One of my favorite little moments from the overwhelmingly inspiring Barbie movie.
I’ll take my life in my hands
Every time I walk back into that library
Just as I have every time
I’ve watched a movie at the cinema
Since twenty-twelve
Every time I’ve grocery shopped in-store
Instead of using curbside pickup or delivery
For years now
Every time I’m a member of any crowd
Literally any crowd
I think about it
Always grateful
That at least schools weren’t this dangerous
Until my junior year at Union High
Oh, the poor kids who go there now
I wrote this poem the day after an "active shooter" scare at the library where I tutor, back in April. It really shook me up, even though it was a false alarm (kind of—I mean, there was a violent man on site and we didn't know if he was armed, so the threat was very real at the time).
First two quotes from Great Women Authors substack, the first by Ruth Ozeki, the second by Anna Weyant. Third quote from Cindy Sherman, ft.com.
“Knowing why you love what you do is important. What’s feeding you that makes you keep coming back for more?”
