James Albert Baudelaire was not his birth name. It was a collection of names he had collected over time. Born in 1104, approximately, James was immediately thrown to the streets when his eyes show bright orange, almost red. His parents thought he was a demon instantly. A young witch by the name of Elysande took pity on the newborn baby and cared for him as her own. It was through her love and training that James grew to be a powerful Incubus. His self-control was unparalleled, and his heart always went out to wayward magical beings who had nowhere else to.
The power of an incubus was odd, and James had developed a power that most coveted. He had two forms, the elder man of James who reflected his true form, and then Jake, his youthful countenance that he could revert to at will. He could walk the streets as two people, both town patriarch and bad boy. His body had aged, but his soul had not. He always held youthful cheer and bounce in every step.
James fathered many children, some who grew to be quite successful and even famous. Others left the fold as soon as they could. In Bartlett, a few children remained with him. Dominique, Helena, Anatoly, and his youngest Rhiannon. They all had come from very different mothers, but he loved them just the same. Unfortunately James had never gotten to the paternal part of his growth. He loved his children truly, but he never quite did right by them.
When his youngest daughter showed to be much more than he could handle, he enlisted the help of a longtime friend, Emmeline Bullock. Having met her in New York City during the Prohibition era, James saw an opportunity to take a broken young woman and give her the opportunity to mold herself into a queen. He'd left her with a large sum of money, and Emmeline had made an empire with it. Of course, when he asked for help, she came quickly.
James knew he was losing control of the town. Genevieve's presence had brought in the advent of magical and non-magical both living together and aware of one another. He didn't have to hide his nature anymore, but at the same time he lost all of his freedom. Bartlett was a safe haven for those who had nowhere else to go, a quiet place for magical beings to live in peace. And he feared whether or not someone was going to start a witch hunt and tear the town apart.
As an Ilios Incubus, James was able to reel in his tendencies at an early age. By the time he had hit his first 100, he was able to live with humans without any detection. It took him all over the world, however. Though his body aged slowly, very slowly, people still noticed that he wasn’t the proper age any longer. James’ special gift, however, came in handy more often than not. His true face was that of a sixty-eight year old man, but he could disguise himself easily. Humans were easier to fool, and that’s what drew him to Bartlett.
Altering perception of those around him, James had effortlessly created Joey, his alter-ego that he used when he wanted to walk the streets of Bartlett undetected. People said James had eyes everywhere but was never present in the community. But Joey was always around, always playful and fun. With the advent of Genevieve and her stance of magical equality, James has had to become more present as his true form, the seemingly 68 year old town patriarch. Though he owns most of the land and businesses in town, he knew that his distance was a problem now.
Being over a millennia old, James has had the opportunity to father many children, both magical and mute. Some leave and live their own lives. A handful every now and then stay. Dominique, his daughter by a French sorceress, has travelled with him since birth. When her powers as a siren were awakened, James became her anchor by pure accident. He takes extra care of her and she is often considered his favorite. Helena, his daughter by a British nurse he'd met while posing as a soldier, grew close to Dominique and chose to stay with her father and sister. Occasionally she leaves for other endeavors, but she always manages to return home. Anatoly was his first son in a long time. His mother was a Russian ballerina who'd captured James' heart. Being like his father in species and temperament, they often got along best as friends rather than father and son. His youngest child, Rhiannon, was born unexpectedly. James immediately took the baby away from her mother, a siren by the name of Linnea Fitzgerald. She was his only child to be born in Bartlett, and it was no secret that he did not know what to do with her. His long time friend and ally Emmeline Bullock was more of a parent Andrew present in her life than James ever had been. James had given Emmeline everything she needed to build an empire during the turn of the century, which she did flawlessly. The least she could go to repay him was to assist his youngest and most deadly child as she grew up.
Other residents knew James as boss or landlord. He owned most of the town and funded almost all of the businesses. Investments he had made over a hundred years ago were so much more profitable than he could have imagined. As Joey, he was known throughout the town as a playboy, having had serious relationships with Leighton Bentley, Logan Walker, and Spencer Orman. Of course, they were all strategy ploys, and his best way to keep an eye on the town and it's magical families. He hasn't stopped breaking hearts, especially now that someone's threatening his paradise.
