. She’s portrayed as an aggressive, sarcastic, and proud, and is also shown to be the best mechanic in her crew.

Jacqueline Obradors (Audrey’s voice actress) said her character made her “feel like a little kid again” and she always hoped her sessions would last longer.

Doctor Joshua Strongbear Sweet - A medic of African American and Native American descent. He’s portrayed as an intelligent, boisterous, confident man, who cares about his patients.

Sweet’s supervising animator, Ron Husband, indicated that one of the challenges was animating Sweet in sync with Morris’ rapid line delivery while keeping him believable. Phil Morris (Sweet’s voice actor) stated that this character was extreme, with “no middle ground”; he mentioned, “When he was happy, he was really happy, and when he’s solemn, he’s real solemn.” (x)

Albino Pirate.

From The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists!/The Pirates! Band of Misfits.

Albino Pirate (every pirate in the film goes by a nickname) is portrayed as the nicest pirate in the Captain’s crew.

Albino Pirate’s also shown to have a very strong bond with Polly (the crew’s “parrot”), constantly holding and petting her. He gets so distraught at the news that Polly has been sold, that it leads to the Captain regretting his decision to sell Polly, driving him to go off to rescue her.

Characters from Annedroids.

Nick - Person of colour. After moving into a new neighbourhood, Nick became friends with Anne, a young scientist who secretly makes androids and other inventions in the local junkyard. Nick is portrayed as the “eyes” of the story, with the series being told mainly through his point of view.

Pal - Agender. Created as a personal assistant and crash dummy, Pal is Anne’s most human-like and most sophisticated of her androids. Pal is sentient enough to ask questions, show curiosity, feel emotions, and is very agile. Anne left Pal’s gender undetermined.

Helga.

Diagnosed with diabetes (not specified whether it’s type I or type II; most likely type II due to her age). From The Witches.

Helga is the grandmother of the nine-year-old protagonist, Luke. She shares a strong bond with her grandson, and ends up taking care of him after he becomes orphaned.

Helga and Luke move to a seaside hotel in Britain after she’s diagnosed with diabetes, under the advice of her doctor. However, it turns out that the hotel is overrun by witches disguised as women. Fortunately, Helga has past experience with dealing with witches as a child in Norway, so she’s able to give Luke valuable information on how to distinguish a witch from a real human.

Emile Petite.

Person with dwarfism. From A Monster in Paris.

Emile works as a projectionist at a local Parisian cinema. He’s in love with his co-worker, Maud, but due to his shy nature, he can’t bring himself to ask her on a date.

Emile is portrayed as resourceful (able to fix machines with MacGyverism), having a passion for filmmaking, and eventually grows in courage and self-confidence as the film progresses.

Larry Mittenhands.

Person with dwarfism. From Larry the Little Freakin’ Knight/Larry of Karryon.

Larry is a small, hot-headed peasant who gets appointed as the Chosen One for the kingdom of Karryon. Unbeknownst to him, Larry was chosen by the King’s evil advisor in the hopes that Larry would fail, due to his small stature. However, it turns out that Larry is a very capable fighter, much to the evil advisor’s horror.

Niles from Fire Emblem Fates

LGBT (Bisexual)

Niles is a unit the player can play as on Conquest and in Revelation. He’s the young prince of Nohr’s retainer. The player is able to marry him no matter what gender they choose for their character.

Viola from Where We Lay Our Scene

LGBT (Trangender)

The bio by the writer of Where We Lay Our Scene is as follows:

“A skilled stylist and make-up artist. Viola is Christian’s personal stylist and closest friend. She was once also a famous model, but left the spotlight just before coming out as transgender. A kind person, she’s nonetheless a little jaded because of her experiences and will not hesitate to kick someone’s butt if they’re being ridiculous.”

Characters from Stardew Valley.

Demetrius - Person of colour. Demetrius is the local scientist in Pelican Town. He is constantly observing the local wildlife, as well as studying things in his small lab.

Demetrius also tries to be a good father to his daughter, Maru, and his step-son, Sebastian.

Maru - Person of colour (biracial–her mother has light skin). Maru is Demetrius’ daughter and is following his footsteps in becoming a scientist. She’s often in her room, working on mysterious inventions.

Maru also has a part-time job working as a nurse in the local hospital.

BMO/Beemo.

Genderfluid (is referred to as a boy, girl, lady, etc. by other characters, and herself, throughout the series). From Adventure Time.

Beemo is a happy little computer who lives with the main characters Finn and Jake. He has many interests (including soccer and pretending to be a detective) and likes to play video games with Finn and Jake.

Beemo’s body contains many features, including an electrical outlet, video game console, music player, camera, alarm clock, flashlight, and VHS player.

Dr. Alphys.

LGBT (has shown romantic attraction to a male character and a female character). Dr. Alphys is a female reptilian/dinosaurian monster that lives in a lab in a place appropriately-called “Hotland”. She is a Royal Scientist, a position she was awarded by King Asgore.

Dr. Alphys’ inventions include Mettaton (a robot), a jet pack, and an augmented cellphone that can shoot projectiles. She also enjoys watching human-made anime she finds thrown away, and eating ice cream.

Characters from [redacted] Life

Adrian - Person of colour. Adrian is a determined young man who is observant enough to realise that the world he’s trapped in is fake. Realising that he’s in a horror game, he decides to go and find a means of escaping. As the player character, we discover that Adrian’s narration is dry and somewhat cynical.

Tirle - Agender. Tirle is a mysterious ghost-whisperer who uses Neo-Wiccan practices to help put spirits to rest. They’re (Tirle) is soft-spoken and patient, described as having a voice that sounds both young and old, and wise yet child-like. Tirle gives Adrian’s girlfriend a tarot card reading, as well as a séance.

Mr. Numbers (first image) and Mr. Wrench from 2014’s Fargo.

Mr. Wrench is deaf and communicates through American Sign Language, with Mr. Numbers acting as his translator.

Although they work together as hitmen, Mr. Numbers and Mr. Wrench are shown as inseparable partners who honestly care about each other, and what we end up with is a rather touching relationship. It’s later revealed that they knew each other as children and Numbers taught himself sign language to help communicate with Wrench.

Mr. Wrench is played by actor Russell Harvard, who also identifies as being deaf, and considers American Sign Language to be his first language. (x)
