Getting Real About Substance Abuse Through Music

Substance abuse has been a  long-term issue gradually affecting millennials, Gen-Z and past generations stemming from their teen or even preteen years. We often used substances or drugs to fit in with our peers or used it as a cushion to soften the various blows we receive from reality. Substance abuse continues to have terrible long-term cognitive effects on teens and contrary to popular belief can stunt creativity and clarity of the mind. Although teen drug use has dropped a staggering amount, marijuana and vape use has increased or stayed relatively the same. Through countless methods of teen-targeted advertising from organizations such as The Truth and through music and art, the use of tobacco and cigarettes has reduced dramatically when compared to the stars of the early 2000s, but still remains a concern for many of us.

The L.A. based underground hip-hop duo “Substance Abuse” tackles this issue through music. The duo is comprised of rapper Eso Tre and emcee Subz. Their Waes One and Philm One-produced single “Bridges” featuring Aceyalone, a member of the Freestyle Fellowship. In the process of creating a ‘jazzy, upbeat’ record that was not only conscious but relatable, the duo featured Aceyalone on it. 

"We couldn't think of a better emcee than Aceyalone to bring on board, as he has a special talent for creating dope songs built off of a single metaphor. “ Eso Tre says.

The duo cited that their goal was to “create something unifying and elemental a la late 80s hip-hop collective Native Tongues, distinguished by their use of jazz-influenced instrumentals. “Bridges” became a unifying anthem for the duo in what they called divisive times, referring to our current political atmosphere.

The duo continues to raise awareness for substance abuse, through music, one song at a time.Listen to Substance Abuse’s new single “Bridges” down below.

Issue N°1: REIMAGINING

Issue N°1 REIMAGINING focuses on all things dreamy, imaginative and retrospective.

The idea for Reimagining came from reviewing several pieces of controversial art that reimagines but does not erase history, in a creative way. Inspiration for this issue was drawn from several artists from present time including Kehinde Wiley, Elizabeth Colomba , Andy Warhol and older painters such as Diego Velazquez. For this new issue we urge submissions to be imaginative or even a recap on an event that was important to you.

Issue/Edition: Politeen accepts submissions such as stories, poetry, and photography adhering to the theme of each current edition of the magazine. Politeen organizes 4 issues every 3 months based on a theme curated by the editors, a Fall/Autumn Edition (Sep-Nov), Winter Edition (Dec-Feb), Spring Edition (Mar-May) and Summer Edition (Jun-Aug)

Current Events: Politeen promotes a worldly point of view and accepts submissions covering daily events and breaking news. Submissions for current events have to be timely. We provide a platform for self-expression and emphasize freedom of speech.

Politics: Politeen provides a platform for self-expression and emphasizes freedom of speech. Being the space for political commentary and analyses from teens, we accept submissions of all kinds. 

Art: Politeen accepts any medium of art as long as it is able to be represented on a digital platform. Art in Politeen includes visual, audio and expression, meaning that we'll accept your dramas and short films as well. In addition to images and videos, we also accept art commentary, art history, and coverage on art culture.

Pop Culture: Stories in our pop culture category envelop the progression of music, subcultures and cover celebs, fashion, and the latest trends. Similar to current events, submissions for pop culture have to be timely.

WHAT WE ACCEPT:

Written Work: essays, poetry, fictional and non-fiction short stories, editorial/journalistic articles, op-ed, commentary, reviews, current events/world news

Art: digital artwork, online comics, illustrations, images of paintings and artwork, photography, digital media, videos, short films (including transcripts, scripts), music (audio, SoundCloud, Spotify, YouTube)

WHAT WE DON'T ACCEPT: 

Works promoting bigotry, racism, sexism, ableism, islamophobia, homophobia... The list goes on and on. Politeen is designed as an inclusive platform for the underrepresented narratives to shine.
