“Witches: We Need You!”
Found this out in Los Angeles.
What my mother knows
I imagine my mother as a girl
I can almost hear the sound of the cleaning brush scrubbing the tile floor
I can taste the peas she’s swallowing along with her needs so she can get up from the dinner table
I can see her sitting there with her mother my grandmother asking “why is daddy at the hospital again”
I can feel my grandmother holding in the truth like a bomb
Not daring to let my mother know that her father had another manic episode
I want to hold an unlit cigarette in my mouth and scream just like my grandfather did
So maybe I’ll understand why he had had to die
So maybe I won’t feel like I missed out on great times with him
It’ll feel almost like a gift my mother never received
I know he was a good man
I know my mother loved him
But there’s a reason my mother learned at an early age to put family before herself
I don’t hate him in fact I love him
But a part of me believes my life can go on never knowing what my mother does

The first night we spoke again
I layed in bed listing to love poems
Occasionally I would close my eyes picturing the curve of your lips
Isn't it funny how love works
I haven't created a love poem in months yet one night passes
And I'm filled with sappy lines for you
I've begun to lose my mind and I'm too busy writing these words to you to go try to find it
My best poems have never been about my lovers
But I will keep writing them for you until I get it right
Until you have a stack of love poems as tall as my fears
So that maybe you'll understand the paranoia that looms over me
Until maybe you understand that when I speak to you every sappy love song I’ve ever heard suddenly makes sense
And maybe it wasn’t love at first sight but it’s the kind of love that once you see it you never want to let it go
I never want to let you go

self & the internet
The other day a 7 year old told me she would never be a princess. I asked her why not and she said, ‘Princesses are taught to be pretty and wait around for love and I’d rather rule the kingdom.’ I told her she could do both and she rolled her eyes and said, ‘there’s not enough time to be a queen and deal with stinky boys, miss.’ And I think there’s a lot to learn from a girl who chooses to build herself a castle instead of waiting around for a stinky prince. That girl will someday rule the world while the rest of us are still chasing fairytales.
