A few weeks ago, a video timeline showing the history of pole dance circulated on social media, and essentially took many liberties to (inaccurately) link contemporary pole dance to Chinese pole and mallakhamb (video title: “Pole Dancing Was Originally for Men”). To be clear, no one dismisses the merits of Chinese pole or mallakhamb, it’s just that it’s misleading to say that because they performed on a pole apparatus first, they are the pioneers of the contemporary pole dance industry. So, to give credit where credit is due, and honor the true pioneers of contemporary pole dance, I worked in solidarity with the Fistful of Steel documentary to give a more accurate account of the (real) history of contemporary pole. Please donate to Fistful of Steel documentary… the campaign ends Thursday, October 13! Fistful of Steel is a documentary about the emergence and evolution of contemporary pole dance, as told by the people who have shaped the industry.
