Aurora dreamed of an endlessly winding staircase. Each time she sensed the end around the corner, she would look up in dismay to see that they still went on and on and on, far up into the darkness at least a hundred more steps.
She would rally herself anew, pause just long enough to catch her breath and move on. After what felt like a lifetime, when her thighs began to ache and her lungs to burn, Aurora at last reached the top of it. She half expected to see some other obstacle in sight, but instead was greeted by a shadowed hallway.
There was a burst of light too quick for her to make out what lay past it. Her thighs still screamed with pain from her grueling plight. Her body tensed with apprehension at continuing forward.
“Want me to go on?”
Aurora frowned at a voice that did not belong there. It rang with familiarity but in her dreamstate, she could not place it.
Something unknown shocked her. Only when she recoiled away from the invisible assailant that awareness grabbed at her violently- but not before she tripped back over the staircase and felt a very long, excruciating fall open up beneath her like jaws.
It was then that Aurora’s eyes sprang open and in the darkness, a silhouette hovered over her horizontal form. Whoever it was, their hand was gripping the inside of her thigh aggressively, enough to cause a swell of panic to leaden her chest.
Aurora grabbed at the shadow with her heart caught in her throat. A quick flash of memory sparked before her eyes and she remembered the three assassins who had struggled with Dalton to kill her- she had nearly forgotten to be afraid of them. Had they finally returned to finish the job? The lizard part of her brain recognized that there was only one shadow, but that didn’t make her any less afraid.
When her small fingers coiled around a forearm hard with muscle and taught with use, realization suddenly dawned on her and she sat bolt upright. The fog of sleep had all but dissipated with the surge of adrenaline, leaving a slow, churning anxiety in its wake.
”Eric?” She hissed into the darkness and the looming shape seemed to breathe.
His voice was rigid as steel and just as cold.
“Get up.”
Aurora dithered as long as she could, pretending to fumble with the sheets wrapped around her body, but Eric’s patience was only so extensive and she felt it wearing dangerously thin. She stole a glance around the dorm to see that all the other initiates were still sleeping soundlessly. No one to witness a murder if there was to be one.
Dangling Four in front of him didn’t seem like such a bright idea now.
Deciding she was taking too long, Eric growled and yanked her to her feet by her elbow. His grip was painful. He drug her out into the hall and didn’t stop until he turned into a dim corridor out of earshot.
“Eric, you’re hurting me,” she tugged her arm free, but he shoved her back into a corner. Her head bounced dizzily off the rough granite and he was quick to fill the space between them.
“Do you think this is funny? Do you think this is a goddamn joke?” He got into her face, and his grey blue eyes were stormy.
Aurora straightened bravely, her nose nearly touching his. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Her voice thankfully didn’t betray the alarm inside of her.
His hand was quick as a flash, and suddenly he had her by the throat. His hold was firm, but yielding enough that she could keep her breath, uneven and shallow as it was.
Aurora gulped under his palm, instinctively bringing her own hands up to feebly try and pry him off of her with no use other than to make him angrier.
“Did you let him fuck you?”
Aurora completely blanked.
“What?”
Eric’s nose wrinkled in annoyance. His breath was hot on her face, dazing her.
“Did. You. Let. Him. Fuck you.”
She comprehended that he was referring to Four- he must have been in the cafeteria last night after all to witness them. Her first reaction was to be offended that he thought it was any of his business anyways even if she had done anything with Four- which she had not.
“That’s none of your business,” was she brave or stupid? She held his glare with one of her own even when his other hand suddenly gripped the back of her thigh, wrenching her more tightly against him. His nostrils flared and he vaguely reminded Aurora of a wildcat frustrated at the struggle of its kill.
“Did you let him touch you?” This question wasn’t as tempestuous but the bridled anger was there just beneath the surface.
Aurora clawed at his hands then, wiggling against him to free herself from both his grip and the wall. She witnessed a flame of excitement light up in his eyes.
“That’s none of your business either, asshole.”
Eric snarled and shoved her harder against the wall; she squealed involuntarily and the voice in the back of her head screamed for her to be careful.
“I’ll decide what my business is, and you are definitely my fucking business!” His mouth crashed into hers and when Aurora yelped fearfully, he bit down on her bottom lip with his teeth hard enough to draw blood. She could taste it on her tongue, and then on his as he licked slowly across the cut. She was too stunned to react any farther than trying to make herself as small as she could.
His hand released her throat and she gulped in air greedily past his lips. It moved up into her hair to tangle as it had before, less a move of passion than a means to pin her in place beneath him and keep her there. He pulled, eliciting another small yelp from Aurora as her scalp sparked with pain.
“I’m the only one who can touch you,” he shoved a hand clumsily beneath the waistband of her sweatpants and the fear Aurora had been feeling erupted into full blown panic. She attempted to struggle, squirming against the rock and against his body, whimpering and begging.
“Hold still,” he barked in irritation and Aurora froze immediately, becoming as still as a statue in an attempt to discourage him.
As if anything could ever discourage Eric.
His fingers twisted beneath the lining of her underwear and a thrill of shock mingling with unwanted pleasure shot through her legs as his knuckles brushed against her most intimate place.
“This will be mine,” he breathed haughtily against her skin, releasing her mouth to nip at her throat. He shoved one finger inside of her and curled, smiling when she gasped so hard her body spasmed.
Aurora tried to stop him, but he knocked her hands out of the way.
“Mine and no one else’s,” when she attempted to pull her legs closed and cut off his access, he jammed a knee between them and forced her feet apart. For every move he made, she resisted. Didn’t she know by now that this only made him more determined?
“Stop fighting it, Aurora. It felt good before,” he coaxed her darkly, moving his finger slowly inside of her, spreading the wetness between her legs. Her muscles clenched hard at the intrusion, and the thought of being the first person to touch her this way made him painfully hard.
She whined desperately, her chest heaving beneath him. “Why, Eric?” Her voice was so small and watery, he almost didn’t hear it.
“Because I can. And I want to hear those pretty little sounds you make again,” his teeth bit the soft skin under her jaw and the thought of it bruising made him smile. It was a way to mark his territory; he bit lower then, trailing down across her shoulder and soothing the stinging flesh with his lips and tongue. He bit down hard enough on her collarbone to make her squeal. She was tiring of the struggle, he could feel it.
With the pad of his thumb, Eric massaged deep circles into her clit, pumping his middle digit harder, feeling her steadily loosening as he forced the pleasure from her body.
Aurora’s desperate grip on his forearms slackened fractionally and without meaning to, her head tilted back to expose her neck to him. Her eyes closed and she tried to imagine that she was somewhere else, or tried to will him to stop with her mind. She couldn’t escape from him. She had to still be dreaming.
“Good girl,” he praised her, kissing back up the curve of her neck to find her mouth again. Feeling that she was properly in place and wouldn’t try to break away if he released her, his hand untangled from her hair and slid downward to caress one of her breasts. He flicked expertly across the perked mound with his thumb and her nipple hardened beneath the cotton of her shirt.
Aurora sighed against him and her rigid body softened almost imperceptibly, but it was enough to fan his nerves with excitement and make him strain harder against his pants.
He was stealing the sensations from her body, drawing the pleasure out with his hands and then pushing her onwards until a thick tension began to pool between her legs and rise to the pit of her stomach. He could sense how close she was just by the flex of her hips rolling deeper into his hand. Her attempts to thwart him now were pathetic as her mind was steadily lost in the pleasant sensations.
“Eric,” she begged one last time. Her voice was hoarse and her eyebrows furrowed. Heat rose to turn her face rosy as though she were embarrassed. Her ribs were rising and falling impossibly fast under the menstruations of her breasts.
“Let it happen,” he enticed, persuading her to just roll with the pleasure rather than mentally fighting against the waves. “God, you’re so tight. I’d love to just fuck you right here against the wall.”
The low, rough words sent a shiver through Aurora that began at the base of her spine and made the top of her head tingle. There was still a part of her that tried to hold out in the form of her shifting to arch away from him each time he pushed deeper, or the way her fingers dug into the muscles of his upper arms like she were trying to stop them from moving.
Determined to make her finish this time, set on feeling her crumble around him, Eric snaked his hand under her shirt, palming the sensitive flesh until Aurora quivered and mewled. She was burning hot beneath his touch.
“That’s it,” he dropped the hand from her breasts and cupped the back of her thigh again to hitch her left leg around his waist. He reached around under her plump ass to stretch at the sensitive skin. This new sensation seemed to be the one that finally sent her tumbling over the edge.
Aurora suddenly arched and every muscle in her body went rigid, her feet trembling as she could no longer support herself upright and being pinned between Eric and the wall was the only thing supporting her. Fiery bursts of light overwhelmed her vision and she screwed her eyes shut tight. Her walls clenched viciously around his hand, but he worked through the intense spasms as she rode out the orgasm in a panting, humming mess. Her fingernails raked white hot, burning scratches into his arms, causing him to hiss through his teeth as she drew blood from him as well. He hungrily smothered each cry until her body went slack and she fell clumsily away from him.
“There you go,” he praised. Eric allowed her to slide down the wall until she was sitting on the floor, shaking. Her breaths were returning to her in ragged gasps and the blush that had colored her pale skin was beautifully bright.
He crouched down in front of her, lifted a finger to her chin to make her look at him. Her green eyes were dazed and tired.
“That wasn’t so bad was it? Now you know that fighting won’t do you any good.” His steel blue eyes glittered in the same way a predator’s sparkle when spotting wounded prey. Aurora’s lip quivered as though she would start crying, and Eric pulled it down lazily with his thumb to reveal her straight white teeth. The prickle of blood he had created was a dry smear by now. Her lip was swollen and bruised.
Eric kissed her chastely on the cheek before standing back to his feet.
“I always get what I want, Aurora.” It was as much an explanation as a warning, not to be taken lightly. He turned to leave then, rounding a corner into the darkness and leaving her shaking and whimpering there on the floor.

Aurora’s mother died in childbirth. With her, naturally. No one talked about it much, but she guessed perhaps her mother lost too much blood. Aurora didn’t have very extensive knowledge in the subject of birthing children, but what little she did hear of usually involved something along those lines.
If Aurora’s mother had survived, her life would have probably been very different. Her father wouldn’t see the defeated, ashen face of her mother each time he looked at his little girl’s pale cheeks and bright green eyes. And that blood red hair, the exact same shade as the woman who created her. Almost the exact shade of the life that drained so quickly from her. With each passing year, Aurora took on more and more of her mother’s qualities.
Her father wouldn’t have hated her for destroying the love his life with her very existence, if things had worked out. That was why he tried so hard to punish Aurora. He never outright said so, but she guessed it. Why else would he lay a brutal hand on her? What had she done to deserve such scorn? Even as a child who barely understood the world, she had a sense of why her home life was so challenging. What a terrible thing to know when you’re barely big enough to ride a bike.
But there was still some fortune, as dreary and small as it was. Her older brother, David.
She could think about him now without it hurting so much. She could conjure his face into her mind, that boyish smile he never grew out of, and she no longer felt sick with sadness for it. The pang of loss had dulled with time and the betrayal she felt for his absence had morphed into something like regret. For him or for her, she didn’t know.
David was endlessly kind, especially to Aurora. He was Amity through and through and though he had their father’s chocolate brown hair and long nose, he possessed nothing else of the cruel man. He was always gentle and friendly, and Aurora couldn’t recall a single time when his voice was ever raised in anger. When their father went to hit Aurora for not paying attention in class or daydreaming during chores, David courageously took up his position between them. He never fought back, never screamed or threatened the old man, but his solid presence was sometimes enough. It didn’t always do much good when they were younger and he barely reached his father’s waist, but soon David grew to stand equal to the bitter man’s stature.
He always promised Aurora he would protect her.
David had been fifteen when Aurora came home from class. She was so excited to give him the clay figure of a bird, that she hadn’t noticed the heavy silence in the room at first, or the elders standing in the corner of the room. She was told he was gone. Dead. Some underlying sickness no one had known about before. Their voices were so empty and void of any real sympathy. They hadn’t known him the way she knew him. That still stung, even now so many years later. The worst part was the way their father- no, just her father now- looked forlorn for a child he never loved, and the tears that fell from his eyes seemed more like acid. That made her bitter.
If David were still around, Aurora would probably have stayed in Amity. She would have never left him, not in this lifetime. He would have saved her, would have stopped their father from ever hurting her again. She knew deep down that when he was old enough, David would have found a home for them far away and she would have been safe. She wouldn’t have been pushed to join Dauntless by desperate self preservation and loneliness.
He would have known what to do in this situation, and he would have told Aurora to stick up for herself and don’t let anyone use her. She could practically hear it now, him telling her to straighten up and puff up her chest and put out her chin. And don’t ever look away.
’He can’t take anything away from you. You are who you are and that’ll never change. No one can hurt you if you don’t let them.’ Funny how those words had been meant for their dad, but they fit perfectly into the present situation she found herself in. What would he be saying to her now, if he knew that she had raised her hands in violence and had drawn the blood of other people? No better than their useless dad. Would he have been disappointed at her Choosing Ceremony?
Aurora realized that Four reminded her a lot of her brother. Not so much in physical similarities, but in manner. Four was firm with her, but always reassuring. Even his sparring moves held a presence of gentleness, like he didn’t want to be too rough with her because he sensed she needed a break. His questions were never prying, but he said what needed to be said even if Aurora didn’t feel like hearing it. He told her to suck it up, because no one could change anything for her but she herself. Of course she hadn’t told him about the more personal encounters between herself and Eric, but he understood the gist of being in a situation you felt you had no control over. Four was quick to catch on though, and Aurora got the impression he knew a little bit more than she was willing to reveal. Maybe he had seen this happen a lot. She wouldn’t be surprised if Eric had made a thousand girls feel like this.
The two were surrounded by a comfortable silence as he dipped a six inch piece of hardwood into bright red paint. The plan now was to teach her hand to hand weapons combat, mostly how to not get split from nose to navel by a blade. Rather than using a real knife though, he was using this wood and if he managed to touch her with it, the red would reveal the points of contact and create a map of her mistakes. Sometimes when you’re adrenaline was surging, you didn’t even know you were injured until it wore off and you felt the pain or saw the blood. He knew that all too well.
He had gone over the moves with her a dozen times now; ‘hands up, feet apart, keep your eyes on mine, not on the knife. Block with the outside of your arm when I swing.’
She was expecting him to turn and set up the scene before he attacked, so she was caught off guard when he wheeled around and brought the armed hand arching overhead towards her. The very edge of the stick grazed from her right shoulder to her left hip as she tried to leap back out of the way, leaving a thick smear of crimson paint trailing after it.
“You are very, very dead.”
“I didn’t know you were going to do that!” She pouted.
“Do you ever know when someone is going to pull a knife on you?”
“Do it again. I got it this time,” Aurora backed up a pace until they were more than an arm’s reach apart.
Again, Four didn’t hesitate or explain what his move would be. He ducked and lunged, moving more quickly than Aurora ever thought someone of his well-muscled size could. But she was ready.
Just as his arm whipped out, she ducked agilely beneath the line of fire and shoved her shoulder into his lower stomach and lurched, flipping him over just like he showed her the first time they trained together. With a surprised grunt, he tumbled to the floor, the fake knife falling from his fist and clattering just inches from his reach. This time, Aurora spun with him and before he could roll back onto his feet and grab the knife, she leaped onto him. Her knees straddled his stomach while one hand found his throat to hold him down and the other jerked the weapon up before he could find it.
Aurora was smiling with dark triumph. A thin red line of paint dripped horizontally under Four’s jaw while his eyes seemed dazed.
“You’re deader,” she panted.
Four waved his hands palm out in defeat, but the grin on his face was proud. “There you go. You won’t even need the rest of your team if you keep this up. But one thing…”
Suddenly he brought his knees up into her back and she went sprawling forward with a gasp. He was on her then, pinning her wrists to the ground in both hands.
“If you’re going to sit on someone, distribute your weight so they can’t do what I just did. Lord knows you don’t have much of it.”
Aurora breathed an embarrassed laugh and blew the hair out of her eyes. With a chuckle, Four released her and laid parallel with his back against the cold floor. For a moment, the only sounds were their breath as they both caught up.
A light above them flickered with an electric hum.
“Were you nervous on your first mission?” She suddenly asked.
Four peered sideways at her and propped himself up on an elbow. His gaze was speculative.
“Everyone is nervous on their first mission. And if they’re not, they’re lying.”
Aurora doubted Eric had ever been nervous in his life. She frowned at these thoughts.
Four reached out and placed a hand on her thigh and patted reassuringly, but the way it made Aurora’s breath stall made her think it was meant for something else. She gulped but didn’t scoot away, choosing instead to ignore it.
“You’ll do fine. Follow your orders and remember to keep your guard up and it’ll be a breeze. The Factionless like to make noise but rarely does it ever turn into an actual fight. At worst, you might need to flex your muscles to discourage them. They’re not a functioning organization, remember?”
Aurora breathed out through her nose and risked a glance up at him. His expression was inquisitive, maybe a little sympathetic for her. There wasn’t the edge of poorly disguised hunger that Eric possessed, and it made Aurora think that Four’s thoughts were totally genuine.
“Eric told me they got guns somehow. And they’ve gathered in a bigger group than usual and haven’t dispersed when threatened.” She tried to hide the worry in her voice but it didn’t quite work. Would she have to fight them? A group of faces she’d never seen before, people she’d never met angry with her to the point of violence. Everyone was telling her it would be no big deal, but she had never had real experience in combat apart from the one fight she half-lossed. The thought of being stuck on a mission with Eric in a group of full fledged Dauntless soldiers made her feel sick with anxiety.
Four rose a little then, balancing himself on his forearm and tilting his body to face hers. He was looming over her now, and the flickering light above cast shadows over his face.
“If you keep worrying about it, something bad will happen. Eric is difficult to work with and stubborn as hell in the best of times, but he’s not foolish enough to walk into a situation he doesn’t think he’ll get out of.”
Aurora did have to give him that. As deep as her sense of survival went, his had to be a mile deeper.
Four rubbed her thigh again, but she found it comforting rather than invading. She subconsciously gravitated towards it, seeking further reassurance. She didn’t feel like he was taking advantage of her like Eric would in this situation. Like Eric did last night. How could two Leaders be so drastically unsimilar? Two very different aspects of Dauntless life.
“Can I ask you something?” The words were out of her mouth before she had decided to speak.
“Go for it.”
She hesitated, trying to decide just how to put the tangled thoughts jumbling around inside her head together. When she did ask, her voice was slow and careful.
“Do you ever wish… you’d just gone Factionless instead?… Or that you’d stayed where you were?” Four had never told her anything about where he was originally from, whether he was a transfer or a born-Dauntless, but the way he understood her thoughts so perfectly made her think perhaps he had his own experience with similar problems and feelings of not belonging.
He seemed a little taken aback by her line of question. But he answered easily enough. He shrugged the shoulder he wasn’t bearing his weight on.
“Dauntless doesn’t have to be scary. It is what you make of it. Every faction has their ups and downs, but for me… Dauntless was a way to protect myself. A way to do good that I didn’t think I could ever achieve elsewhere. I’ve never met a transfer who didn’t feel the same, in a way. Everyone comes here to be better and braver than they were before.”
Aurora was silent for a long time, mulling over his answer. He was right, she knew that. But her reasons for transferring were a little more selfish than his seemed to be.
“I think I would have stayed in Amity if… if things had worked out a little differently. I wasn’t running to a better future. I was running away.” She sat up then and he slowly rose beside her. Never in her life had she hinted at her past to another person. Not even Lyanna or Jaime, her best friends, knew what her life had been like before.
Out of the pan and into the fire.
She felt a strong hand rubbing small soothing circles into the small of her back.
“That doesn’t make you a bad person or weak, if that’s what you’re wondering. Every person has their demons. It’s just a matter of how you fight them.” He stood to his feet and held out both hands to help her up as well.
Looking up, Aurora had almost forgotten the paint across his skin, which was still wet and glossy. She skimmed her first two fingers across it, scooping up some of the color, and proceeded to draw a smily face on his cheek. He laughed but held still while she let loose her artistic talents, but grabbed her before she could get away so he could do the same with the paint on the front of her shirt. Instead of a single happy face, he peppered both cheeks with lopsided flowers, then a sun with curvy heat lines on her freckled chin.
“There,” he took a step back to admire his work. “It’s impossible for you not to be happy with flowers and sunshine. Now let’s get some dinner.”
…………..
By the time dinner was being served, they had both washed the paint from their skin and Aurora had changed into a clean shirt.
A few people stared when Aurora strolled casually into the cafeteria with Four, making a point of not looking around, especially not towards Eric’s table. She shivered to think of his reaction at seeing her with Four. Well she had told him hadn’t she? He started this game first. She thought she felt someone’s gaze on her but didn’t know if it was just paranoia.
She and Four sat at the same table they had the first time they had breakfast together, at the far side of the cafeteria against a wall. Aurora sat with her back to the crowd.
“I was thinking,” Four mumbled through a mouthful of burger.
“Uh oh. That’s not good.” Aurora smirked when he halfheartedly tossed a baby carrot at her.
“Anyways. I was thinking, have you given any thought to what you want to do after initiation? Intelligence, training, guard?”
Aurora actually hadn’t thought of that at all. While all the other initiates were making plans for their roles in Dauntless, she had just been focusing on getting from one day to the next.
She sat back in her chair. “Not really to be honest. I guess that depends how things play out from here… I’ll be gone while initiation takes place for everyone else. I don’t know if that gives me an automatic pass or if I’ll get back and be kicked out.”
Four smiled and slid the rest of his half-eaten chocolate cake across the table to her. She stuffed a forkful of the dessert into her mouth. The sugary icing hurt her teeth but it was too good to go to waste.
“The only way you would fail is if you end up dead, and then hey, what is there to worry about?”
Aurora rolled her eyes sarcastically. “I feel so much better now, thank you Four! But in all seriousness, I don’t know. I’ve never even been into the intelligence room and I don’t know all that much about computers. I guess I could be a soldier. It seems pretty simple to just follow orders and go where I’m told to.”
Four took another bite of the burger while considering her answer. “I think you’d be good in intelligence. I can train you. It’s easy once you get the hang of it. Monitoring surveillance, writing protocol, following up on reports from other factions. You could work with me in the control room.”
Aurora was astonished to see that his face was completely devoid of any joke.
“Really? Why would you want that? Do you usually recruit initiates yourself?”
He shook his head, sipped the water in front of him. “No, never actually. I just like you.” He winked and Aurora’s face flushed.
“You’re smart, Aurora. Taking a job like soldiering would be beneath you. You’ve got more to offer than that. I don’t think you’d like anything in Leadership, but I do think you’d be good in the controls.” He spoke like a businessman, but the look in his dark eyes was ardent, eager.
Aurora was silent as she went over this revelation. It was tantalizing- surprising, but tempting. She had never really considered a position in the control room to be within her reach. The more she thought about it, the more interested she was. No daily combat, no exhaustive directives, no ending up on the other end of a loaded gun. She wouldn’t have to fight with the Factionless, or run patrols through the other three factions. She wouldn’t be stuck on the Wall freezing during winter and melting during the summer. And best of all, Eric wouldn’t be her boss. She knew Four wouldn’t make her do anything she wouldn’t want to.
She made up her mind.
“Okay. You’ve got a deal. When I get back, you can show me the ropes.”
“Great choice.” Four chucked another carrot at her playfully, and Aurora couldn’t help but feel hopeful.

Aurora awoke some time in the early morning and felt violently sick. She scrambled out of the bed and staggered around searching for a bathroom. If she hadn’t been so focused on not spilling her guts right there in the middle of the floor, she may have been shocked or ashamed at who’s room she was in.
She collapsed in the bathroom and what alcohol was left in her stomach came up painfully. Her head was pounding with a sharp rhythmic agony in her temples and if she opened her eyes, it grew so much worse. Even after she threw up, her stomach still felt wretched and her mind was swimming.
“It’s too hot,” she whimpered out loud. Sweat made her hair stick to her skin and the dress felt like it was burning her. She struggled to reach back and pull down the zipper, but she was still clumsy and couldn’t do it. While another wave of nausea and dizziness washed over her, she settled for lying down against the cool tile of the bathroom floor and fell back into unconsciousness almost immediately.
…………..
Aurora was startled awake a second time by an alarm blaring outside the bathroom door. Her headache flared again and she groaned.
“Turn it offf!” She shouted, and a second later it was silenced. She heard muffled thumps and footsteps coming closer but she didn’t lift her cheek from the cold floor.
The bathroom door slowly swung open with a creak and she cracked her eyes open to see Eric’s bare feet standing in the doorway. The light shot right through her skull.
“Go ‘way,” she threw an arm over her face to try and make everything dark again.
Eric was silent a moment, assessing the damage.
“Hold on,” he said and disappeared. He returned shortly after with two pills and a glass of cold water. He nudged Aurora, stirring her out of an almost doze. She could barely bring herself to struggle upright. As soon as her head was up, she swayed uneasily.
“This’ll help your headache,” he pushed the glass into one hand and the pills into another, and Aurora swallowed them grudgingly. She wanted him to go away and let her die.
After another minute, “Okay, now you need to take a shower. Sit in the hot water, it’ll make you feel better.” He put his hands under her arms to help her to her feet but she protested pitifully.
“No, just leave me alone to die.”
Eric laughed and she grimaced at the sound so close to her ear.
“Come on, be a good girl.” She didn’t give him a bit of help as he tried to steady her. “If you don’t get in the shower then we’re going to training. It’s five, remember?”
Aurora’s mouth opened in horror at that and she was suddenly bolt upright. She was certain if she had to train with him right now, she would be tossed into a shallow grave before morning’s end.
“My dress,” she fumbled awkwardly again with her zipper, still a little drunk. Eric hesitated to help her out of it. Last night was bad enough. He didn’t think he’d be able to restrain himself again. But she was pathetic and miserable and couldn’t help herself.
Aurora was somewhat thankful for the god awful hangover. If she wasn’t so consumed in feeling like shit, she would have been mortified when Eric slowly pulled her zipper down, revealing the smooth curve of her back, the indentation of her spine, her bare shoulders, all the way down to the dimples above her ass. She was bare before him save for the black lace thong that matched her dress. Bits and pieces of broken memories were coming back to her slowly and out of order.
Being carried in Eric’s arms. Too many shots. Lyanna’s boyfriend gave her something. Eric brought her to his apartment. Eric’s bedroom. Eric kissed her! Aurora asked Eric to kiss her! She groaned at herself and put her head into her hands. What the hell was she thinking?
He mistook her mortification for another bout of nausea. If he had to stall at all or stop himself from staring at her, he didn’t let on. Then again, Aurora was too red faced to bring herself to open her eyes at all.
She felt him brush past her and she had enough sense to cross her arms over her chest and hide herself from him. But he didn’t touch her; instead, he reached around to start the shower and turn on the hot water.
“Get in. Don’t get out until you can stand up by yourself.” He tried to make his voice even, but Aurora could hear the strain in it. He was quick to exit the bathroom then, closing the door behind him and leaving Aurora to slowly be surrounded by hot steam. She waited until she heard his footsteps disappear before she dragged her underwear down and unsteadily stepped into the shower. The scent of him was all around her, in the air, on her skin. On her mouth. For a long time, she entertained the idea of turning the water to scalding and letting it turn her into a soup.
…………..
When Aurora stepped out of the shower a long time later, there was a fresh black shirt and folded pair of jeans waiting for her on the counter by the sink. Her headache was becoming steadily bearable, but the mere thought of another shot of vodka made her stomach roll.
The shirt was Eric’s, she discovered when she brought it up for inspection and it was too large for her, and smelled so intensely of him that it was like he was standing next to her. She hesitated for a second, glancing back down at her dress in a wrinkled heap on the floor. She doubted she could get back into the tight thing by herself.
Oh well, what was the harm?
She pulled it over her damp skin and tugged her still-wet hair free of the collar. Her nose was filled with the light oil of his cologne that reminded her of the heavy fragrance of cedar and something sweeter that she couldn’t quite place. It was sharp and warm.
The pants, she realized with a shock, were her size. Her first instinct was to drop them, believing they must have belonged to some other girl he’d brought home at one point. But instead, she slowly brought it to her nose and inhaled. Rather than flowery perfume or even his own smell, they were vaguely chemical and smelled of fresh synthetic material.
“Oh.” They were new then, totally unworn. It was beyond her why Eric would waste his own money buying her a new pair of jeans to change into, and as she felt a blush creep up her chest, she hastily pushed the idea away.
Her eyes caught onto a note that she hadn’t noticed on the counter before. She picked it up carefully between her fingers. It was scrawled in Eric’s neat, uniform handwriting.
“Training tonight at 6.” Aurora groaned out loud then and let her head fall back. God, he really was trying to kill her. Slowly but still just as violent.
The apartment was empty when Aurora got out of the bathroom, no sign of Eric anywhere. She was glad for that, because since her hangover was slowly but surely disappearing, her mind was clearing and the memories from last night were flooding in.
What if he had tried to have sex with her? Would she have let him? Aurora was so piqued at herself.
But you did like it. The voice popped unwelcome into her mind.
With her dress folded and tucked over her arm, Aurora hurried out of the quiet apartment and locked the door behind her.
…………..
The corridors through Dauntless were mostly quiet; Aurora didn’t know if it was because it was still early or if everyone else in the compound was nursing a nasty hangover too. The few people she did pass looked like zombies staggering through the halls.
Aurora glimpsed a familiar face standing nearby the dorms occupied on a phone, and her stomach dropped when she realized it was the girl she had been dancing with last night. Katie, was it? She was horrified when she remembered the rude things she had said to Katie in front of Eric and as much as she wanted to run and hide, she knew she needed to apologize. The last thing she needed was another enemy.
With a breath to prepare herself for the worst, Aurora approached.
“Hey, Katie is it?” The brown-haired girl looked up expectantly from her phone at Aurora, confused first but then realization dawned across her eyes. Aurora was relieved that she didn’t immediately scowl or try to hit her, so she went on.
“I’m so sorry about what I said to you last night. I was drunk and stupid and I shouldn’t have embarrassed you in front of Eric like that-”
Katie’s mouth suddenly broke into a toothy smile and she put up a hand to stop Aurora. “No, it’s fine, really. Shit happens when you’re drunk, it’s totally cool.” She laughed a little self consciously but seemed sincere. She was in a surprisingly good mood, it seemed.
You have no idea, Aurora thought to herself.
Just then she remembered the hair tie secured around her wrist. “Well here, I wanted to give this back last night but I couldn’t find you.” Because Eric took me back to his apartment.
With a little surprise, Katie nodded graciously. “Oh wow, thanks.”
Satisfied that things were smoothed between her and Katie, Aurora waved a quick goodbye and headed back into the dorms to put her dress away and swap her heels for boots. The thought occurred to change her shirt as well, but she decided otherwise… It was kind of growing on her.
Aurora found her friends in the cafeteria for breakfast. Her stomach still felt unwell but she knew she would be feeling worse if she didn’t try to eat something. She settled for a plain biscuit with nothing on it.
Lyanna was, unsurprisingly, wearing Rick’s shirt from last night. They both seemed to relax when Aurora joined them. She wondered vaguely if they had looked for her before they left.
At least I didn’t end up with another douchey bartender. No… just a douche.
“Where did you go last night?” Jaime asked curiously, leaning forward across the table.
Aurora wanted to say she just went back to the dorms, but that was clearly a lie, and they were both eyeing her too-large t-shirt with raised eyebrows. She hoped to god they couldn’t tell who it belonged to.
Before she could find her voice, Jaime spoke again, assuming the obvious. “No way! Aurora got some honey last night?” She took a sip of her coffee and grinned mischievously at her red-haired friend.
Aurora’s entire face was hot and she had to look away or burst into sinful flames.
Lyanna unexpectedly but thankfully changed the subject then. “Did you not have that special training or whatever again this morning? You usually skip breakfast during it.”
Aurora shrugged, trying to keep it nonchalant as she took a bite of her very dry biscuit.
“Nah, Eric wasn’t around. I don’t really feel up for early training anyways,” that wasn’t really a lie at all. Was it?
Lyanna snorted then, causing Aurora to look up in bewilderment. “Yeah I’m sure he wasn’t! He left with Katie last night before the party was over. She’s been going on and on about it all morning,” Lyanna stuck her finger into her mouth and pretended to gag.
Aurora suddenly felt very, very sick. Ice pooled in her stomach and she felt herself sway in her seat but tried to cover it by putting her elbows on the table. She was starting to become faint.
“Really? You sure?” Her voice felt weak and forced.
Lyanna nodded without glancing at Aurora or noticing her change in demeanor, not suspicious of her friend’s intrigue in the slightest. “Yep. Saw them myself. She was practically dragging him out by the shirt collar. It was so gross to see her all over him. I mean, I know I was pretty wasted but good lord woman…” She rolled her eyes at the memory.
Aurora struggled to brush it off, but it wasn’t happening. She wanted to throw up. She wanted to run away. She was so confused. How could that have happened?
But Eric was there when she went to sleep? She churned back through the early morning, trying to search through the cloud of her hangover to tell if she could notice any difference in him.
She stifled a moan when she realized he had been fully dressed apart from his shoes when he had found her in the bathroom… like he hadn’t been to sleep.
“You okay?” Jaime asked with a frown of concern. Aurora shook herself, tried to work the blood back into her face by massaging her temples.
“Yeah, just feel like shit.” Another not-lie. “I think I need to go lie down for a bit.”
Without waiting for a response, she swung her legs out from under the table and stormed out of the cafeteria with tears threatening to break from her eyes. As hard as she blinked them back, they still began to fall before she could get safely back to the dormitory.
Aurora couldn’t believe it. She couldn’t even wrap her head around it. He went back and fucked her? The girl Aurora had been hanging out with! After what happened between them! She was so pissed off at both him and herself, she was shaking and seething mad. She wanted to go hide under her covers and never show her face in Dauntless ever again.
“Fuck that,” she growled out loud and turned away from the dorms, marching a furious trace back to his office with her teeth grinding painfully. She knew he would be there. He was too damn obsessed with his work to miss out on that too.
This time when Aurora reached it, there was an older receptionist-sort tapping away behind the computer in the lobby. She looked up startled as Aurora barged past her, and only had enough time to raise herself and start to say, “No, don’t!” before Aurora slammed the door open with an echoing crash.
She had enough grace to be glad that he was alone, because she would have made one hell of a scene if there were others there as witness. He looked up boredly from the paperwork at his desk, but his eyes opened wide when he saw it was Aurora.
“Aurora? What are you-?”
She closed the door behind her with an equally loud bang. “Are you kidding me, Eric?! You went back and fucked my friend while I was asleep in your bed?!” Her vision was red, she was so fucking mad.
He rose cautiously from his desk, narrowing his icy blue eyes at her. The smirk on his face was so smug, she wanted to claw it off with her fingernails.
“If I didn’t know any better, I’d think you were jealous, Aurora.”
“What! Ugh!” She lurched forward and before she even knew what she was doing, she had grabbed hold of the stapler on his desk and chucked it at him. He dodged it easily enough but didn’t have time to recover before she hurtled the paperweight and pen holder too. They both hit him square in the chest, the latter spilling its contents into a mess all over the floor.
His jaw clenched and he darted around the desk then, grabbing her painfully by the shoulders and pulling her up so hard her feet nearly left the ground. In her fury, she couldn’t even bring herself to be afraid. She was just pissed. Hurt, and pissed.
“Is that what you’re into, Eric? Tricking drunk girls into your apartment and moving onto the next after you take advantage of them?”
Careful. She had forgotten the other times he reacted sorely to her challenges.
His eyes flashed. “I didn’t trick you into anything. Maybe you don’t remember because you were so trashed, but you told me to kiss you. And last I checked, I don’t owe you shit, especially not an explanation. I brought you back there to keep an eye on you. Nothing more.”
Aurora felt her adrenaline wavering and her lip started to quiver. “Yeah? You did such a fine job considering you left! You are such an asshole.” Her voice broke and a tear fell. She wanted to scrub it away furiously but his hands on her arms didn’t allow her to move.
Eric rolled his eyes in exasperation as though he were arguing with a two year old. He let go of her. “Sadistic narcissistic asshole. There’s a great one.”
Aurora couldn’t stand to look at him for another second. She spun around on her heel, mind whirling with all the awful things she wanted to say to him and the way she wanted to hurt him.
As she reached the handle, she finally thought of something.
“Oh, by the way. I won’t be at training this evening, or tomorrow. I’ll be training with Four, again.” Before he could answer, she slammed the door behind her, but not without seeing the satisfying way his mouth fell open and his hands balled into fists.

Lyanna zipped up the back of Aurora’s new dress and whistled in admiration when she turned around. The thin material clung to her hips and thighs snugly, showing off the fine lean muscle she had developed over the past few months. Though Aurora didn’t have much to speak of in the way of breasts, the sewn in padding gave the illusion of a heavier bust and the collar of the dress dipped down far enough to show the line of her breasts.
“Hot damn mama. One thing is for sure, wherever we go tonight, the party is coming to you.”
Aurora laughed at Lyanna’s ridiculous compliments and set to work with the makeup she allowed Aurora to borrow. When her eyelids were heavily shadowed and the wings of her eyeliner sharp enough, she tussled up her hair and pouted into the mirror.
“I think I’m ready now.”
Lyanna wagged her finger. “Not yet you’re not! You’ve got everything but the finishing touch.” She popped the cap off of a brand new tube of lipstick and swathed Aurora’s lips in the bold color. It was a berry mix that was too purple to be red, but too red to be considered anything else. It matched Aurora’s mane of crimson hair almost perfectly and brought the green color of her eyes into a sharper focus.
Lyanna quickly changed into a tight black dress with a wide v neck and pulled her blonde hair back into a ruffled updo. She pencilled in some heavy black liner, a thin layer of shiny lip gloss, and the two were ready.
Jaime was planning to meet them at the party they had been invited to. Aurora didn’t know the hosts personally, but Jaime and Lyanna did. An entire apartment floor had been turned into a party house by the tenants. There was supposed to be an all-you-can-drink selection of alcohol and every genre of music. It sounded like half the compound would be in attendance, and Aurora thought it would be the perfect chance to have a little fun and forget about the daunting training and mission to come.
And especially to forget about Eric’s smug face.
……………
Aurora was on her sixth shot of vodka. The music around her pumped and boomed and purred, and there was a continuous flow of lean, fit bodies clad in shorts, skirts, dresses, and tight black clothes. The air was heavy with smoke and sharp with the scent of tequila and vodka. Wherever Aurora looked, someone had a plastic cup, a cigarette, or a joint in their hands.
“Hey, ‘Rory!” Aurora turned sluggishly at her name and Lyanna stumbled towards her. One arm was around Rick’s neck, dragging him along with her. The other hand balanced a red plastic cup and a half-smoked cigarette.
“This’s Rick!” Lyanna shouted over the wave of music and Aurora clumsily stooped into a sloppy curtsy in front of him, bowing her head as regally as she could manage. Lyanna laughed out loud at that.
“Nice to meet you,” Rick smiled down at Aurora then pulled something out of his front pants pocket. Whatever it was, it was wrapped in a clear piece of plastic.
“You want some?” He reached out to hand it to Aurora and she opened her hand automatically to take it. It was a small pink-colored tablet with a butterfly stamped on it. Aurora squinted her eyes and brought it up to her face so she could see it clearly.
“What is’t?” She shouted back.
Rick and Lyanna both laughed, the latter pulling her boyfriend into a clumsy hug and kissing his neck sloppily. Rick grinned at Aurora, “Take it and find out!”
With a shrug, Aurora popped it into the back of her mouth and borrowed Lyanna’s beer to wash it down. Might as well.
Sometime while Aurora was dancing and weaving through the crowd, the effects of the pill began to creep up on her. At first her heart rate increased and she felt nervous, but that was quelled with another shot, this time of tequila. She found that she was enjoying the music more with each passing song, and each person she danced with showed her so much affection. One girl kissed her on the cheek when the song was over and mumbled something in her ear she couldn’t quite make out. Another girl, a tall skinny brunette with dangling earrings, led Aurora through the apartments by the hand, showing her to the better spots where they could dance more freely and were offered better drinks.
Aurora knew her name was Katie, and she was four years older than she was, though Aurora didn’t recall if the girl had introduced herself or what she had been saying. While Katie tipped back a shot and screwed up her mouth at it, Aurora leaned against the drywall. Her hair was sticking to her neck, and she bunched it in her fist to lift it up so she could fan herself properly with her hands.
“Oh, here!” Katie tugged a hair tie off her wrist and shoved it at Aurora, who snatched it up gratefully.
“God you’re so amazing.” Did Aurora say that? She felt the words scrape her throat on the way out but she hadn’t planned on saying anything.
Suddenly Katie’s head snapped up and she stared past Aurora and her expression turned gravely serious. “God. He is so damn attractive.”
Aurora turned around to see who she was talking about, and her unsteady gaze fell on Eric. He was drinking from his own plastic cup and when his eyes met hers, he winked at her.
Aurora’s face should have started burning and she should have turned away, but instead she found herself bursting into a fit of giggles that showed her straight white teeth. She couldn’t tell for sure, but she thought Eric hid a smile with another tip of his cup.
“Yeah but he knowsheeisss!”
Katie elbowed Aurora playfully. “What else do you think he knows about?”
Aurora couldn’t explain the burst of inappropriate images that suddenly sprang into the front of her mind or why she wasn’t both ashamed and revolted at herself for entertaining them. The alcohol, surely.
“Oh I bet he knowsss’how to do a lotta things,” Aurora nodded appreciatively and took another shot from Katie. How many was that now? She lost count. Her head was both swimming and buzzing but she didn’t care.
Katie froze beside her and when Aurora looked up again, Eric was walking over.
“Ohh ssshit.”
“Hey Eric. What’s up?” Katie tried to act cool but Aurora caught the way her fingers twitched nervously and her cheeks flushed a rosy pink color. She seemed like a schoolgirl who had her first crush. On Eric of all people!
“Haaa ha. You’re cute,” Aurora sputtered at her, and Katie at first looked horrified, then her blush deepened considerably. She ducked her head at Aurora shyly.
“What are you drinking?” Eric asked, ignoring Katie all together and fixing Aurora with an even stare.
Aurora held up her now empty shot glass and shrugged. “Uhh vodka? And Tequila? Sssomething, whatever I get. I don’t know.” Her words spilled out of her mouth so quickly, when she thought back, she couldn’t even recall what exactly she said. Her eyebrows knitted as she tried to concentrate.
Eric’s brows arched. “You’re a regular party animal.”
Aurora snorted and started laughing again. Why was he so funny? Eric was never funny. What a joker he was. Katie eyed her a little weirdly and spoke up again to move the conversation away from Aurora.
“How long have you been here, Eric? Are you leaving any time soon?” The hopeful shine in her eyes was just too much and Aurora found herself once again blurting out the first thing she thought of with no grace to speak of.
“You mean, ‘is he taking anyone home’?” Aurora grinned slyly and chucked Katie’s arm with her knuckles. “Juss’ tell him you wanna bone’em, I’m sure e’ll be down.” She jerked her head back towards Eric with a hiccup. His eyes were wide in surprise.
Katie’s mouth fell open, and her face burned red, but no sounds came out. Aurora realized what she said too late and began backpedaling to try and take it back, but Katie was already turning away from her with a scowl.
Aurora felt bad for that.
“How much have you had to drink?” Eric’s voice shouted into her ear.
Aurora shrugged again. “Dunno. Ten? ‘Leven?”
Eric rolled his eyes as Aurora swayed on her feet and leaned back against the wall again. She suddenly remembered the hair tie Katie had given her. “Oh no! I need’ta give thisss back.” She fingered clumsily at her hair and managed to free it with a yank that made her wince even though she didn’t feel it.
Eric took her hand and started dragging her away. “Come on, you should get some fresh air.”
Aurora wanted to resist at first, but she was far too disoriented and her mind was sluggish. Eric was leading her away.
Eric. Was leading. Her away.
“Are you taking me home with you?” The thought was ridiculous and it sounded worse out in the open.
Eric chuckled and shook his head. “If I knew drunk Aurora would be so willing, I would have let you finish that whiskey in the cafeteria.”
Aurora squinted her eyes, trying to make sense of what he was saying. She vaguely remembered bits of a memory about sitting with him in the middle of the night with a stolen bottle, but it was too difficult right now to summon it.
“Soooo you are,” Aurora squeaked as her feet caught on a stair, and if he didn’t suddenly catch her, she would have went sprawling face first onto the floor.
He swung her easily up into his arms with one supporting the backs of her legs and the other cradling her shoulders.
“Oh. Wow.”
“Stop talking, Aurora.” Eric’s voice was hard but his expression wasn’t. She thought maybe he just always sounded like that. Mean ol’ Eric.
Ericssshhhmerik.
The corridors passed by too quickly and in a jumble. Aurora didn’t know how many right turns or left turns they had taken. She mumbled something unintelligible every now and again but for the most part kept quiet. Eric carried her effortlessly, as though she weren’t a staggering drunk girl who’s head was constantly lolling into his chest.
He finally came to a stop in front of a hall of apartment doors and fumbled for a key in his pocket.
Aurora gawked.
“You are bringing me home! To your apartment! Eric’s’partment!” She hiccuped and kicked uselessly to try and break free of his arms but it had as much use as writhing against a steel cage.
“Stop being ridiculous. You’re totally shitfaced. What else am I going to do, leave you to either suffocate in your own vomit or end up with a guy you don’t know in a bedroom you don’t remember?” He kicked the door open and stepped inside.
It was totally dark, but he made his way in without any problems at all. Aurora wondered if he often came home in the middle of the night to a dark home.
“I didn’t know Eric whassyourface cared at all. I thought you probably lived in a bridge or under a cave,” she slurred. He set her down and went to cut on the lights.
She squinted as the room was flooded with a soft yellow glow from the ceiling light above. She looked around and felt a faint tingle of shock at standing in the middle of his bedroom. She stood mere feet from the foot of the full sized bed, with its clean white sheets and fluffy black-encased pillows. The carpet was a creamy off white, and a dark wooden shelf matched the dark, glossy wooden frame of the bed. There wasn’t much in the way of furnishings apart from those and a nightstand and drawers.
“Dooo you spend a lot’a time in’ere?” Another hiccup.
Eric smirked and tossed his keys onto the nightstand and shrugged off his jacket. He kicked off his boots and tossed them into the corner.
“Wouldn’t you like to know?”
Without thinking about it, Aurora plopped down onto his bed and mimicked him, bending over to pull off the heels Lyanna had let her borrow to match her dress. She was clumsy and it took her far more effort than it should have to remain upright for the task. All she knew was that beds weren’t proper places for shoes.
“Here,” Eric knelt down in front of her and reached for the tiny heels. “Before you give yourself a concussion or something.” He took hold of her calf and gently slipped them off and set them out of the way.
His hand on her calf.
Hands on her legs.
Ericshandsonherlegs.
In her drunken haze, and perhaps spurred on by the giddy effects of the pill she had taken from Rick, Aurora allowed herself to venture into definitely not thoughts. His hands were warm against her flushed skin. He was only a few inches away. She peered down her nose at the strong edge of his jaw and the bold black tattoos on his neck. Where did those tattoos end up? He was handsome. She had always been so on edge before, she never really truly looked at him. But now she could see the hard sculpt of muscle beneath his shirt and the broad expanse of his chest.
“One time.”
Eric’s head jerked up and she saw that his eyes were bright and partly unfocused. Had he been thinking the same things?
“What?” He asked hesitantly.
Aurora rolled her eyes at him as though it was completely obvious what she was talking about. “Kiss me. One time. And if I don’t like it-” she ended it with a shrug.
Eric sat back on the heels of his feet. “Okay. Now I know how drunk you are.”
Aurora shook her head stubbornly. “Yes’I am drunk. But I know what I’m doin’.” She jabbed a finger into her chest.
Eric just knelt there staring at her as though trying to decide whether or not to believe her. The longer he waited, the more she became aware of the way her heart thumped and her skin tingled nervously. If he had waited any longer, she would have turned chicken and changed her mind. Even the alcohol mixed with the drugs was not enough to make her infinitely brave. It was only enough to make her do the things she couldn’t bring herself to while sober.
Eric leaned forward slowly, testing the waters and her resolve. His face was matched height to hers, and when he was only a few inches away, he stopped and his blue eyes searched her green. She could feel his warm breath fanning her face and she closed her eyes to inhale the scent of him, spiced by whatever he had been drinking. Her lips parted naturally, instinctively, and he decided she was being serious after all.
This time was nothing like when he had kissed her in his office. He had been invasive and rushed then, and this time he was softer than Aurora ever imagined he could be. He took his time.
One hand wound through her hair and tightened at the roots. It wasn’t quite painful, but the tug on her scalp caused her to suck in a breath and when her mouth naturally opened, he took slow advantage of it with his tongue. She tasted sweet, but there was a sharp edge of liquor on her lips.
The burning warmth of his skin mingled with the blood coursing through her veins, and despite the numb cloud of alcohol, Aurora was suddenly very aware of every inch of her own body, and every inch of his as he leaned forward. Already perched between her knees, his other hand came to push down on her shoulder, firmly but gently guiding her back onto the bed. As though she could keep her balance anyways. But she allowed him to, and while she panted for breath against his lips, he lowered his weight on top of her and shifted his hips to give himself better access to her.
A very small, faint voice asked her why she was doing this now when she had rejected him so firmly before. Had she just not been brave enough? Had she been scared of him, or of herself? He wasn’t as nice as Four was, but damn if he wasn’t making her tingle between her legs.
Eric’s right hand remained knotted in her hair to hold her in place beneath him, and the other was unyielding as it began to roam her body. First his fingers brushed the edge of her collarbone, the gentle swoop of her neck as it met her shoulder, the outward curve of her breast. He was gentle enough, but Aurora could feel his muscles tensed and coiled as though it were taking some great strength to keep his movements soft. Where his hands led, her skin burned fiery hot in his wake.
He deepened the kiss, eliciting a breathy whimper from Aurora. Without thinking about it, maybe even without meaning to, she reached up to tangle her fingers through his hair. She had to pull away soon, had to breathe, but he didn’t allow her skin to leave his lips. Instead, he did as he had done the morning in his office and nipped at the edge of her jaw, her earlobe, the velvet soft skin of her throat. He wanted to mark her, wanted her to have faint purple bruises in the morning. It was indeed taking a lot of restraint not to draw blood.
“You’re making such sweet little noises,” he breathed. Aurora hadn’t been aware she was making any sound at all, and she felt heat creep up her neck and cheeks. Now wasn’t the time to feel self conscious, but she felt herself trying to draw back into the safe nest of the pillows.
Eric wouldn’t have that though.
When she wriggled upwards towards the top of the bed, he went with her. It was the perfect opening to give him complete and total access to her as her legs widened to shift her body up, and he pressed down hard with his hips.
Aurora gasped at the feeling of him firm against her. He was becoming more rushed as everything intensified tenfold, and the soft grip he had on her body turned increasingly possessive. She could feel his fingertips pressing into her skin, his teeth grazing against her, hips rocking forward into her. Whatever control he was struggling to maintain, it was slipping. When she wrapped her legs around his waist and shifted her hips forward to center him, he groaned with a noise that was almost strangled.
Aurora’s eyes were shut so tight and behind her lids, she was seeing bursts of white hot light. It was all around her just like he was. Her lips felt bruised, but there was a churning burn right there! and she couldn’t stop herself from chasing after it and rolling her hips against him to create more friction. She was using him to increase that deliciously deep sensation that was trailing a path up into her stomach.
“Aurora,” he groaned. It was something like a warning. Barely restraining himself now. But she was getting so much close.
Sucking in breath through her teeth now, Aurora tightened the muscles in her thighs, forcing him still impossibly closer- when she ground her hips this time, he grabbed them roughly and met her halfway with a growl. Sparks felt like they were shooting through her. She was too far gone to stop. The alcohol was allowing her to edge closer than she had ever imagined herself doing before.
God, he had never thought she would do something like this. Fucking using him to get herself off. His fingers weren’t even inside of her, it was just the goddamn friction. He had no qualms with letting her finish, but if she pushed against him one more time, he wouldn’t be able to stop himself. He was lined up perfectly, all he had to do was hike up the hem of her dress, rip her fucking underwear to shreds, and he knew he could have had his buckle undone in seconds. But Eric didn’t want to fuck a drunk girl, especially not if that drunk girl was Aurora. He wanted her to remember every single thing come morning, wanted her to have the sensations of him moving inside her and covering her permanently singed into her skin. No, he couldn’t allow a victory like that to be hampered by whatever the hell she had been drinking. Eric had just enough sense left to marvel at the effects of tequila on the human brain.
Obviously she was too drunk now to even realize what she was doing.
“You have to stop.”
Aurora only tightened her grip on Eric until her nails were digging crescent moons into his forearms. He could see the murky frown marring her focused expression and the way her forehead wrinkled like she wanted to argue against him.
“Aurora if you don’t stop, I’m going to fuck you right here and you’re not going to remember a single bit of it in the morning.” His voice was rough and harsh and she could feel his eyes boring into her.
Slowly but surely, her senses came back to her and he regretfully felt her legs slacken until he could properly pull away. She didn’t open her eyes- couldn’t, or maybe she just wasn’t willing to. Then it was over as suddenly as it had begun.
With ragged breath, Eric cautiously pulled the blankets over her, lingering for the barest second. “Go to sleep now.” His voice was still dark and hoarse.
She sighed and frowned, and Eric couldn’t tell if her lip just quivered or it was the movement of her rolling away from him to face the other side of the room. He realized while rubbing his face with his hands that this was the first time a girl had ever been in his bed and he was actually wanting them to just go to sleep.
As for him, that had just been too damn much. He busied himself with making up the couch in the next room to sleep on and poured himself a drink, but his thoughts kept drifting back to that soft girl in his bed.
She had been like a bird in his hands, so fragile and fluttery, but so fucking willing. When he touched her, he could feel as well as see the way it made her skin flush, could hear the faint hitch of breath in her throat, the way her lids half closed… She had been grinding her hips into him for christ’s sake.
Fuck.
Eric growled at the constant strain in his pants and he needed to get off. He would be up all night imagining if the rest of her tasted as good as her mouth did.
With an exasperated sigh, he checked his watch. The party would still be going on. Who was that girl Aurora had been with? He could probably find her again.
Without so much as a backwards glance into his bedroom, he grabbed his jacket again and locked the door behind him.

It was much more difficult to explain everything that had happened to Jaime and Lyanna than Aurora had anticipated. She had to omit so many details, she almost felt as though she were telling a lie.
The three of them were sitting in their usual spots at their table during lunch. The cafeteria was buzzing around them, people constantly coming and going, and Aurora had to lean in closer to hear them properly.
Lyanna’s eyebrows hadn’t dropped a bit since Aurora told them Eric’s plans for her- the main part of it at least. When Aurora recounted what had happened this morning, minus the kiss of course, their mouths dropped open in surprise. Once the shock was past though, they became concerned. They had both witnessed Eric’s unusually cruel treatment of her during training yesterday.
Lyanna finally went back to picking at her fries, but shook her head.
“Not that I’m not proud of you for doing so well, and not that I don’t think you could do it, but… why you?” She asked around a mouthful of food.
Aurora shrugged rather solemnly without taking offense. “I don’t know. Maybe he thinks after what went down at the chasm, I’m special or something. He didn’t go into a lot of detail about why or how. Just said I was going.” And then hoisted me up onto his desk and kissed me.
Jaime noticed the way Aurora’s ears reddened and her eyes narrowed. “Are you sure you’re okay with it? What are you going to do in the meantime- surely you’ll need a bit of extra training?”
“Yeah that’s already covered.” Aurora absently picked at a roll of bread and the rest of her untouched food. Her friends would think she wasn’t eating because she was nervous, but it was actually because her heart hadn’t stopped racing and her stomach hadn’t stopped knotting since she left Eric’s office- and then worse after her lesson with Four.
“Eric told me instead of training with the rest of the initiates each morning, I have to meet with him at 5 to go over the special stuff I’ll be doing. I think he mentioned I need better practice with a gun. Four gave me a few lessons this morning. That’s why I missed the first bit of training.” She hoped they wouldn’t notice the way her voice faltered around their names.
Lyanna’s head snapped up again. “Four? Why did he do that? Is he going too?”
Aurora kicked herself mentally for letting that one out. She had to stick to as few truths as possible, otherwise they’d want to know more about why on earth Four was paying any attention to her at all. As far as she knew, he didn’t speak to any of the initiates, ever.
She fumbled for a second but covered it up with another shrug and an impassive laugh. “I don’t think he’s going. I guess he just doesn’t want to be held responsible if a brand new initiate ends up with her brains sprayed across the road. Or beat to a pulp. Since they’re accountable for our training and all… Not that I think either of them would be particularly troubled if that did happen.”
They both seemed satisfied by this and returned to their lunch without asking any more questions. Meanwhile Aurora was wondering how the hell she was going to get through the next couple days. Suck it up and deal with it, don’t think about either of them anymore, do what tasks you have to do. Or pack your bags and leave in the middle of the night and take your chances out in the ruins of the city rather than between the two Dauntless leaders.
……………..
The rest of the day went by smoothly, which Aurora was thankful for. After lunch, she and the other initiates played an underground game of capture the flag. Even though Aurora’s team lost, she was thankful to have a few hours to just have fun with her friends and the others. It was nice to not have to take everything so seriously for just a short while.
After dinner, Aurora went with Jaime and Lyanna around the compound. They talked about nothing of any real importance- how Lyanna was doing with Rick. She gushed over him like a puppy. Aurora was happy for her. He seemed nice and she was excited. Jaime was mischievous as always, and told them about how she was in the process of seducing one of the male nurses in the infirmary so she could eventually get access to the good drugs they kept locked away. A real fiend that one was. Even though she didn’t let on, Aurora envied them for having such a simple time here. No death threats, no attempted assassinations, no assault, no potentially dangerous and unwanted interest from the big bad scary leader.
Lyanna found a small clothing and jewelry store she wanted to check out, and dragged her friends in behind her. There wasn’t much to choose from, but there were several dresses that caught Aurora’s eye. One was mid-thigh length and dark gray with black flowers stitched into the skirt. She couldn’t think of a time she would ever wear it though.
Jaime came over to her then and nudged her with an elbow. “Hey, I was thinking. Tomorrow night we should go out again, like a little party before you head out. Since you won’t be back during final initiation, we can celebrate now. How does that sound?”
Aurora laughed out loud at the timing; it was like Jaime read her mind about not having an occasion to wear the dress. She nodded her head, agreeing eagerly. “Sounds great. It’ll be nice to get out for a break again. Except this time!” She spun around and caught Jaime by the elbow. “Don’t let me leave with any gross bartenders!”
……………..
Training with Eric was exactly what Aurora suspected it would be like. Intimidating.
She met him at exactly five o’clock as he had instructed her to, and she followed some distance behind him as he led her up a steep flight of stairs and into a cavernous room with a dingy skylight across the entire ceiling. The sun wasn’t quite rising yet, so the room was dim even with the fluorescent lights that hung on each wall. At the far end, three human-shaped targets leaned against the wall. Each was peppered with indentations from countless rounds of bullets, and there were even some chips in the stone of the walls around them.
“First, target practice. Combat won’t be close range if we can help it, so you need to improve on your shooting,” Eric pulled a heavy black pistol from his belt that Aurora hadn’t noticed before. He inspected it briefly before handing it over to her. She had used a gun a hundred times by now, but the solid weight of it still made her nervous. It took more will than she was proud of to keep her hands from shaking when she took it from him.
“Middle target.” Eric moved back to observe, and Aurora raised her hands obediently. Just as she had done before, she unlocked her elbows, squinted down the sight of the gun, and lined up the small metal head with the head of the middle target. She took a breath, let it out slowly, and pulled the trigger. The sharp recoil made her hands ache, and a cloud of dust sprayed from the rock wall as she missed her target by nearly a foot.
What! Aurora just stared. I didn’t flinch!
“Congratulations, initiate. Keep shooting like that and you’ll be dead.”
Aurora frowned, cocked the gun again to prepare the next round, and lifted her arms again. Again, she lined up the sight and fired, and again she missed. At least this time she hit the target in the arm.
Before Aurora could explain that she wasn’t usually this bad at shooting, Eric snatched the gun out of her hands. She gaped at him and took an instinctive step back.
“What, are you afraid?” Eric’s voice was harsh and condescending. Aurora shook her head, but he misplaced her apprehension. It wasn’t the gun she was nervous about. It was being alone with him again.
“Go stand in front of the target.”
Aurora’s mouth fell open. “What?” She squeaked.
Eric’s nostrils flared impatiently. “Go stand in front of the middle target, initiate.” His hand snapped up to point her forwards and she flinched away from him. If she refused, what would he do?
Probably shoot me right where I stand.
Aurora hesitantly forced her feet to move and did as he commanded. She paused before the target and tried to swallow the panic inside of her. It was surprising that she wasn’t shaking so hard her teeth rattled. When she turned back to meet his gaze, his eyes were piercing. There was a quick flit across his gaze that made Aurora think he was impressed she actually did it and didn’t start crying like she wanted to.
Aurora was surprised to hear herself speak. “So was this your plan all along? If you wanted to kill me, you could have just dragged me into the chasm. Less to clean up that way.”
Eric’s eyes narrowed at her and he smirked without a bit of humor. “I told you before. You’re not special enough for me to make a schedule just to kill you.” With that, he raised the gun to eye level and before Aurora could even think to make a move or a sound, he fired the first round.
The boom was deafening, much louder than it had been when Aurora had been shooting. It echoed off of the walls and reverberated inside of her skull. She was stunned. The hairs on the top of her head fluttered, and when she glanced up she saw a fresh hole in the face of the target barely inches above her.
She glared back at Eric with wide, unbelieving eyes.
“You actually fucking shot at me?!”
Eric’s laugh made her blood boil and her hands clenched into fists at her sides.
“There’s nothing worse that can happen to you than being shot at. If you can stand there without pissing yourself, you can shoot the gun without being afraid of it.” He went to raise his hand as though to fire again, but Aurora wasn’t having it.
“I’m not afraid of the gun you psycho! I couldn’t concentrate because if I drop my guard for even a second you’ll probably pounce on me again! How about you stand in front of the fucking target and we’ll see how well I can shoot.” She was seething by now.
Eric didn’t hesitate to call her bluff. He strode towards her with his jaw firmly set and his eyes burning.
“Alright then initiate. Here,” he grabbed hold of Aurora’s fist and shoved the gun into it, then jerked her arm up and pressed the still-warm barrel right between his eyes.
“Let’s see if you can hit your target this time.”
They both stood there with bared teeth glaring at each other. Aurora imagined herself actually pulling the trigger. His head would implode and his blood would spray against her face. His body would drop like a brick to the floor and she would stand over him like a beast finally bringing their prey to the ground. His hands wouldn’t hurt her again, his voice wouldn’t boom around her like thunder, and he couldn’t threaten her anymore.
But Eric wasn’t stupid. He liked himself too much to actually put his life into the hands of someone he supposedly ‘didn’t give a shit about’. He expected her to call him on his threat because otherwise, she would look like a coward. And Eric knew her well enough to know that she would never cower.
Aurora growled up at him and with a burst of adrenaline that made her head spin, she pulled the trigger.
Click.
She expected at least a small bit of panic to rush through Eric. Maybe his eyes widen in surprise or his face get pale with shock that she actually did it. But there was absolutely nothing in his expression other than the fierce authority that never seemed to leave him. If he was startled or uneasy at all, he didn’t show it a single bit. His breath was not the smallest bit uneven. Aurora hated his constant strict composure. Maybe if he showed even an ounce of humanity once in awhile, she wouldn’t want to smash the butt end of the gun into his face.
Eric smiled triumphantly and took the gun from her again. This time, he loaded it with bullets he pulled from the breast pocket of his vest. Aurora could barely breathe. Did she really just pull the trigger on Eric? Oh god.
“There. Now you’ll hit your target.” His voice was calmer this time, softer. When he pushed the gun into her hand again, she didn’t notice the weight.
Without a word, she crossed the room again and stood behind the white chalk line on the floor. Eric stood away this time, but remained in the peripheral of her vision so she could keep an eye on him while focusing on the decoy. This time there was nothing going through her mind when she raised the pistol. She didn’t have to take a breath to steady herself. When she fired, the bullet embedded itself into the forehead of the target with a satisfying thunk!. Aurora didn’t stop there though. She fired again and again, emptying the clip into target without pausing between. By the time she was out of bullets, the crater in the target’s head was visible from across the room.
She was breathing hard and her hand was numb with the shock of the kicks from the gun. She jumped when Eric’s sudden clapping interrupted the silence and he walked over to her.
“Very good, Aurora. That’s much better,” he loaded up the gun again. “Once you’ve got shooting a stationary target down, we’ll go onto moving ones. No one’s going to stand there and let you shoot them, after all.”
“Except you,” Aurora looked up at him.
Eric shrugged in agreement. “You wouldn’t have shot me if you knew there was a bullet.”
Aurora rolled her eyes and scowled. “What makes you so sure? You’re pretty annoying as far as sadistic narcissists go.”
Eric laughed at that. “Sadistic narcissist? You’re going to have to try a little better than that, babe. I get that one before breakfast.”
Aurora wrinkled her nose at him and turned back towards the target. She shot out each hollow eye and an uneven smile into the fake mouth.
“I don’t know why you’re recruiting me for this mission anyways. Pretty sure it’s not standard procedure to drag initiates into things like that.” She flashed him a withering look.
“Nothing about you is standard, initiate. It’s not every day a girl the size of an elf tosses an assailant into the chasm and then takes a stroll down there herself.” He loaded six more bullets into the gun.
“Sure, but that doesn’t explain the other things. You think I’m tough so you’re making me go. Okay, fine. Then why did you kiss me?” Aurora felt braver on the smart end of the gun and decided she could risk the question. If she didn’t like the response, maybe she would shoot him for real this time.
Eric was silent for a long enough moment to make Aurora glance back at him over her shoulder to make sure he was still paying attention to her.
He played it off as though it were no big deal that only 24 hours ago, he had her in his office and was maybe thirty seconds away from tearing her clothes off. “What can I say? I’m a scoundrel,” he growled the last word. “And besides,” his arms folded across his chest. “I think you liked it.”
Aurora’s mouth fell open at his audacity. She scrambled to defend herself. “I did not!”
Eric lifted one brow incredulously at her as though to say, oh really?
“Well I can do it again if you want. This time I’ll make sure you do.” His eyes sparked and he bit his bottom lip. Aurora nearly dropped the gun onto the floor and choked. As much as he was just taunting her, she knew he would actually do it.
Aurora didn’t know how to respond to that so she started shooting again. This time she went back and forth between all three targets, moving on from one to the next and back again until the barrel was empty. When she was finished, she blew a curl of bright red hair back from her face.
“Just once,” Eric suddenly said. “If you don’t like it, I won’t touch you ever again.”
Aurora stared at him. He wouldn’t leave her alone would he? Why was he so determined about this? What made him think she had the least bit of interest in him?
One step was taken towards her, but she held her ground. “No, Eric.” Her voice was stern and her feet planted. “I don’t want you to.”
Eric’s gaze turned to steel and Aurora could sense how badly he wanted to challenge her resolution. Only a second passed but it felt like a lifetime. The air was charged, and Aurora couldn’t tell if it was with tense hostility or something else.
Finally, finally, Eric shrugged it off and stepped back again. “Fine.”
Aurora let out a breath of relief and felt her shoulders relax. It was a miserable thing to be thankful for, but she was glad if Eric was an asshole, at least he heeded her answer.
Feeling a little better now than that was over, Aurora shook out her tingling hand. “I’m ready for those moving targets now.”

Four made sure Aurora was okay with not stopping for breakfast first, which it was. She didn’t have an appetite and anyways, she didn’t want to see Eric in the cafeteria again. She still hadn’t forgotten the last time Eric had seen her eating breakfast with Four.
Four led her past the gym and into a smaller, more secluded training room. An old, worn mat sat in the center of the floor, and there were a few old weights and beaten punching bags against the far wall.
“This used to be a spare gym for special training. Isn’t used much anymore but it’ll work for this,” Four explained as he nudged a folded mat corner down with his foot to make it even.
Four came to stand in front of her in the center and looked down at her. The friendly companion she’d had before was replaced with professional instructor. She gulped, hoping one-on-one training with him wasn’t a bad idea.
“Right now I want to focus on evading. I’ve seen you spar, you’re fine at initiating an attack. But I want you to learn how to get away when someone has you. You’re small, and your size will always make you a target. People will always go for the one who they think looks weak,” he nudged her shoulder playfully.
Aurora suddenly remembered all the times when she was smaller and her father would come after her. She could usually use his drunkenness against him, dodging around him or straight through his legs while he was off balance. Only a few times had he ever managed to actually catch her, but she was sure Four’s tactic wouldn’t be to grab her hair as she darted by.
Four took a step back. “You’re most likely going to have attackers coming at you from the front. Because you’re small, they don’t feel they need to ambush you from behind. They’ll think they can overpower you easily enough. In most cases, they will be stronger. That’s just a matter of body size. So you have to use that weight against them. You’re used to dodging and getting in a few hits, but I want you to actually go for them.”
He put his hands on his stomach. “So what I’m going to get you to do, is wait until the last second and right when I reach you, shift down so that you’re crouched with the broad of your shoulders facing to me and your head down. That way my momentum is used against me and I’ll flip forwards. Then you’ll have a chance to turn and follow through with me as I fall and stop me on the ground.”
Aurora nodded at his instructions, completely focused now. She braced her legs farther apart and leaned forward into “attack mode”.
Four moved slowly for her, meaning for her to take in every bit of the attack first so she could see exactly how to respond. Right before his hands closed around her, she bent downward, but he stopped her there.
“No, don’t bend with your back. That will just put you off balance. You have to brace with your legs. Here,” he touched her waist with one hand and pushed her shoulders down with another, maneuvering her into the correct position so that she was more crouched than stooped. She tried not to pay any attention to the way his hand lingered just a second too long on the curve of her hip.
“There you go. Try it again.” This time he moved a little more quickly towards her, but she was able to fall into the right position on cue.
Four nodded approvingly. “Good. Now I’m going to actually run at you and I want you to stop me. Remember, I’m a lot heavier than you so you’ll have to really dig your feet in there.”
Aurora set her jaw and took several paces back to give proper distance between them. Four crouched forward and suddenly he looked like a dangerous cat, preparing to pounce. His jaw set and Aurora took a shaky breath. He could get serious very quickly.
Four suddenly burst forward, closing the distance between them in only three strides. He swung upwards with one arm as though to catch Aurora in the face with a punch, and just before he made contact, she sprang into the crouched position with a suck of air, and his body was flipped over her back in an instant as his momentum kept him moving forward.
The impact of his body against hers was just as jarring as he warned it would be, and Aurora nearly lost her balance and fell beneath him as he went over. She wished she’d had this lesson when she had been jumped by Dalton; it would have been handy to send him spiraling into the chasm without having to go down with him.
She felt a shuffle behind her and heard the scuff of Four’s boots against the ground. Suddenly his arms were around her, one barred across her throat and the other snaked across her abdomen so she was wrenched against him. Her mouth fell open and she gasped in surprise.
“Follow through, remember? If they’re not caught totally off guard, they can just tuck and roll like I did and they’ll be back on their feet in an instant. Don’t ever give them your back.” His breath was hot against her ear and she could feel the edge of his jaw against the top of her head. Rather than letting her go when she nodded her understanding of her mistake, his grip tightened. His muscles flexed over her stomach and it got harder to breathe by no fault of his grip.
“How are you going to get loose?” He asked.
“Uhh,” Aurora tried to scramble her thoughts back together, tried to think back through the physical training she had had, but nothing would come to her. Kick backwards? No, he was too close, her leg had no room. Head butt him in the nose? No, he made sure to keep his face from directly behind her. He was good at this.
Oh! Use the same tactic he just showed her, only backwards.
Aurora suddenly doubled forward at the waist, using his grip on her to keep him with her as she rolled her shoulders and forced him forward again. He tumbled a second time but didn’t let go- of course, because he knew exactly what her move would be.
Four grabbed hold of her arm and pulled her down with him and in a blur, she found herself matching him horizontal across the floor. He put his arms around her again, this time the small of her back, arching her against him powerfully.
He smiled and Aurora couldn’t breathe. She was barely four inches from his face, and his eyes were bright. She knew what would happen next- what always happens next. She could still feel Eric’s forceful, intrusive lips against her own, and she didn’t want that to happen again. Her face felt like she was on fire, and she knew her cheeks were probably the same color as her hair. They were both still for a moment, catching their breath.
Aurora frowned. “Um…,” she glanced down awkwardly at her stomach pressed against his own.
“Try to get away.” His voice was thick and low, and the sound of it brushed against Aurora’s nerves. She knew what he was thinking.
Experimentally, she wriggled against him, but his arms remained like iron bars against her spine. The more she moved, the harder his muscles tightened, and she didn’t think it was because he was still trying to test her. She did manage at least to move her legs so that her thighs straddled his hips and she could try to pull away with the leverage- but that proved to be a very poor idea.
She could feel the sharp edges of his hip bones on the insides of her thighs and when she tried to struggle, she created a friction against him that was not unpleasant, but was entirely inappropriate and unexpected. His breath hitched and she halted immediately, frozen, afraid to move.
In a flash of movement that was too fast for Aurora to keep up with, Four suddenly freed himself from beneath her and turned them both with one fluid movement so that she was beneath him. His hips pressed into her again, pinning her and forcing her legs apart. The rough mat scraped against her shoulders, pulled at the loose strands of her hair. She was breathless. Her head was spinning.
Four stared down at her with eyes so dark, they were almost black, and she could feel the deep rise and fall of his chest against her as he tried to reign his own breath under control. She stared back, unmoving.
He lowered himself very slowly, and Aurora got the idea it was so he wouldn’t scare her. He gave her ample time to reject, hesitating just on the fringe in case she wanted to pull her head away. His lips stopped just mere fractions above his own. A question. She was right. She couldn’t let him do that.
She finally found her voice. “Four…”
He stopped then, holding himself over her precariously. She could see the very slight twinge of his jaw, but he didn’t push it.
Aurora was afraid he would be offended, and she rushed to fill the silence with an explanation.
“I just, I don’t think that’s a very good- I think-”
He shifted his weight away, freeing her, but he didn’t scowl or raise his voice at her. In fact, he just smiled reassuringly. She didn’t think it reached his eyes though. She could imagine the sting of rejection if she were in his position.
“Aurora, it’s okay. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have tried to do that.” He rubbed a hand through his hair and took a long breath.
Aurora sat up slowly. Her heart was racing so frantically, it made her chest hurt. Why did this keep happening? What was she doing wrong? Her lip trembled involuntarily and she jerked her head away to keep him from seeing. The last thing she would allow herself to do was to start crying in front of him.
Four rose to his feet a little unsteadily, but reached out a hand to her to help her up. Still not meeting his eyes, Aurora took it and allowed him to haul her to a stand.
The wordless stretch between them was awkward now. She felt her face burning.
“It’s not that I didn’t want to… I like you, I do. It’s just… bad timing.” Aurora rubbed her arms. She did like Four. He made her feel nice; it was easy to be around him. But what happened this morning with Eric…
She shivered.
Four didn’t respond to that, but sighed and looked around as if just now remembering where they were. “I think that’s enough for today. Go get something to eat. You won’t be any use to anyone if you don’t.” His voice wasn’t mean, but it was tense. He couldn’t hide that from her.
Aurora hesitated, but then, so did he. She felt like he wasn’t ready for her to go.
Steeling herself, she finally looked up at his face. His eyes weren’t on her, but instead looking off into the training room. Anywhere but at her. He was too proud to let her see him frowning, and too in control to be the first one out the door.
Without giving it much thought, Aurora reached forward on her toes and stretched up to give him a light kiss on the edge of his mouth, then ducked back before he could turn and react to it. It wasn’t enough, but she hoped it was enough to soothe the burn of her rejection.
She left the room as quickly as she could without going into a flat out run.

Aurora didn’t know what to do. She couldn’t just go back to the dorm where her friends would be waking up soon, not after what happened. She couldn’t bring herself to take an early breakfast either- she wasn’t hungry in the slightest. In fact, her stomach churned in a way that made her feel like she might be sick. The dizziness in her head hadn’t faded even after she was far away from Eric’s office.
Over everything that had happened to her since choosing this faction, the mystery of Eric’s mind was the worst. Why had he put her in his sights in the first place? She had never spoken to him before, never gone against his orders, never sought to undermine his lessons or his directions. She had never made a pass at him and vice versa up until the incidents with Dalton. The thought of him still made her shiver and her scalp prickle.
Aurora at last chose to find her way up onto the roof that marked the only entrance into Dauntless’ fortress of a compound. Another train wasn’t due passed for several hours yet so she knew that would be the only place she could go where she could be totally alone.
Outside, the early morning sky was streaked with gold and pink and the sun wasn’t quite peeked over the distant outlines of tall buildings. She inched carefully towards the edge of the roof and took a seat perched on the upraised concrete. Looking down was very different up here than it was for the chasm. Here, she could see the vague shapes of what lay at the bottom, including the cracked sidewalk and crumbled bricks from the old buildings. The height was less intimidating when she could see what lay before her rather than imagining what was in the darkness.
A chill breeze ruffled Aurora’s hair and she shivered, remembering every single touch, every inch, every breath from the Dauntless leader. The way his rough hands grabbed at her, the heat of his palms burning into her skin. The way he was everywhere all at once, and how he had such strong, wild reactions to even her smallest movements and noises. Her collarbone still stung from the pinch of his teeth.
That look in his eyes that both chilled and warmed her blood at the same time. How was it possible to be so afraid of someone she hadn’t even known a few months ago? Suddenly he had this possessive claim over her- was telling her who she couldn’t train with or talk to.
The thought of going on a mission, no matter how short, with Eric made her heart drop sickeningly in her chest. Going to fight with a group of Factionless rebels? Aurora has never even been in actual combat yet. The only experience she had were the spars inside the ring and the two fights she had been in outside of it- one of which did not end so well.
Aurora’s head fell into her hands and she groaned miserably. She felt very alone in a place that was always crowded. She couldn’t tell Jaime or Lyanna about it. They wouldn’t understand. Far too much had happened that Aurora couldn’t hope to fill them in on all of it now.
A thought flitted across her mind to seek out Four. After all, he had told her if she ever needed help, she could go to him. He was the only person she knew that hadn’t made her feel like a child yet.
The memory of Eric’s stern face and harsh voice echoed instantly in her head; ‘I don’t want you hanging around Four anymore…’
Aurora shied away from it immediately. He might be able to decide whether or not she failed her initiation, but he had no right to dictate who she spoke to or called her friend. Even Aurora’s father, who haunted her childhood for years, had never kept her from certain friends or family. And he was the lowest of the low in terms of crazy men.
With a grim frown, Aurora’s mind was set and she scrambled up from the ledge of the roof. At the very least, maybe Four could tell her a bit more about this mission. A small hope flickered inside of her; maybe he could do something to get her off of it. He was as much a leader as Eric was after all. If Four recruited her for other work, surely Eric would have to give in, otherwise reveal whatever twisted plans he had for her.
When Aurora made it back down into Dauntless, she was startled to find that there was already someone down there across the room from the net she jumped into.
“Four?” Her throat was dry from the cold morning air outside and her voice was too high to be considered anything but panicked.
In the poorly lit room, he was only a tall silhouette with lean shoulders, but when he stepped closer Aurora could see him better. He had a slight look of concern on his face.
“I saw you go up onto the roof,” he jerked his chin up towards the massive hole above them that opened up into the world above. “For a second I thought maybe you were leaving…” his voice trailed off and she could feel his eyes narrowing on her, gauging her.
Aurora forced a self conscious “ha” before attempting to climb awkwardly out of the net. She was surprised again when Four pulled down the thick ropes to help her, and the shift in balance sent her nearly tumbling right down into him. As luck- or lack thereof- would have it, she came to an abrupt halt just inches from his face.
At such close range, she could see the faint gold in the center of his eyes, and the very faint, nearly nonexistent freckles on his cheek bones. He smiled at her, but it was nothing more than just a slight upward curve of his mouth- don’t look at his mouth! The last thing she needed or wanted was an awkward encounter with the second Dauntless leader as well. She was still reeling from the first.
“Nah, just went up there for some peace and quiet,” she managed to squeak. He’s just being nice.
With more careful focus than she thought possible, she took his hand and allowed him to help lower her back down to the safety of the solid concrete floor.
“You have to have a death wish. Hanging out above chasms and buildings? I don’t know if that’s crazy or cool.” He shook his head.
“Both, I think,” she rubbed the back of her neck self consciously.
Four laughed a little. “Well if I’m ever trapped on top of a skyscraper, I would definitely want you on my team.” He meant it as a joke, but it only reminded Aurora of her problem and the reasons she wanted to find him in the first place. She stopped walking suddenly and he turned back to face her, brows knitting together.
“You alright?”
Aurora took a breath to steady her voice. “Um, actually, I was on my way back to find you. To talk to you about something.” She looked down at her feet, and at this he came to stand in front of her.
“This morning Eric told me about this mission he’s going on- in three days I think. He told me I’ll be coming with him on it, but- but I’m not really sure what to do. I- he- we, um-,” she wasn’t sure how much to tell Four. Should she tell him about the arguments, the way the meeting had ended? Would he understand? Or would he think she really was just a foolish little initiate after all?
Whatever it was she was having trouble coming out with, Four seemed to sense it. He reached out a comforting hand to steady her, and when she looked up he was watching her carefully, but there was none of the judgment in his eyes that Eric was known for.
“You don’t need to be scared of Eric, Aurora. He can’t hurt you no matter how much he makes you think that he can. You’re a lot tougher than you look. I think I know about the mission you’re talking about- the one with the Factionless?”
Aurora bit her lip to stop it from quivering and nodded.
“If it’s the mission you’re worried about, don’t be. 9 times out of 10, nothing comes of it. They just check out the disturbance and make the Factionless leave, and they scatter like ants. If anything ever happens, it’s nothing more than maybe some talk. But if it’s Eric you’re worried about…,” his voice hardened almost imperceptibly at this, and Aurora felt her face turning pink.
Four felt her uneasiness and he stepped forward to wrap her up in a hug. As unexpected as it was, Aurora took the bit of comfort willingly. His chest was warm against her flushed skin and his scent was soothing. When he spoke again, she could feel the rumble of his voice against her ear.
“Eric likes to intimidate people, likes to make them think they have no control. But you do,” he pulled away slightly and brought one hand up to Aurora’s chin to tilt her face up towards him, forcing her to make eye contact. His touch was not at all similar to the harsh, demanding grip of Eric. She found herself not minding the proximity. When her breath faltered in her lungs this time, it was not because of fear.
“You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do. Okay?” His words were soft and gentle, but hard enough to convey their weight.
Aurora nodded, not trusting herself to speak. She wasn’t sure if she really believed what Four was saying, but it was nice at least to have a fake mask of confidence, no matter how thin it was.
He let go of her chin and rubbed the small of her back soothingly. The touch was not at all invasive. She was surprised that she didn’t mind, and moreso that she wanted him to continue to comfort her.
Isn’t twice in one morning a little much? The sudden voice in the back of her mind made a blush creep up her neck. She looked down so he wouldn’t notice, but he must have misinterpreted it as shutting down.
“You don’t need to be afraid of me either. Actually, I’m the one that she be scared of you,” his voice was light and warm again, back to the gentle support.
Aurora couldn’t help but laugh at this. “Me? Why? I literally barely reach your chest,” she thumped her forehead against his breastbone to prove her point, and he started chuckling. They separated then and he turned to lead the way back into the hall.
“I know better than to let my guard down around someone who hangs out around chasms after falling in one.”
“Yeah you’re right, I could probably beat your ass,” Aurora snorted.
Four laughed. “You want to give it a try?” Calling her bluff.
Aurora side eyed him mischievously and swiped out at him with her first, meaning to punch him playfully in the shoulder, but her hand connected with nothing at all as he smoothly darted out of the way. Clearly he had been expecting it.
Aurora’s mouth fell open and she meant to fake shock but she couldn’t quite stifle her giggle as she fumbled. “How can someone so big be that fast!”
Four returned the grin and shrugged. “Yeah I get asked that from time to time.”
Aurora shook her head, “That’s not always something to be proud of, Four. I really hope that’s not how you got your name.”
“Nope, I can do a little bit better than that,” he looked down at her with mirth and fell back into step with her.
They shuffled down the corridor in a silence that was not uneasy. Aurora was slowly feeling the weight of what had happened this morning lightening up a bit, but she didn’t delve too deep into her thoughts. She knew if she allowed herself to go over it all again, the panic would return.
Four broke into her thoughts after a few minutes. “I’ll spar with you a bit though, if you want. Show you some things that might make you feel a bit better when you head out.” It took Aurora a second to realize he was going back to their previous conversation. Her eyebrows raised; she thought he had been joking.
“Oh, uh, sure. That’s really nice of you.” She thought maybe he meant to give her a quick lesson perhaps after dinner.
“Good. It can count for this morning’s training.”
I was gone for a long time 😱
I totally lost my writing mojo for a while. I know I dropped everything really suddenly. But would any of you be interested in me continuing with the fic I started?

Amity was a very different place compared to Dauntless. The longer Aurora spent away from it, the more it felt like a different planet altogether or like it never really existed at all.
In Amity, loyalty was given freely and not bought. Affection was a natural part of life, like growing taller or losing your first tooth. It was easy to laugh and talk with strangers. Abnegation may have been the leading role in selflessness, but anything Amity did, it did out of love. Summers were filled with crackling fires, cheery folk songs, and flower crowns made out of wild daisies.
At night, when Aurora couldn’t sleep, she could crawl out of bed and pad barefoot down the walk outside of her small cabin to see the stars open up above her. Crickets trilled softly in the grass, and the whispers of the breeze against the tree leaves was a gentle song that always helped to lull her to sleep. She thought she heard a very distant howl once that she swore sounded like the cry of a child, but her father had told her that it was nothing, just her imagination, go back to sleep.
There were, however, similarities between the two factions as well.
The bravery that she sucked in through her teeth and filled her chest with had not changed. It still twisted in her gut and replaced the blood in her veins with wildfire. The way her heart pounded then skipped was still the same, and the way she had to stop her voice from shaking when she stood up for herself.
The sensation of a punch when hard knuckles met the curve of her jaw still felt the same as well. That moment of blind numbness where her senses were scattered and she didn’t quite know what had happened until the sharp ache of pain punched right through the fog cloud, and afterwards her jaw was stiff and hard to move. Sometimes her lip was split and she tasted coppery blood where the edge of her teeth had cut into the flesh of her mouth.
The first time she had ever been punched, she was five years old.
When she tried to think back to that time, she couldn’t recall what she had done to deserve it. She couldn’t remember where it had happened, inside her house or in the barn. She didn’t remember what she was wearing or where her brother had been or what time of day it was.
She things she did remember were still fresh in her mind, years later. The crashing sound of her father storming down the hall towards her. The wooden floorboards had shaken and Aurora had covered her ears with her hands because she thought maybe she would go deaf. The way the door frame splintered when her father kicked it in, and Aurora practically jumped out of her skin. The feral, unhinged anger that flashed through his dark eyes and the way he roared so loud, he spat. The words he said were jumbled with rage, and Aurora never caught exactly what it was that he screamed at her.
She remembered being pulled up so violently by the collar of her shirt, her head snapped back and her neck was sore for days afterwards. He had hit her so suddenly, she never saw his fist coming and couldn’t pinpoint the exact moment when his sharp knuckles made contact with her soft, round face. In fact, she wasn’t even sure what had happened at first. She had never been hit before. She had never been struck by anything at all, ever. Stars had leapt into her vision and she blinked in a total daze. At some point, her father had released her, because suddenly she was lying on the floor, but her legs wouldn’t work.
Panting with anger, her father had taken a step back and spat once at his own feet before wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. It wasn’t the realization of what he had done that erased the fury from his face. It wasn’t the fact that he had just lashed out at his own child. It was the fact that Aurora did not cry out. It had happened so fast, maybe she simply didn’t have time to. But even when she grabbed her face and her skin turned bright red and began to swell, her vivid green eyes remained unclouded by tears. Any child would feel betrayed when their guardian hurt them, and even if Aurora didn’t understand why her father struck her, she didn’t seek comfort. Not from him, not from her brother, not from anyone anywhere in Amity. No one would ever know.
With his steam all used up, he had turned and stomped heavily back down the hall, leaving Aurora behind to pick herself up off the ground.
That was the first time Aurora had ever been punched.
………………..
Aurora wasn’t sure whether or not she should obey what Eric said to her.
Every morning, five o’ clock.
She told herself not to listen, that he didn’t actually mean that now he required her to meet him before training started. But she had enough doubt in her head to feel uneasy when she considered just staying in bed. She knew that if she disobeyed him, a direct order, that he could punish her any way he pleased. Maybe next time she would not survive a fall into the chasm.
So it was fear that caused Aurora to shiver and quietly climb out of bed in the dark. Her stomach was twisting with apprehension and she had no idea what to expect from the Dauntless Leader. Half of her hoped that she would be stopped by someone on her way to the gym, maybe someone who would give her a different order or demand for her to go back to the dorm. The other half of her prayed he wouldn't be there. She would have rather been the butt of a joke- she could tolerate being laughed at for being so gullible.
But those prayers did no good at all, because Eric was waiting patiently at the wide entrance to the gym, leaning with one foot propped against the wall. When he looked up and saw Aurora bathed in the half light, he had enough grace to be pleasantly surprised for a moment before he donned the cold, hard mask that Aurora was used to.
“I didn't think you'd show up,” he said as he pushed off the wall and came to stand in front of her. Aurora passively noticed that he smelled too good to be so mean; freshly showered and dabbed with a cologne that reminded her vaguely of herbs and spices and a sweetness that she couldn't place. When he spoke, she could smell the faint smoke of cigarettes on his breath.
“I didn't think I had a choice,” she said curtly, rubbing her arms a little self consciously. It was difficult to look him in the eyes.
He smirked. “You didn't.”
Aurora chewed her lip and looked around. There was no equipment set out in the gym and she hoped he wouldn't make her run again. Her legs still ached terribly from yesterday.
“So what are we doing? Why do I have to train with you? I'm not failing.”
Eric nodded and wrapped an arm around Aurora’s waist. Her breath froze and she looked up at him anxiously as though it might be a trap. His hand was barely touching her, was not hurting her at all, but she had enough sense to be weary of everything he did. A lion hiding in plain sight.
“It's not for your initiation,” he confided, and Aurora couldn't make sense of it. “I'm taking you somewhere.” With the arm that was wrapped around her, he guided Aurora away from the gym and down a hall she had never been to before. The hair prickled on the back of her neck and she tried to keep her feet coordinated even though a steady trickle of fear was beginning to unsettle her.
“Where are you taking me?” She asked nervously, trying to memorize the turns they were taking in case she needed to get away. A deer planning for an escape route.
She felt his rumbling chuckle in her chest. “You can stop worrying, Aurora. If I wanted to hurt you, I could have done it a hundred times already- no offense, but you're not special enough for me to wake up at four in the morning just to off you.”
She knew it was meant to make her feel more at ease, but it only stirred up a new cocktail of uncertainty. But if Eric was anything, she didn't think he was a liar… Well, at least not in this case.
Aurora allowed him to lead her through twisting corridors and then up steep, uneven steps. Her feet stumbled once on the top of the stairs, but Eric caught her before she could fall. He didn't laugh at her clumsiness or give away any sign that it bothered him at all, as she would have thought he would. Aurora, however, could barely hear over the pounding of her heart.
Eric rounded a corner and Aurora was faced with a setting she had never seen before, especially not in Dauntless.
The spacious room was surprisingly well lit and clean, with barely a single smudge on the shining dark tile floor. There was a long desk situated to the left where a computer monitor sat idle. It looked like the kind of place where one would find a secretary answering phone call after phone call and bustling around to take her boss’ orders.
To her right, there was a row of chairs against the wall that didn't look very comfortable. Then again, this place probably wasn't meant to be. ‘Principal’s office’ came to mind.
Directly opposite from where Aurora stood, there was a door with a window blocked by blinds. It looked so strange in a compound where most entrances were only rectangular cutouts in the ancient rock. But she supposed this was the most private setting she had seen since transferring here.
She looked to Eric for an answer, but he only pushed her forward.
Eric led her directly to the door, that he swiftly unlocked and swung open. Aurora wasn't sure what to expect, but it was not this…
It was an office similar to the lobby outside, with matching floors and limited decor. The desk was very similar to the one that Aurora had seen when Four patched up her hands, only newer and better taken care of. There were various folders and papers strewn all over it, and a flatscreen monitor in hibernation mode.
In front of the desk, were two leather chairs that were of matching condition. The legs of the chairs were scuffed, probably from being moved across the hard floor.
There was also a small fridge, a filing cabinet, an intercom speaker on the wall, and a bare coat rack in the corner.
“Is this… your office?” Aurora asked, the words feeling peculiar coming from her mouth.
“Whose office would it be, if not mine?” Eric closed the door behind them and Aurora startled when she heard him slide the lock. He saw the look in her eyes and removed his arm from her waist.
“What did I tell you, Aurora?” He reminded her roughly and strode across the room towards the desk. He turned expectantly back to her and rolled his eyes with impatience. “Do I need to pull you over here like a child?”
Aurora forced her feet to move and she looked around awkwardly, not sure whether to sit or stand or lay on the floor. Her mind was trying to work through the possible reasons for her being summoned here, with him, so early in the morning, but she was drawing blanks. She didn’t understand why any of this was necessary.
“Sit,” he commanded. Aurora didn't hesitate to drop herself into the closest seat at the very edge. Her back was rigid with tension and she didn't remove her eyes from Eric. She probably looked exactly like a kid preparing themselves to be scorned by a teacher for acting up in class… Only it wasn’t detention she was nervous about.
He turned to face her and hoisted himself up to sit on the desk. His heavy boots thumped against the wood with a hollow thud. Aurora found it strange that he didn't just sit in the twin chair beside her or behind the desk. This was obviously his office. It smelled just like him. It was also barren, just like his emotional spectrum. Bleak.
“I didn't single you out for some spiteful game. I'm not training you to make you better for your initiation. I’m not stupid, Aurora, I already know you’ll pass it.”
Aurora could only stare at him as his words slowly registered in her brain. She had a bad habit of trying to guess what the outcome would be before it happened, and she supposed that would do her no good now. She didn’t know where all of this was coming from.
“You won't be going through your initiation with the other transfers. You're going to accompany me on a little mission that has been in the works for some weeks now. If you do well, you not only pass, but you'll get to choose whatever job you want when it's all finished.” This version of Eric was strictly businesslike, like he were brokering a deal.
Aurora didn’t answer at first. She did nothing other than stare at him with her confused green eyes. When she continued her silence without any sort of response, he thrummed his fingers against the desk impatiently.
Eric sighed and hopped down. He pulled Aurora up by her hands and brought her forward to look at the documents stacked all over the place, as though that would straighten everything out in her head.
“Look,” he said, pointing to the paper on top. Her eyes skimmed over the neatly typed passages, but only a few words could settle in her spiraling mind.
Factionless… Unauthorized weapons… Surveillance… Unrest…
“For the past few months, groups of Factionless have been gathering just outside the city. Small units have been able to scatter them pretty easily until now. It's the makings of a revolt, and somehow they've managed to get their hands on Dauntless weapons and ammunition… So we need to break up the entire operation before they begin making too much noise.” His finger traced over the document as he spoke, navigating Aurora’s gaze across the pages.
This was too much information all at once. When she woke up this morning, she didn't know if she would be back in the hospital or if she was the victim of a cruel joke. The chance of being Factionless by the end of the week had been very real.
Now the man she feared the most was recruiting her for a mission she had no idea existed- or even had a purpose for existing.
Aurora backed away and ran her fingers through her hair, trying to give herself a moment to sort through all the information.
Eric watched her closely, reading every emotion as it flitted across her face.
“Why do you want me in on this? Choose someone else. You literally have an entire faction to choose from. I just don't get it,” she finally admitted with a shake of her head. “You're so confusing. I don't get you. One moment you hate me, the next you're trying to team up with me? You don't make any damn sense, Eric.” His name scraped more harshly out of her mouth than she intended it to.
His eyes narrowed fractionally and the deep blue color of them darkened.
Uh oh. Aurora knew that look. He was offended.
“You should know by now that I get what I want, Aurora. And I want you on this mission.” His voice was low and thick and the ghost of a smile turned the corner of his lips upwards. “You want me to show you how much I want it?”
Aurora totally blanked. Her pulse quickened and suddenly the air was getting heavy again.
“W-what?” This had to be a dream.
Eric turned on her so quickly, she had no time at all to react. One moment he was just standing there, and the next he was grabbing her and spinning her around and pinning her with his full weight so that she was forced back against the desk with a startled yelp. Her mouth opened reflexively in surprise, and he took complete advantage of it. His tongue traced her bottom lip before catching it with his teeth and pulling it to force her open wider. Her breath hitched and he could taste the surprise on her.
Unlike the first time that Eric kissed her, this time was not clouded by alcohol. There was no whiskey to make him clumsy, nor to make her slow. His nerve endings were not dulled by the sluggish drink, and he could feel every single inch of her pressed against his body. So fragile, so easy to move, so tempting.
His hands planted firmly on the desk at Aurora’s sides, gripping the polished edge until his knuckles were white, and blocking off every possible route of escape for the short redheaded girl from Amity. He crushed her against him with his hips, forcing her ass up onto the table where she was eye level and he could deepen the kiss. Her body hadn't quite caught up to his own yet, and he growled low in the back of his throat with unrestrained fervor. Without moving his hands, he pressed into her and roughly forced her knees apart. Though she was scarcely meeting him halfway, she did not try to free herself as she had with Evan the night Eric found her outside the club. She was tense with inexperience, but her mouth was willing and she gradually conformed to his touch as though fitting herself to him.
Her legs were so dainty and she was so small compared to him, she could barely wrap her thighs around his waist.
When Aurora began to gasp for air, Eric broke away from the kiss, dragging his lips to the corner of her mouth, the edge of her jaw, the sensitive skin just below her ear, and down the elegant swoop of her neck. The sound of her panting for breath, her chest fluttering beneath him, her face blushing rosy pink, back arching as her pulse raced… It was enough to drive him wild in a way that he thought no Amity girl ever could.
He had to touch her. He had to feel her.
He grabbed the backs of her thighs and roughly pulled her into him, lifting her up off of the table. He hissed through his teeth when she was ground against the erection that was straining against his pants. She whimpered when she felt the size of him against her, separated by far too much fabric that he desperately wanted to rip away. Finally, finally, he felt her arms wrap around his neck, and he smiled darkly into the curve of her throat.
He traced a path from one shoulder to the other, using his tongue to soothe the flesh that he nipped. He hoped he left bruises, hoped that he would create a trail of where his mouth had been and when she touched those bruises with her fingertips later on, she would remember the feeling of his mouth hot against her skin.. She tasted so sweet, so warm, so fucking delicious.
Aurora curled her fingers into his hair. Whether it was subconscious or intentional, she used this leverage to increase the friction of him between her thighs. He groaned hoarsely in approval, and responded by grinding himself into her so hard that she moaned. The passionate, breathy sound of it shot an electric tremor straight through him, spurring him on and sending him into a frenzy.
He wanted to tear her clothes off, wanted to hold her so hard and so tight that the prints of his fingers would be permanently marked on her body. But if he didn't stop right now, he wasn't going to be able to keep himself from throwing her down onto the floor and having his way with her in every possible way, and he doubted she had ever been fucked before. And god he wanted to fuck her so hard.
Eric reluctantly pulled back just enough to look at her while still keeping himself between her legs. Her eyes were bright and unfocused, pupils dilated until her irises were only thin green rings. His breath fanned her face, blowing loose strands of hair that whisped behind her ears. Her lips were already swollen, delicate bruises springing to life down the column of her throat.
As fast as his heart was beating, hers was thrumming ten times faster.
“Do you want to stop?” He breathed, hoping the answer would be no. If she didn't want this, he wouldn't force her, but the thought of being inside of her was enough to drive him crazy and goddamn he was so fucking hard.
Aurora hesitated for a fraction of a second while she caught her breath. She didn't release him, didn't try to push him away, didn't try to squirm off of the desk. But he saw the uncertainty pool in her eyes and he knew she wasn't ready. It was almost as though she realized what was happening for the first time.
The excited glimmer in her eyes faded into confusion, and then doubt, and then she was pushing him away. She put her hand on his chest and pushed weakly, with hardly more strength than a baby bird. But Eric backed off when she wanted him to, even though he had to grit his teeth to move his feet. His initial reaction was to be angry at the rejection, and he caught himself wanting to tell her to get out then, but no predator ever caught their prey by jumping right in. He was a lion, and lions waited.
With a deep breath, Eric gave her space to clumsily slide off the desk. Her face was flushed and there were obvious bite marks dusting across her collarbone, but he didn't point them out to her. Instead, he ran a hand through his short hair, trying to compose himself. It was too early in the morning to be that turned on only to be turned off again. Fuck.
Aurora didn't- or couldn't- look at him. Only at the floor.
“Um… I-I need to go now,” she stammered, then suddenly seemed to realize who she was talking to. “Er, p-please sir. If that's all…”
“Go on then.” He growled it out without meaning for it to be quite so sharp. She recoiled at it though as if he had reached out and physically slapped her. But before he could correct himself, she was lurching forward towards the door as though she might be sick.
“Aurora!” Eric shouted over his shoulder. He knew she heard him because of the falter in her step, though she didn't pause. “We leave in three days. You won't be training with the other initiates. I still have to go over protocol with you and you still need to learn how to shoot properly.” Back to business, as usual, going over lists and priorities in his head. His chest was still heaving but he reigned himself in easily.
Aurora slammed the door behind her and Eric was left in the silence of his office. That is, before the phone began to ring.

Both Lyanna and Jaime barely made it on time for their training class. Aurora was sitting on the floor in the corner of the gym stretching her legs when they both walked in and joined her. Judging by the looks of them, they probably had about the same amount of sleep as Aurora did, or less… Jaime was still wearing the same outfit as she had to the club the night before, and her eyes were squinted and her face drawn tensely. Aurora guessed she was probably suffering through an awful hangover. Lyanna had at least managed to change clothes, but she had pulled her hair back into a sloppy bun, and Aurora noticed that the jacket she was wearing didn’t belong to her. It was several sizes too large, and Lyanna was practically swimming in it.
“Long night huh?” She quipped when they began bending at the waist to touch their fingertips to their toes.
Jaime grimaced. “You could say that. Don’t remember half of it. Guess I had fun though, because look-” she turned around and lowered her jeans just enough to expose the back of her hip. Aurora snorted when she saw an angry-looking black bird inked into Jaime’s smooth skin. It was still red with irritation, and swelling.
“That is the most condescending bird I’ve ever seen in my life,” Aurora could barely contain her laughter. Jaime shook her head in mock disappointment with herself and pulled her pants back up.
Aurora looked at Lyanna, still sniggering. “What about you, huh? Any horrible permanent regrets?” Lyanna’s face immediately began glowing in that ‘I just had the night of my life’ expression that her friends had come to know so well. “No regrets here!” She sang in a bubbly voice, pushing up the baggy sleeves of her jacket so she could grab her feet properly. “You know that guy that was checking me out at the club? His name is Ricky. He’s a guard up there around the Leaders’ offices. Let’s just say, he patrolled a few things last night.” Lyanna had to cover her hand over her mouth to stop from bursting out loud.
They both turned to Aurora then with an excited glimmer in their eyes, “What about you, you sexy little temptress? I saw you leave with that bartender,” Lyanna winked, but the smile on her face disappeared when Aurora hesitated.
“Eh, he wasn’t so great. He was a sleazebag.” Aurora dismissed it with a wave of her hand and focused on twisting her torso from side to side until her back crackled. Jaime and Lyanna both frowned, but understood that it wasn’t the right time to probe for more information.
Aurora smiled though, letting them know she didn’t feel as bad as they feared she did. “No worries though.” She wanted to tell them about what happened with Eric, but realized that would have opened up an entirely new map of questions, ones that should have been answered days ago. They would have been upset if they found out Aurora had drunkenly kissed the Dauntless Leader and never told them… But not as upset as hearing that he had yelled in her face. Aurora considered telling them about her morning with Four as well, but someone walked loudly into the room before she got a chance.
“Alright, initiates, listen up!” Aurora’s head snapped up and the sound of Eric’s domineeringly loud voice made her heart sink. “I have no doubts that you’ve all probably been slacking off the past week in my absence. But rest assured, I’m back now and today is going to make up for every single lesson that I did not oversee.” He stood with his hands held stiffly behind his back, cold grey eyes sweeping over the room. Aurora fully expected him to lock her into one of his notorious death glares, but he didn’t even look at her at all. She knew he could see her though. Her fiery red hair was impossible to miss. He was ignoring her on purpose.
A collective groan filled the room, but Eric ignored that too.
“To start off, I want you all running laps. No breaks, no walks. Whoever falls behind or stops running is going to be cut from the ranking and will be on the streets by the end of the night.” The initiates gasped and Aurora’s eyes bugged wide with shock. Surely he had to be joking. He seemed like the type to find humor in such twisted threats. But it was obvious by the flare of his nostrils and the tightness in his jaw that he was far from joking.
“Can he even do that?” Lyanna whispered skeptically. Aurora could only shake her head with disbelief.
“Now, initiates!” Eric snapped and everyone jumped to their feet, taking off in one large group towards the track that circled around the massive room. Aurora was already dreading it before she was even halfway through the first loop; she had absolutely no energy to spare for this, and she couldn’t help regretting choosing to stay awake and warm up instead of laying down for as long as she could. Hanging out with Four didn’t outshine a few more hours of rest.
Jaime was struggling to keep up. Aurora could only imagine how shitty her best friend felt after a night of such heavy drinking. Eric stood at the center of the room, watching each initiate for any flaws or if they weren’t running as fast as he wanted them to.
Without warning, he looked straight at Aurora, “Initiate! Why are you running so slow? Got something else you’d rather be doing?”
Aurora didn’t even know what to say. The blood immediately rushed to color her neck and face scarlet, and those running behind her glanced back at her over their shoulder. She kicked her legs faster, but it only made her more tired.
Only a few minutes passed before Eric spoke up again. “Initiate!” Again, it was directed at Aurora. “Why are your legs so stiff? Have a long night?”
Are you fucking kidding me?! Aurora’s mouth fell open and she gave him the angriest glower that she could possibly muster. He looked so smug, he didn’t even try to hide it.
“Someone is in an especially sour mood today,” Lyanna huffed as Aurora ducked her head down and only stared at the track beneath her feet. A million things were racing through her head but all she could think was, Why is he doing this? Fortunately, she managed to keep up in the middle of the group.
On the fifteenth lap around the room, everyone was beginning to pant and Aurora was sucking air in through her teeth. The delicate chill of the underground gym was making her lungs feel like they were on fire.
Eric finally seemed satisfied, “Enough! Stop running.” The initiates wasted no time planting their feet firmly onto the ground and Aurora had to stop herself from resting her hands on her knees and heaving for breath. A light sweat was beading on the nape of her neck.
Before everyone had caught their breath, Eric approached them from the other side of the room. The glimmer in his eyes was sinisterly amused. Everyone was weary of what he would do next. He allowed himself to scrutinize every single person before turning once more to Aurora.
She felt sick when he looked at her.
“I’m not done with you yet,” he told her darkly. “Run four more laps.”
Aurora only stared at him with astonishment. This was personal. Was he still angry about what she said to him last night? Because it was docile compared to what he had growled in her face. She was drunk, she couldn’t even figure out why things had gone down the way they did. Was he psycho?!
With bitterness all over her face, Aurora drew in a long, shaking breath and set off alone down the track while everyone else watched in silence. Despite her exhaustion, she willed herself to remain standing straight and keeping her shoulders back, head held high in defiance. He was not going to win.
When she finished, Eric simply turned away from her. Aurora knew he wasn’t completely content, but she was relieved that at least for now he wasn’t shouting at her. She didn’t dare to rejoin the group, instead choosing to linger towards the back, out of his direct path. She was safer that way.
Eric instructed each of them to find a partner and start practicing their high kicks. Aurora chose Jaime because they each had equal amounts of energy- that is, none- and it wouldn’t be so hard to keep up with her. Jaime started kicking first while Aurora held her hands up at face level to give Jaime a target. Given Aurora’s less-than-intimidating stature, Jaime didn’t have to work very hard to meet the goal.
It was ten kicks, and then they rotated so that it was Aurora’s turn. Jaime was at least five inches taller than she was, so Aurora practically had to jump to reach Jaime’s hands. It was almost comical, like a dog leaping up to get a treat that was hopelessly out of reach.
On her tenth kick, Aurora went to trade places with Jaime, but a booming voice stopped her.
“I don’t think so,” Eric sneered. “Do four more rounds.”
“Forty?!” Aurora blurted on reflex. She instantly regretted it. Eric’s eyes flashed and he came to stand directly in front of her. She had to bend her head back just to look at him. There was a seething danger there, and it was hard for Aurora to swallow.
“Is that a problem, initiate?” He was daring her. Would she stand her ground? That small voice was back in her mind, warning her not to do or say something she couldn’t take back.
“No sir,” she growled back at him, maintaining his glare with one of her own. His eyes narrowed fractionally but Aurora knew he was too good at keeping his composure to turn this into a scene. The entire room was deadly quiet while the other initiates held their breath in anticipation.
“Good. Now do four more rounds.”
Aurora turned unwillingly back to Jaime, who grimaced sympathetically at her. Eric remained standing right next to them, refusing to give them space or back away. Aurora barely made it to forty kicks. Her thighs were screaming with pain and her rear end cramped so bad, just the act of standing still was excruciating. She felt as though her legs were being stabbed. She wanted so badly to stand up to him but knew it would only make things worse for herself, so she bit her tongue.
“What’s going on, Aurora? Did something happen between you two?” Jaime whispered when Eric turned his attention elsewhere.
“No… I don’t know why he’s being like this,” but Aurora’s voice wasn’t convincing and Jaime didn’t buy it. She chose not to pursue it though.
The rest of training was grueling. Eric still didn’t let up, though Aurora wasn’t the only one he began calling out. It seemed that whatever had him in such a sour mood, it was only getting worse. No one was immune to his temper. Aurora was ashamed that each time those eyes locked onto someone else, she was thankful that it wasn’t her.
They weren’t allowed to break for lunch today. Eric demanded that they train all the way through the day, insisting that they needed to make up for whatever Four had them doing in his absence. He said their physical initiation test was coming up and no initiate would fail if he could help it. He demanded perfection with an iron fist, and for the first time, Aurora was doubting herself.
Eric finally ordered for them to stop and clean up for dinner, Aurora breathed an audible sigh of relief. The tension was so thick, she felt like it might suffocate her. She could feel Eric’s eyes on her back as she tried to file unnoticed out of the room with Jaime and Lyanna, but she was not so lucky.
“Aurora.” It was a single quick jab, like the flick of a wrist at the end of a punch. Aurora froze in her steps and with her back still turned to him, took a deep breath. She didn’t want to face him. She didn’t want to talk to him. She wanted to pretend she hadn’t heard and sprint for the dorm.
Jaime and Lyanna hesitated as they looked back and forth from Aurora to Eric. They wanted to do something, to help in some way, but they were useless.
Aurora tried to pull on a smile, but they could tell that it was entirely fake. “It’s fine guys, I’ll catch up with you later. Save me a seat okay?” Jaime nodded and reluctantly exited, looking back uncertainly until she was out of sight.
Aurora forced herself to turn and face him. Let’s get this over with already. “What do you want, Eric?”
He hadn’t expected her to make the first move. He approached her slowly, the heels of his boots tapping methodically as he took his time to stand over her, like he were playing a game and she was the unfortunate pawn.
The first smile graced his lips that Aurora had seen all day, but it was the grin of a deadly predator and it only made her stomach churn uneasily. There was no friendliness there.
“Where did you get those cuts on your hand?” The question was so unexpected, Aurora had to take a step back.
She blinked, brows creasing. “I got them this morning… When I was training…” She was suspicious now, wondering in what direction Eric intended to go with this. It was so frustrating that every time she expected him to start on one thing, he diverged to another.
He nodded, but Aurora could tell he was up to something. “Before breakfast? With… Four?”
Ah. There it was.
It was so ridiculous, Aurora couldn’t stop herself from laughing out loud. “Eric! Are you jealous? That I ate breakfast with Four?” Her amusement made Eric’s eye twitch. Careful.
“Don’t be stupid, Aurora. You have no idea what is going on here.” His words were frosty and camouflaged with aggression. A snake poised to strike.
The amusement was quickly gone from Aurora’s face. “Then what is going on here, Eric? You kiss me for no reason other than what- you can?- And then you come at me like I’ve done something to you? I don’t owe you shit. I don’t have to explain to you why I have certain friends. I don’t have to submit to you just because you’re in a bad mood. I don’t have to-”
Eric lunged forward, snatching her jaw in his hand so tightly that she couldn’t even close her mouth. A sharp yelp pierced out of her, but she was instantly frozen with fear. The pain on her lips sprung tears to her eyes.
“Let’s get one thing clear,” he snarled inches from her face. She screwed her eyes shut but he forced them back open with a painful jerk of his hand. “I can do whatever the fuck I want. This faction answers to me. You answer to me. Your friends answer to me. You better get used to it sweetheart, because the only way that’s gonna change is if you’re dead or Factionless, and then you know what? I also decide if and when that happens.”
Aurora couldn’t form any words at all. She wanted to thrash around like a deer caught in a snare, but his tight grip prevented it. Her adrenaline was already pumping, preparing her for a worse assault she felt could come at any second. His hands were so powerful, a sickening thought occurred to her that he could completely break her jaw if he wanted to.
When he finally let go, her hand reflexively went up to massage the already-forming bruise on her cheek. She could only glare at him, though the fire had gone out of it. “Why are you doing this?” She whispered desperately. The worst part about all of this was that she couldn’t understand. She had never done anything, never tried to undermine his authority or insult him. How was this version of Eric so different than the man she had drank whiskey with in the empty cafeteria? The man who had given her back the knife she had stolen because he knew she didn’t feel safe without it? Her miserable green eyes betrayed the turmoil she was feeling, but she couldn’t tell if he noticed-or cared- at all.
Eric didn’t answer for a painfully long amount of time. He only stared down at her, his face totally unreadable. Then finally, he answered.
“Because you fascinate me. And because I can. I don’t want you hanging around Four anymore… If it’s extra training that you want, you can train with me. Every morning, five o’ clock. There’s still a lot you need to learn.” With that, Eric looked away and turned to leave, and Aurora was stuck standing in the middle of the gym feeling like she had been dropped onto another planet. She didn’t know which way was up and which was down.
Hey guys!
Thanks for being so patient with me, I have some goodies coming your way. ☺️ I've been working on Part 8 for Red and I think it's going to be pretty good. I'll be posting it tonight, I hope you guys like it!
Red - Part 7
Part 1 - Part 2 - Part 3 - Part 4 -Part 5 - Part 6 - You Are Here - Part 8
[Note: For some reason, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to make these posts... The text gets all jumbled, or doesn’t go through at all and I’m left looking at a blank post on my Tumblr. So if you guys get several of these updates and it’s all screwed up, I apologize! I’m trying to figure out how to post more smoothly... Anyways, yay, two for one. :) This is me making up for having such a short, bland chapter compared to all the others before it.
I’m having a lot of fun writing Four; he’s so different compared to Eric, it’s almost like writing an entirely different story. Things are picking up again! Tagging @elaacreditava and @dreamingoffandomscenarios.]

Aurora awoke with a pounding headache that felt like a drill was burrowing right through her temples. When she looked around groggily for Jaime and Lyanna on either side of her, both of their beds were empty and unslept in. They probably hadn't come back at all last night, because they weren't there when she had finally gone to bed either. She hadn't realized at the time how late it was. Maybe Lyanna was with the boy who had been flirting with her… Who knew where Jaime was. She was less predictable than Aurora or Lyanna both combined. Aurora smirked to herself when she pictured the curvy tattooed girl snatching another bottle of liquor and then traipsing off with it.
The other initiates were still sound asleep, and when Aurora looked at her watch, she saw it was only five in the morning. Was she really awake already? She couldn't have been asleep for more than three hours. But when she tried to shut her eyes and will herself back under for just a little more rest, her headache only intensified.
It was no use. She was awake now. With a grumbling sigh that was a little too loud and probably woke up at least one or two people, Aurora kicked off her blankets and rubbed her hands over her face. Her hair was a tangle of red curls and she could feel the tired bags under her eyes. All she really wanted was to have an entire weekend to sleep and not have to move or do anything at all. Suddenly she wished she had enjoyed the quiet life of being in the hospital… Then again, there was only so much someone could relax when they were in pain.
She got out of bed and pulled on her boots without bothering to lace them. She was still a little clumsy on her feet but managed to make it to the bathroom without stumbling into anything. Once she was able to splash herself with cold water, her headache dulled a little until she could ignore it.
There was far too much time between now and when the others would wake for breakfast. She was certain that she didn't want to just lay in bed and stare at the ceiling for another hour and a half. So she changed into a thin tank top and went to blow off some steam before the other initiates woke up and her privacy came to an end.
Only one light was flickering overhead in the gym, but it was enough for Aurora to start practicing her punches and kicks on a bag that was a little too high up, and had more scuffs and tears than she could count. She imagined that it was Eric’s face, or Evan’s, or Dalton’s on the rough fabric- the thought of them was enough to get her worked up. By the time her knuckles were bruised and split, it was her dad’s face that she was picturing. No amount of blood was enough when all she wanted to do was pay back every slight that had ever been given to her, every hand that had harmed her, every word that was spoken to bring her down. The way Dalton had taunted her and then attacked her, his hands around her throat, the way Eric had acted like he cared and then blew up in her face, the way Evan had treated her like she was only an object for his pleasure, and the way her father had hit her, locked her in her room, and starved her when she was a child… Everything surrounding Aurora became a blur until her vision was tunneled only onto the bag.
Her frustrations built up like a storm cloud inside of her until her chest was burning and it felt as though she were going to explode. She pounded harder and harder on the tough leather, ignoring the sharp ache in her wrists and the way her arms began to throb. Sweat was dripping off her brow and her assaults were moving the bag away inch by inch until it hung diagonally and only the momentum of her fists kept it there. She was so short, she was practically right beneath it.
“Remind me to never piss you off.”
Aurora took a jump back, barely avoiding the bag as it swung back down at her. She whirled around and came face to face with Four. How long had he been standing there? Nice going, Miss Oblivious, she admonished herself.
Aurora palmed the hair away from her face and blinked the moisture from her eyes, and only then realized that her knuckles stung and her arms hurt.
“Didn't I just see you a few hours ago? Did you even sleep?” He joked when she didn't immediately respond, seeming very amused by whatever it was he was thinking.
“Heh, yeah. Woke up early I guess,” she panted to try and catch her breath. She felt way too aware of his eyes on her so she busied herself with straightening the punching bag and kneeling down to lace the boots that hadn't been tied the entire time.
“You must do that a lot. You're always the first one into the training room,” he came around in front of her and adjusted the length of the chain holding up the bag so that it wasn't positioned quite so high up. Aurora felt her cheeks flush, because she was never able to do it herself. Dauntless equipment wasn't made for people under five-foot-four...
“Thanks,” she squeaked shyly and tucked her hair behind her ear. “I've always kind of been a light sleeper ever since I was a little kid. I don't like idle time,” she didn't know why she was explaining it to him. But he listened.
“I know how you feel. You should pace yourself though; you don't want to wear yourself out before training even starts. And your hands,” he nodded towards the swollen fists at her sides.
“Oh,” Aurora noticed little drops of blood staining her knuckles and hurriedly swiped them off on her pants, wincing as she did so.
Four promptly took one of her hands in his as though he were handling some delicate, sacred thing. He touched her knuckles so lightly that the pain didn't increase at all.
“What are you..?” She was so surprised she didn't even know how to finish her question. He was right next to her now, so close she could feel the warmth coming off of his skin. The gym suddenly felt crowded, and the air too heavy.
“You need to properly clean them- the cuts are going to get infected and then you won't be any use to anyone,” he explained nonchalantly. Years of experience were kicking in.
Aurora just stared at him blankly.
“Come on, I'll get you fixed up, then we can go get breakfast,” he was already leading her away before he finished speaking. She followed hesitantly, unsure of whether or not she should feel flattered or grateful or self conscious.
Four led her out of the training room and into a small office that was cluttered with random paperwork. Small black computer monitors rested on a desk in a cubicle, and a large first-aid box sat beside them. Aurora had never been inside this room before and she looked around at the cabinets, drawers, and the worn chair. It looked to have been some sort of control room at one point, but it felt too small to be for anything very important.
Four propped himself against the desk and flipped the lock box open, rifling through bandages and tubes of disinfectant. He settled on a thick pad of gauze and dipped it into a bottle of rubbing alcohol. The sharp scent burned Aurora’s nose.
“This is going to hurt a little,” he warned, and held out his hand for Aurora to give him hers, which she did. He didn't give her proper time to prepare herself before he pressed the wet gauze onto her knuckles. The searing sting was instant and Aurora hissed through her teeth at it.
“Sorry,” he mumbled as he set to work rubbing the blood from her skin before it could dry. His large hands were surprisingly gentle and dexterous, and Aurora found herself wondering how many hundreds of times he'd done this before.
“You're pretty good at this,” she observed as she watched. He switched to her other hand and began the process over again. This time, Aurora knew what to expect from the alcohol.
Four shrugged. “I've had to patch up myself so many times, I could be a medic by now,” he explained.
“What's the worst you've gotten hurt?” The question came to mind and she asked without thinking about if it was actually appropriate or not.
Four twisted his lips thoughtfully but didn't stop nursing Aurora’s cuts and bruises. After a minute he said, “I was stabbed once. That was pretty scary. Didn't hurt though. Adrenaline stops you from feeling injuries at first. I didn't even know it happened until my shirt was soaked.” For as much concern as he had in his voice, you would have thought he was talking about the dinner he ate yesterday and not a potentially life threatening wound.
Aurora’s eyebrows raised incredulously and she mouthed a silent ‘wow’. Four looked down at her face then. “I'm sure I can guess yours,” he said playfully.
Aurora accepted the challenge even though it was obvious what the answer would be. “Okay, try me.”
“Falling into the chasm. If I'm wrong, I will be very, very surprised.”
Aurora laughed and nodded, “I'll give you that one. But I definitely knew it was happening. Adrenaline didn't do shit for me there.” It was astonishing how easy it was to talk about now, as though it had happened in a different lifetime or to someone else altogether. Even though she occasionally found herself feeling uncomfortable in crowds with her back exposed to the room, the memory of the pain itself had faded. Then again, it was never the cliff itself that she was afraid of.
“On the bright side,” Four said, unpeeling a band-aid from its wrapper and sticking it to the deepest gash, “At least you won't have to worry about one-upping that one. As long as you stop trying to annihilate the training equipment.” He tossed the red-stained gauze into a small metal bin under the desk. Her fingers looked so small in Four’s hand, like that of a child’s. Her skin, too, was a drastic contrast. His was tan from being outside, and hers was pale, almost translucent.
“No promises there,” she said seriously. “That punching bag had it coming.”
Aurora flexed and rotated her wrist experimentally and frowned. Training would be a little bit tougher today if she had to add to what she had already done to her hands.
Four chuckled and closed the first-aid box, sliding it back into its original place. “Come on, let's get something to eat before you go tearing up the concrete floors.”
He shouldered past Aurora, and she followed a little more willingly this time. Four was easy to talk to. Aurora didn't feel as though she were being silently scrutinized or as though the things he said were somehow different than what he was actually thinking.
When they got to the half-crowded cafeteria full of bleary eyes Dauntless still half asleep, Aurora’s eyes swept over the tables and she shook her head to herself when she didn't spot Jaime or Lyanna. “I guess my friends are still out.”
Four followed her line of sight to the empty seats and then looked back down at her. “I'll sit with you if you want.”
Aurora looked up at him in surprise, her green eyes wide. “Really? I mean, you don't have to.” She couldn't believe that an instructor and commander of Dauntless intelligence was offering to eat breakfast with her. Was this some kind of trick..? Why was he being so nice?
Four didn't seem to notice her suspicion. “I don't mind. I usually skip breakfast anyway, so this is nice.”
Aurora blushed when he looked down at her and she turned her face away so he wouldn't see. “Thanks… again.”
……………..
Instead of sitting at the table she normally did with her friends and a few other of the initiates, Aurora and Four carried their plates to a smaller table towards the back of the cafeteria. It was a little quieter and Aurora realized that Four must not like being in the center of crowds either, because he sat with his back to the wall just as she did. Or maybe he was just used to being able to watch everyone else.
“Why don't you normally eat breakfast?” Aurora asked as she bit into a slice of toast with a crunch.
Four scrambled up fluffy eggs with his fork and shrugged, “I usually go for a run in the morning. I like to check on things, go outside for a bit and get some fresh air. It's the only time that everything is quiet, when everyone else is in here.” Aurora nodded, knowing that all too well. It wasn't uncommon for her to arrive late to dinner in favor of getting some privacy, just as she had done yesterday.
“That's true. The biggest surprise when I transferred here wasn't even the fact that this place is underground. It was that there's always some kind of activity going on, even at night.” She recalled how in Amity, after sunset, everyone would come in from the orchards and fields, and nights were filled with the chirping songs of crickets, not feet scuffling against the ground and hushed voices bouncing down the halls.
“The only good thing is that it's easy to keep busy. But also hard to relax.” Aurora looked at him out of the corner of her eye when he said that; it was almost like their brains worked exactly the same way.
He noticed her staring and looked up at her. “...What?”
Aurora bit her lip to conceal her smile and shook her head, returning her attention to her toast. “Nothing, it's just like we have the exact same thoughts.”
Four smirked thoughtfully, eating a fork full of eggs and taking a sip of ice cold orange juice after.
Aurora’s eyes wandered around the cafeteria aimlessly. It was slowly filling up as more people came in and took their seats at their own tables. A steady hum of voices and clinking silverware was filling the air. It was still nowhere close to the commotion of a late evening dinner however, when everyone was winding down after a long, eventful day.
Aurora caught sight of Eric then, sauntering into the hall, carrying a steaming cup of coffee. He brought it to his lips, but almost as though he could sense her, he suddenly looked up and made eye contact with Aurora. She felt a sliver of fear trickle down her spine when Eric looked at who she was sitting next to. His eyes flicked back to her and she saw his jaw visibly clench. She recognized that piercing stare, the one that shot right through her. But he had no right. There had to have been another reason why his eyes narrowed when he glared at Four, because he had made it abundantly clear last night that he didn't give a rat’s ass about Aurora. Whatever it was, it didn't have anything to do with her. At least, that's what she told herself. But she wasn't very convinced.
This time, she was the one that looked away. She returned her focus to her breakfast, but she felt his intense stare so heavily, she felt as though she might be crushed by it. The phrase ‘If looks could kill…’ came to mind.
Four noticed the way her posture became rigid and her head ducked down. He looked around in confusion, but by then Eric had spun back around and walked right out of the cafeteria in only a few strides. With a bewildered glance her way, Four resumed eating, deciding it wasn't worth questioning. Maybe her toast was still hot...
“So since we’re friends, you gonna let me take it easy today?” She said when she could speak again in a weak effort to veer her thoughts onto another subject.
Four chuckled at that, his straight white teeth showing past his full lips. “Not a chance. I'm tougher on my friends.”
Aurora wanted to sink back into the light-hearted, friendly banter they had had going only moments before, but she was too tense to relax completely now. Something in Eric’s face had jarred her. The way those cold blue eyes had latched onto her with more ferocity than she had ever seen before… She got the feeling that their argument last night was not the end of her encounters with Eric.
Sending out some feelers here... I’ve been working on a Suicide Squad fic on the down low when I’m not writing “Red”, and I think I might start posting bits and pieces of it. I have a really cool idea on how to go about it! I’ve been planning it for a while now. ;3
Who would actually be interested in reading it?
Red - Part 6
Part 1 - Part 2 - Part 3 - Part 4 - Part 5 - You Are Here - Part 7
[Note: This one took me a little bit longer because I was trying to figure out how to go about this in the best way… Of course it wouldn’t be the same if Four weren’t there to challenge Eric in ways other than armed combat and computer skills ;) Ya better watch out, Aurora. You thought Eric was angry when a stranger tried to kiss you… Imagine what he’ll do when he thinks Four is trying to steal his little project from him. Aurora didn't bother going back into the club to rejoin Jaime and Lyanna. The energetic vibe suddenly felt tiring, and she didn't want to chance running into Evan again. Especially not when her eyes were red from her tears and her nerves were shot. After Eric had been gone long enough for her to pull herself together, she simply wandered off to be by herself. The general goal was to head back to the dorms to hopefully try and sleep, but she found herself subconsciously gravitating towards a familiar and unexpected place instead.
She could hear the distant hollow roar of underground rapids far below the chasm, but when she looked over the edge, she could only see darkness. Frigid mist lightly sprayed her face, dewing along her lashes and through the loose strands of her hair. When she tried to peer closer, she couldn't see the ledge that she had fallen onto, but she could sense its closeness as though a part of her was connected to the rock itself. In the back of her mind, she wondered what it would look like if she were standing at the bottom and looking up. Would the florescent lights that dotted the pathways look like stars? Or perhaps the darkness at the bottom was all-consuming, and there would be nothing to see at all.
The thought of it was enough to make her shiver violently. But rather than retreat, she inched forward and took a seat on the ledge. Her feet dangled over, and the chill rock bit at her skin through her jeans. From this vantage point, it was easy to imagine that everything was very small instead of looking straight down into the abyss.
“Don't see very many people relaxing on the edge of the chasm,” a voice echoed off the wall behind her. She turned her head, squinting through the shadows until Four stepped into the dim light. His arms were crossed over his chest, muscles thick beneath his tight black T-shirt, but his chocolate brown eyes were gentle.
Aurora shrugged and turned back to the darkness beneath her feet, “It’s quiet here.”
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Four stop short of the edge by five or six feet. When he spoke again, his voice seemed tense. “There are better quiet places that aren't a hundred feet off the ground.”
Aurora turned her torso so she could fully see him. His mouth was pressed into a tight line and he was staring past her, over the drop off. “You don't have to be here. I'm fine.” It was odd to her that he was speaking to her at all. She had only seen him a few times, and she was certain he didn't even know her name. Surely he had better things to do.
He swallowed uncertainly before speaking, “Aren't you the girl that fell over here? You aren't scared to be here again after you almost died?” His voice took on a judgmental tone and Aurora could see the flicker in his eyes that said ‘This girl must be crazy.’
She shrugged again, but she really had no answer. “I don't know… It doesn't really bother me. I just wanted to be alone somewhere without a bunch of people passing back and forth around me.”
Four must have felt as though she were implying that he was the type of person she wanted to be away from, since he had spotted her and come to investigate.
“Sorry, I didn't realize. I'll leave if you want me to,” he stepped back, but Aurora called after him.
“No! I mean, you don't have to. I didn't mean it like that. I just meant, I didn't want to be with the other initiates,” she explained, worried that maybe she had offended him. He was a person of high importance, and if he was anything like his associate- Eric- then she really didn't want to upset him. She wouldn't be able to take two arguments in one night.
But he only breathed a laugh and nodded, “If you say so. But I'm not sitting on the edge of the chasm.”
Aurora smiled and used her hands to scoot herself back towards him, not trusting herself to rise with the alcohol still buzzing through her. Maybe that was the reason why she found herself seeking comfort in Four’s company, even though he had never been a friend to her.
With a huff, Four folded himself to the ground and crossed his legs. He still seemed uncomfortable, but Aurora attributed it to the awkward silence between two people who knew nothing about one another.
“Are you up here because you're scared of initiation? Or is there something else bothering you?” He asked quietly. His voice wasn't prying at all, and Aurora found herself wanting to confide in him. Jaime and Lyanna could be trusted with her secrets, but they knew her too well. They would judge whatever she said, or take offense to it, even if that's not how Aurora intended it.
She picked up a small shard of stone, idly passing it between her fingers while she searched for the right words. “It's not the tests that I'm worried about. I know I can pass them. I know I can hold my own. But the people here,” like Eric, that bastard, “they're not what I imagined when I chose to transfer here… I've been attacked. I've been punched and kicked and almost thrown into a chasm for no reason other than standing up for myself. I've been used, insulted, degraded, and I've only been here for what- two and a half months? Where's the camaraderie that was such a big deal when I first joined? Because it feels a lot like every man and woman for themselves.” She didn't mean to spill that much, but once she opened her mouth it just came pouring out. She bit her lip self consciously, wondering if she really did seem crazy.
Four was silent for a while. She felt him glance down at her and study her face, but she didn't make eye contact with him. Did he feel insulted?
“Yeah,” he finally agreed, and Aurora was surprised. “It does seem like that a lot of the time. It's tough to make a place for yourself here. You really have to fight for it. You have to watch your own back, because ultimately no one is going to do it for you. But there are people that you can trust.” He nudged her with his arm reassuringly, and it made her smile despite how bad she felt. He was the first stranger that was speaking to her on a personal level rather than shouting orders at her or treating her like an object.
“Were you a transfer?” She suddenly asked. The way he spoke, she felt as though perhaps he was drawing off of experience. Dauntless-born didn't really have to carve their own spot in the compound, since they were born and bred into it.
He hesitated. “We’re talking about you here, don't change the subject,” he deflected with a pep in his voice but Aurora could tell that it wasn't as lighthearted as he wanted it to sound.
She let it go though without prying too far. She knew better than anyone than to go searching through a person’s past. But one thing kept bothering her.
“No offense, I appreciate it, but… Why are you talking to me? There has to be something you'd rather be doing. I didn't think you knew who I was.”
“You just look like you could use a friend. Life is easier when there are people you can talk to.” He said it easily as though this weren't the first conversation they had ever had.
A small smile began on Aurora’s mouth and it quickly widened when she realized what he said. “So we’re friends then?” The proposition of being a friend to Four was a nice one… He was handsome, high ranking, and smart. Aurora would be lying if she said she hadn't stolen a few peeks at him when he was showing them how he wanted them to fight and train. But of course she had been so caught up on that stupid asshole and his stupid eyebrow dermals and the stupid tattoos on his stupid neck and the stupid plugs in his stupid ears…
Four saw her sink and he wrapped a muscular arm around her shoulders comfortingly. “If you want it,” he said, giving her a gentle squeeze.
Aurora felt tears prickling at the backs of her eyes because of his kindness. He was warm and sweet and it was everything she needed at a time like this.
“Thanks, Four… I had no idea you were such a softy. I kinda thought you were intimidating and hated people. Like Eric,” her mouth screwed up around his name and Four didn't miss the bitterness in it.
“Eric is definitely hard to get used to. But don't let him scare you. That's just the type of person he is.”
Aurora fell silent as she mulled over his words. After a few minutes, he climbed back onto his feet and offered his hand down to her, “It's getting late and you have a big day tomorrow. I'll walk you back to your dorm.” Aurora accepted his hand gratefully and allowed him to pull her back onto the narrow path.
The journey back to the initiate bunker was silent, but comfortable. Four felt like more of a guide and less of an instructor. Aurora liked that he allowed her to be quiet, allowed her to rouse on her own and speak on her own terms. He didn't try to pry anything out of her, and she didn't feel the need to fill the silence with useless small talk. Then again, maybe it was only the tired crash after the careless buzz of the rum was gone.
Aurora could hear voices up ahead, the remainder of the initiates finding their way back after having their own night out. They all seemed happy. Of course they were, none of them had had to deal with Eric’s misplaced fury. The thought of him exhausted her, like she had been wearing down slowly and was now finally finished.
“Hey,” Four coaxed her out of her thoughts once more and Aurora looked up at him, green eyes searching through his brown and finding a strange thoughtfulness there.
“Don't worry about anyone but yourself. If you need anything, just come find me alright?”
She didn't have the right words to thank him, so she only nodded her head and offered as good a smile as she could muster. She wanted to believe him, and that he was as generous as he was making himself out to be, but how could she trust anyone after everything that had happened to her?
Four seemed satisfied and turned to leave, to go back to wherever it was that he had come from. “Goodnight, Aurora,” he cast back, and she was stunned into silence.
He knew her name.
