Not a Date

“Are we really doing this?” Hero murmured to Villain in a low tone, claiming their hands.

Villain cocked their head to the side. “Do I hear fear, Hero? I thought you were supposed to be the brave one.” They teased quietly.

Hero met their eyes so softly that Villain nearly melted. They were so beautiful when they were unsure- you could write sonnets about the depth of emotion in their eyes alone. “I’m giving you a chance not to ruin your reputation.” 

“Nonsense.” Villain reassured. “I don’t have a reputation to ruin, darling.” Then they guided the self-conscious hero onto the dance floor.

Hero needed someone to remind their traitorous heart that this was an undercover mission- not a date- but Villain apparently wasn’t going to be that person. The hand at the small of their back kept Hero close as the dazzling pair glided across the dance floor. Slowly, other couples drifted to the sides to watch as the Hero and Villain swirled in a hypnotic pattern around the room.

“They’re watching us. All of them.” Villain whispered, feeling a little less confident outside of the anonymity of dancing in a group.

“As well they should.” Hero replied. As if on instinct, they exchanged roles, allowing Hero to take their turn guiding Villain through elaborate steps that brought the orchestral music to life. Villain smirked.

“You’re loving all this attention aren’t you.” Came the teasing accusation.

Hero swept Villain into the air in an elegant lift, then gently set them back down just in time to end in a graceful dip. The pair made breathless eye contact as light applause broke out from their audience. 

“Absolutely.”

Villain didn’t know that they cried out in their sleep.

Hero knew. But only because they had taken to personally guarding Villain’s cell when they have been detained.

What Hero doesn’t know is that Villain receives horrifying visions of the future that they are aiming to avert through chaotic actions.

Hero really just wondered if Villain always made such pitiful squeaks at night, or if it was the effect  of being imprisoned. They longed to take Villain somewhere warm and safe, somewhere far from here where they could talk in peace.

Significant Backstory Notes:

- Car crash at age 4 permanently damaged his left shoulder

- Started displaying powers at the unusually young age of 7

- Accidentally used his Charm on The President of the US when he was in fourth grade (the president was visiting the school for publicity). Unfortunately the secret service thought that this was an attack by a mutant extremist group, and promptly took him down. Poor Milo spent two days in custody as a nine year old while the situation was sorted. The jailers fitted him with a silencing collar (which doesn’t cause pain, it just disabled his voice) and also refused his parents any visitation during that time. This incident is why he’s so skittish of anything that might interrupt his voice.

- Joined Ballet as an outlet for his anxiety at the age of 11

- Became student body president at age 17 and held the title through his senior year of high school

- Dated Katherine as an 18 year old. She does not deserve an ounce of your time, but I’ll some it up by saying that she was very abusive to Milo. (read it here)

- Met Zenia around the same time he started dating Katherine, but didn’t start dating her until a few months after Katherine died (age 19)
