I had always thought that leaving my home would be a dangerous and terrible mistake.
I knew that it had to happen, but even still, I was frightened. To say that I find my emotions to be disagreeable would be an understatement; fear can keep a person safe, but it can also stop them from doing what needs to be done. I knew in my head that nothing in that forest could hurt me. Not if I believed it was so. But still, my fear held me back.
And maybe my fear was right? All I can remember is leaving that house and walking, farther and farther and farther away, through the trees and the muck. Eventually, things began to change. The forest I had studied all my life gave way to something alien and strange. The grass grew taller, and the fog grew thicker, until I could hardly see my hand in front of my face... strangest of all, I began to see shadows moving around me, shadows I did not recognize. Shadows that did impossible things. I wondered if I might have passed out on my journey and was experiencing some new sort of dream. If that is true, then it has been a long time since I was last awake.
Still, I wandered. What else was I to do? I had no choice but to continue then. I ended up following a stream-- I would need fresh water anyway, if I expected to survive out there-- until I found a gate that lead out into civilization. It turned out that the forest had an end after all.
I'm not used to living in a community. I try to keep myself looking presentable, just in case I find myself becoming host to any guests. But these visits were few and far between. Eventually, they stopped coming entirely. I must have let myself become disheveled in the time between. After all, I was always so busy. I say this because when a woman emerged from her own house and saw me standing at the forest gate, she couldn't seem to help but fuss over me. She was angry, scolding me like I was still a child, and insisted that I come to her home to rest. Now, I find myself a guest in someone else's home for the first time. I have so many things that I have to get right.
I'd prefer not to stay for too long.
Now, I have learned that the shapes I saw in the fog were more than likely creatures called "pokemon", fantastical beings that seem to break the laws of nature. But no animal can break the laws of nature. This is why I must observe them; what I perceive to be an impossibility must be borne from a simple lack of knowledge. This can be remedied through careful study. Everything of the natural world can be explained. That which can't, must be of something else.
This writing system will be used to chronicle the results of those studies. Hopefully, they can be of more use than my old ones.
Addendum: I haven't needed a name for a very long time. At this point, I have no attachment to any particular one. However, if you want an example of what you could call me, "Bormot" is fine.
