my thoughts on legends za
hi i'm alive
sorry for not posting at all the hyperfixation has not favored pokemon in a hot minute but i did play legends za and wanted to talk about it
spoilers under the cut, obviously
first thing's first: i enjoyed the game!
i thought it was pretty good, but there WERE some things i wasn't as happy with
but overall, i liked it! definitely not my favorite (bw will forever hold that title), but something i'm still glad i played
i liked most of the characters, i thought they were great
team mz is.... so charming. i love them, they're adorable
i also liked the rust syndicate more than i expected, they were actually great! they give team skull mixed with team star, which are two of my favorite villain teams in recent years (ignore that sm came out almost a decade ago)
same with ivor, when he was introduced i definitely raised an eyebrow over wanting to keep the wild pokemon but get rid of the wild zones. i didn't think he was going to be the villain, but i definitely thought he was a bit suspicious. fortunately, he really grew on me! he's genuinely just a himbo who thinks with his muscles first and thinks everyone else also does that, he's great
honestly, the only characters i'm not a huge fan of are jett and jacinthe. jett has so much wasted potential, like she's not even there for basically all of the game despite the fact that she was mentioned a decent amount pre-release. i swear to god if the only way to find out literally anything about her (or whoever urbain/taunie is looking for) is buying the dlc i'll riot
jacinthe is just annoying lmao. she's pretentious and obsessive and rich, i kinda can't stand how the game insists you're friends with her. lebanne is cool though, i like her
i don't really have any notes on gwynn, canari, or tarragon. actually that's not true tarragon kinda pissed me off making that obstacle course during the climax but that's literally it asgkljhsf
i really liked the idea behind grisham and griselle, the idea that everyone is still scared of team flare five years later makes perfect sense to me and the fact that they were born and raised into it but still forced to carry the stigma i found really interesting and well thought out
and then we get to l and az.
i'll start with az, because i definitely have less to say about him
i thought his story was really well done, it made perfect sense to me that he would just find a place to live the rest of his life in and if he can help other people while he's at it, that's even better
i was.... kinda stunned when he died at the end, ngl. like yes he definitely had so so so many death flags, but i was genuinely convinced he was immortal
his death was really sad, for sure, but i thought it provided a pretty perfect sense of closure. he's fixed all of his mistakes, he got to spend a few more years with floette, he's able to rest now. i cried but i definitely thought it was narratively satisfying
now, l. l.... i have things to say about him
i'm gonna be honest, i did not recognize him at first. it took until him saying he wanted to make a beautiful world or whatever after the mega starmie fight for me to put it together
yes he looks so much like lysandre and yes other characters from xy returned but in my defense i'm autistic and bad at facial recognition. leave me alone
i was. kinda stunned that he survived? and also that he was working with zygarde a little bit
i was a bit sus of him the whole game, which i feel is fair, but he didn't actually do anything bad so. that's good i guess
the fact that he lives 3000 years now i was kinda confused by like. how do you know that sir. is this a proven fact.
i do like the implication that firing the ultimate weapon gives people a wayyyy longer lifespan, though that does kinda raise some concerns for urbain/taunie given that they were stuck in ange when it was going crazy and shit
i was also confused when corbeau said that lysandre helped him out when he was younger like how did he help you. what happened there. wish we got answers on that, but i can live without them (i cannot live without answers on jett and whoever urbain/taunie is looking for. gamefreak this is a warning, do not make me pay extra for those-)
overall i thought l was cool and well implemented, lysandre was already the best and most interesting member of team flare, but in terms of pokemon characters whose name is a single letter he doesn't hold a candle to n
oh yeah and mable. i almost forgot about her. honestly i don't have anything to say. she's a pokemon professor now ig. good for her! she isn't sycamore though
just realized i didn't mention emma i'm so sorry emma--
i thought that emma was fucking FANTASTIC in this game! she's really grown into being a detective and she fills looker's shoes PERFECTLY. i love love LOVE how she personalized the looker bureau with pictures of mimi and looker and xerosic, and how mimi has her own chair and stuff.... it's excellent. she's great, i'm so proud of her
onto things that AREN'T the characters, i liked the story! i appreciated how there genuinely wasn't a villain in this game, it was just repercussions of the team flare stuff five years ago, pokemon's never done that and i thought they did it well here
admittedly the story was pretty barebones outside of the climax, but the climax was excellent and the story before that was still charming, if a bit disjointed--it felt more like we had a few mini-arcs and then a climax rather than something more cohesive
the wild zones were neat, i appreciated how it combined pla's "danger the pokemon WILL kill you specifically" approach with sv's approach of "pokemon are just chilling dude"
i do have. questions. about some things in lumiose though. mainly the gym tbh what the fuck happened to the gym. prism tower was like locked down the whole game and when it wasn't it was actively trying to kill people like there was a gym in there what happened to it. where are clemont and bonnie are they Okay
the only other things missing were the gogoat couriers or whatever they were called, which were more of a novelty anyway, the furfrou salon, which was explained in the furfrou league sidequest, and the pr studio (i think that was what it's called), which was a feature that was straight up not in this game, which is fine honestly i never cared about that anyway
i'm a little disappointed that you can't just wander into any given building and explore, i really liked that, but ig that wasn't true in sv either so i guess it makes sense. do wish we found out what the fuck was up with that ghost girl but that was always a pipe dream anyway lmao
i liked the za royale, it was fun and interesting, but nothing special imo
clothes are back! thank fucking god honestly i loved that shit and was SO disappointed when it wasn't in sv
i do like a lot of the clothes, i just wish more colors were available for more clothes. like i can't dress in all pink unless i want a very specific style or whatever. other than that the clothes are good though
there weren't any regional variants, which makes sense considering i don't think that kinda thing can happen in just five years, even in pokemon, which is kinda disappointing and surprising, considering they've been in every game since sm. like i said, disappointing, but i can live with it
edit: something i forgot to mention was that the game was, or at least felt, really short? maybe i've just been playing long games for a while, maybe i just play games faster now, maybe i've got more free time (unlikely, university is kicking my ass). but i've been fucking around in the post game for maybe.... six hours? maximum? and i've apparently played the game for at least 55 hours, so the main story (including me fucking around and not doing things immediately) was like 50 hours. that's probably an appropriate length for a pokemon game, honestly, i just remember every other game taking longer to beat
i just looked it up, howlongtobeat says sv's main story takes 32 hours, which sounds wrong but okay
apparently howlongtobeat also says that this game is 24.5 hours for the main story so idk maybe i'm just greedy
finally, onto the main non-character point, the megas!
i really really liked all the new megas! as a unova girlie, i was THRILLED that so many of the new megas were from there, ESPECIALLY chandelure, who is one of my favorite pokemon. it was really refreshing having new unova megas after over a decade with only audino
i thought that the way new megas were introduced was really well done too! having every major character have their own signature mega plus the rogue megas introduced them all fluidly and diegetically
floette and zygarde having mega evolutions was a nice story beat, too
i would say my favorites of the new megas were probably chandelure, froslass, and floette, though i don't know if she's attainable
my only real complaint about the megas is that you only get to see one of your rival's starter's mega evolve. like i chose chikorita and didn't get to see mega feraligatr until i caught a totodile, evolved it, and then bought a mega stone and used it, which was kinda annoying
also you don't get to see all of the megas when playing through the story, but the ones you don't see (apart from the above) are all old megas, so i'm not too upset about it. and some megas are missing but they're the hoenn starters and legendaries, that's fine
and... yeah! that's my thoughts on legends za! i haven't gotten too far into the post game yet, i've caught the legendaries and done a few infinite za matches, so if there's more after that i'll update this. but overall, good game, some flaws, thank fucking god they waited to release this
edit: i beat the infinite za royale mission, and i do have some thoughts:
thank fucking god we get eternal floette, something i didn't say before is that it was such a letdown that we saw how cool she was but didn't get to have her ourselves, which this fixes!
i think this is a good way to wrap up urbain/taunie's story, we finally get some answers on who they were looking for and resolve the lingering plot thread between them and jett, which brings me to
we still do not know fucking anything about jett. like she's urbain/taunie's grandmother and the president of quasartico (until she steps down ig) and we know literally nothing else. we barely see her, and honestly she feels wasted in a way that reminds me of geeta, except even more of a letdown because at least you get to interact with geeta throughout the game and stuff. a huge waste of a character, and probably my least favorite thing about this game
