Yeah the thing about (proto)fascist movements is they seldom win very big in elections on their own, but they are extremely effective at dragging the next most conservative party much further to the right than they previously were.

In 2010, only like 44 out of 635 seats in congress were won by Tea Party candidates, yet they utterly radicalized the Republican party and set the stage for the election of Donald Trump. And in 2015, UKIP only won a single MP seat, yet managed to steer the Conservatives right into the Brexit referendum. Both of these 2016 votes were probably some of the most destructive reactionary backlashes ever seen in developed democracies.

So no, PPC didn’t win much this election but their policies might win a lot more in the next one.

I'd like to remind everyone that even though only 1 known MPP was a Klan member, the KKK were instrumental in getting James Anderson elected as Premier of Saskachewan in 1929. He then passed an amendment to the Schools Act that the Klan had been pushing for--the banning of French language instruction and Catholic schools.

pundits are already talking about the PPC splitting the vote and how O’Toole’s “gamble” of trying to bring the party a bit closer to centre-right didn’t pay off so yeah

on the other hand -- the current iteration of the Conservative party is less than 20 years old, born of a merger between the far-right Alliance and the more centre-right Progressive Conservatives, so maybe one party is too broad to contain all those ideologies and it would be inevitable some would split off at some point?

Yes if they are dialing the numbers manually; No if a computer is doing the dialing. This fact means that people who have only a cell phone and no land line will be systematically excluded from polls with automatic dialing. Since cell-only people tend to be mostly young people, the pollsters intentionally overweight the 18-30 year olds to compensate for this effect, but as more people drop their landlines, it is becoming a serious issue. It actually varies by polling company! For example, Angus Reid also uses online polling (in addition to phone). The combined polls (e.g. what’s reported by 338 Canada or the CBC Poll Tracker) usually try to balance the different methodologies employed by the different companies.

Hey, I know this is silly but I wanted to ask someone. Recently a friend said they were fined 500$ for voting incorrectly like striking a ballot wrong. I said that wasn't possible? maybe they got scammed? but is it? like depending on the province / region exc...I've never heard of anything like this before.

???? the only things I can think of: if they tried to vote twice (which you can’t do but I assume they would just stop you if they caught it), or if they took a picture of their filled-in ballot (which is illegal)

the worst thing that happens if you don’t fill out your ballot correctly is that if the poll workers can’t tell who you intended to vote for they can’t count it.

To expand a little bit for anyone whose not Canadian or familiar with Canadian political history on the extra layer of "oh snap" to the reply that might not be obvious.

"Just watch me" was famously said by Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, Justin Trudeau's father, during the October Crisis and became a bit of a, I don't want to say meme because that has more amusement based connotations but basically a non joking meme, in Canadian politics afterwards.

Justin Tredeau has very much played into and used his father's reputation and public image to his advantage throughout his career, so Jagmeet Singh replying to Tredeau's remarks this way specifically isn't just him making a snappy one liner its also him calling that out/challenging Trudeau's image as the perfect version of his father.

It also can’t be understated what a big deal Pierre Trudeau is here. Depending on your perspective, he was either the worst thing to happen to Canada or a goddamn rockstar. He was largely responsible for decriminalizing homosexuality and abortion, he fully detached Canada’s constitution from the UK and wrote its Charter of Rights, he hung out with Fidel Castro in the middle of the Cold War, and there’s a famous picture of him making fun of the queen by spinning around behind her back. He dropped that famous “just watch me” in response to a question about how “far he was willing to go” to protect members of parliament during the FLQ crisis. He wasn’t perfect, but he definitely did not give a damn about anyone’s opinions.

Singh isn’t just telling Justin Trudeau that he’s not living up to his father. Singh’s positioning himself as a better successor to Pierre Trudeau because he’s more willing to make bold decisions — so it’s also an indirect way of calling Justin a waffling coward.

ugh I am so tired of this “early election” drama. has everyone forgotten that the 4 year thing was something Stephen Harper came up with and it was *never* going to work for anyone but majority governments? whatever, the election was called, nothing underhanded happened this is literally how parliament works, can we just have an election and stop trying to score points about it
