Yesterday, I got Medal of Honor: Warfighter for my PC. DVD case in hand, two things ran through my mind: can my PC run this? Will this be as bad as they say it will be?
I grew up playing the Medal of Honor games. Right from the very first game of the series, Medal of Honor, back in 1999, me and my brother got hooked to it. We would play it up to the wee hours of the night until our fingers turned blistery and our eyes would just give up. We'd usually play the missions, alternating between each ones. But usually, I'd let my brother play the hard one's; admittedly, he's better than me at this. The PlayStation console would just cry because we just wont let up on the game.
Soon enough, we finished the campaign mode. We're off to some multiplayer action... which was back then the two-player mode. We would laugh at each other tripping over stick grenades and eating up Panzerfaust shells. We even played with cheat codes on. It was all fun.
The First MOH games had lots of weird moments
Then came the sequel, Medal of Honor: Underground, and I think this time, we really played the heck out of this game. I also remember those times because that was the time when the PlayStation console just gave up on us. It was a heartbreaking moment for us. But we were Manon's biggest fan. And we would go to those Console rental shops just to play the game.
We both grew up a bit and grew distant from these games. At least for a while. Then we shifted our focus from console to PC. We got Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and we became night people again. I probably still know every location of the baddies for every mission in this game. Except for the one where you're in a snowy forest, littered with snipers wearing white camouflage. Boy, did that mission give us a heck of a challenge. I also particularly liked the mission "Sniper's Last Stand" for the same reason. And who could ever forget the "Saving Private Ryan"-esque Omaha beach landing?
This was probably the last MOH game that I played to the fullest. We played a bit of Spearhead. Then there was a bit of Airborne. They were all fun. Forward to present, errr, to 2012... we got Warfighter.
When the game came out, I didn't have a decent system to play the game with. So I waited... forward again to yesterday...
Warfighter seemed like a decent game. But to the eyes of many, it was a franchise-killer. While I have yet to play entire the game through, I still feel quite upset that EA is pulling the plug on this once-legendary series. One that defined the WWII-era games for PC (MOH:AA came and put the world in awe before Call of Duty came. In fact, MOH:AA's creators created Call of Duty) and one that I grew up playing the heck out of. The fall of MOH is EA's own undoing.
I don't expect to see another MOH title soon. But hopefully, EA would get their sh*t together soon enough and not ruin another perfectly-good franchise and run it to the back burner.
