So its now been one whole week since i’ve started up with Japanese and i’ve been just powering through it.

This week I’ve managed:

- ~220 words - 74 kanji - 4 chapters of Genki I

My goal is to get through a chapter every three days or so, but once classes start up i’m afraid i’ll lose my time and motivation.

But i’m going to try! I don’t want to sound like some dumb ignorant English speaker when I go there in 5 months.

I’ve managed to keep on with Japanese for a whole week and i’ve actually made progress??

This is my third (fourth??) time picking it up and i’ve finally actually gotten past greetings and made it to the fun grammar.

C1/C2 German Grammar Books

Here’s 3 books I can recommend for those who are sadistic love German grammar so much they want to be tortured by it  be really challenged by it. I’ve included pdf links (via drive)to two of the books and an amazon link to the latter as I can’t find a .pdf. The contents page has also been included as an image.

1. C-Grammatik by Anna Buscha

This what I’m currently going through at the moment and it perhaps the simplest and most aesthetically appealing of all the books. It goes quite in-depth with areas concerning verbs and tenses, and the section on different types of sentences is quite challenging (TIL about Partizipsätze for example). There are also lots of funky section on Verbindungen so like Verb-Noun combinations, Verb-Preposition combos, Adjective-Case combos etc. etc. I recommend this one to start off with :)

2. Übungsgrammatik für die Oberstufe by Karin Hall

This is the most extensive of the books and the most recent, so if you can afford it then I highly recommend it - but also the amazon.co.uk link has a book preview and it allows you to view about 100 pages at least?! It’s an incredibly high amount tbh. This one tends to be more focused on sentence structures, moods and voices, and will be more difficult than C-Grammatik.

3. Übungsgrammatik für die Mittelstufe by Friedrich Clamer

Although “Ober” is higher than “Mittel”, this is made by a different publisher who didn’t have that distinction and this is thus the highest level by them. This is hardcore mode - the first 30 pages or so are pretty easy, but then you’re plunged into the “Nominalisierung” and “Verbalisierung” as well as the Past Konjunktiv mit Passiv mit Modalverben. This is focused almost entirely upon sentence structure and how sentences can be expressed differently and it’s very heavy-going. But give it a try, you’ll “enjoy” it :-)

It’s been a super duper long time since i’ve updated this blog. I arrived in the UK at the beginning of september and have been getting accustomed to everything.

Now that i’m settled into the postgrad life i’m going to try and keep this updated more frequently in the precious little free time I have.

Before I went on my year long exchange to Germany two years ago I bought a map of Europe to hang on my wall in Canada with the goal of putting a pin in each city or place I see.

I just got pins for it and got it all set up just before I fly off to England for another year long adventure on Thursday.

Gonna fill out the UK and more of Europe this year!

62 German Genitiv Prepositions

Okay so everyone loves prepositions (!) and the genitive case (!!) in German, so here is a list of 62 genitive prepositions.

* I have checked with Duden.de whether they are genitive or not. Plenty of these will be used in dative in everyday speech and the majority of these are reserved for legal/formal speech and as such. I have listed the most common genitive prepositions at the bottom along with some notes :-)

#1. Why do this? Because I (nerd :() find it interesting. Whilst many of these are indeed dated terms, there’s always a chance of encountering them when exploring complicated documents or old texts. Of course 75% of these aren’t essential to know but hey if you’re interested go 4 it.

#2 zugunsten/zu Gunsten etc. - the preferred form (based on duden) is one word and I would agree as nearly all prepositions are one word.

#3 Multiples? Since there are several prepositions in here meaning the same thing, I’ll clarify the most common:

- on the occasion of = anlässlich - instead of = (an)statt - by means of = mittels - regarding = hinsichtlich - including = einschließlich - because of = wegen - by/in virtue of = kraft - thanks to = dank - despite = trotz #4 Most common genitive prepositions: - (an)statt, trotz, während, wegen - außer-/inner-/ober-/unterhalb (CANNOT USE DATIVE WITH THESE) - diesseits/jenseits/beiderseits (CANNOT USE DATIVE WITH THESE)

One of the things i’ve always wanted to learn to do was subtitling. After getting a bit of inspiration from a blogI follow who transcribes audio to practise German, i’ve decided to sit down and subtitle (and then translate!) videos from my favourite German youtuber, Michael Buchinger. 

It’s super duper fun and its actually proving to be quite useful. I normally just watch and just understand whats being said, but listening and picking out each individual word is actually quite challenging.

Haben oder sein? Verbs that take both.

A lot (if not most) of us are taught that German verbs take either haben or sein in the perfekt past tense.Most verbs take “haben”, while verbs that imply movement or change of state take “sein”. 

This is a lie.

Well not entirely. There are a handful of verbs that can take either of the auxiliary verbs depending on what exactly is going on. One of my grammar books has a couple examples of some of the more common verbs that take both haben/sein in the past tense (These all happen to be strong verbs as well):

Dringen (dringt, drang, ist/hat gedrungen) - to penetrate, to insist Das Wasser ist in den Keller gedrungen - The water got into the basement Er hat auf die Einhaltung des Vertrages gedrungen - He insisted on the adherence to the contract.

Fahren (fährt, fuhr, ist/hat gefahren) - to drive Er ist nach New York gefahren - He drove to New York Er hat den Wagen in die Garage gefahren - He drove the car into the Garage

Fliegen (fliegt, flog, ist/hat geflogen) - to fly Wir sind nach England geflogen - We flew to England Der Pilot hat das Flugzeug nach Rom geflogen - The pilot flew the airplane to Rome

Reiten (reitet, ritt, ist/hat geritten) - to ride Er ist durch den Wald geritten - He rode through the forest. Er hat dieses Pferd schon lange geritten - He rode this horse a long time ago.

Schmelzen (schmilzt, schmolz, ist/hat geschmolzen) - to melt, to smelt Das Wachs ist geschmolzen - The wax melted. Sie haben das Eisenerz geschmolzen - The smelted the iron ore.

Schwimmen (schwimmt, schwamm, ist/hat geschwommen) - to swim Der Schwimmer ist durch die Elbe geschwommen - The swimmer swam across the Elbe Er hat drei Stunden im Schwimmbad geschwommen - He swam in the pool for 3 hours.

Stoßen (stößt, stieß, ist/hat gestoßen) - to push, to bump Er ist mit dem Fuß gegen einen Stein gestoßen - He hit his food against a stone Ich habe mich an der Küchentür gestoßen - I bumped myself on the kitchen door.

Treten (tritt, trat, ist/hat getreten) - to enter, to step on Er ist ins Zimmer getreten - He entered the room Er hat mich auf den Fuß getreten - He stepped on my foot.

Verderben (verdirbt, verdarb, ist/hat verdorben) - To spoil, to ruin Das Fleisch ist in der Hitze verdorben - The meat spoiled in the heat. Er hat mir alle Pläne verdorben - He ruined all of my plans

Ziehen (zieht, zog, ist/hat gezogen) - to pull, to move Das Pferd hat den Wagen gezogen - The horse pulled the carriage Er ist in eine neue Wohnung gezogen - He moved into a new apartment.

A lot of these verbs are usually taught with sein as the auxiliary verb, but it is important to know that haben is also an option!

Verben mit Präposition

(Tut mir schrecklich Leid, dass es so lang ist!) Viele haben ständig Problemen mit Verben, die feste Präpositionen brauchen.

Leider gibt es keine Regeln - Jedes Verb muss mit seinem eigenen Präposition gelernt werden. Glücklicherweise hab’ ich einen Auswahl der gebräuchlichsten Verben mit Präposition.

Lithuanian Verbs - To be + First Type Verbs in Present + Negation

First post about Lithuanian grammar! I’d first like to note that i’m writing all this as I learn the language - anything i’m unsure about I ask my native BFF but I do make mistakes. Don’t hesitate to correct me!

būti ir nebūti

Lithuanian has only two irregular verbs - būti (to be) and nebūti (to not be). They’re conjugated as follows:

Aš esu - I am Tu esi - You are Jis/ji yra - He/She is Mes esame - We are Jūs esate - You (pl) are Jie/jos yra - They are

Aš nesu - I am not Tu nesi - You are not Jis/ji nėra - He/she is not Mes nesame - We are not Jūs nesate - You (pl) are not Jie/jos nėra - They are not

First type verbs

Lithuanian likes to shake things up a bit and add different verb types which are all conjugated differently. To simplify it, the verb type is derived from the ending of the present tense third person conjugation. For example, the infinitive of to give is duoti. The form we want to look at for conjugation purposes is the third person, which is jis duoda. Because this verb ends in -a, it is a first type verb.

As I said earlier, only būti and nebūti are irregular - all other lithuanian verbs follow a predictable pattern of conjugation. The first type verbs conjugate as follows:

Duoti (duoda) - to give Aš duodu - I give Tu duodi - You give Jis/ji duoda - He/she gives Mes duodame - We give Jūs duodate - You (pl) give Jie/jos duoda - They give

And another example:

Kalbėti (kalba) - to speak Aš kalbu - I speak Tu kalbi - You speak Jis/ji kalba - He/she speaks Mes kalbame - We speak Jūs kalbate - You (pl) speak Jie/jos kalba - They speak

Negation of verbs

Negation of verbs is actually pretty simple in Lithuanian. As we saw with būti, the negative form added the ne- prefix giving us nebūti. The ne- prefix can be applied to every Lithuanian verb. Duoti (to give) becomes Neduoti (aš neduodu | mes nedoudame...[I do not give, we do not give]). Kalbėti becomes Nekalbėti (do not speak), Dirbti (dirba, to work) becomes Nedirbti.

Hallöle! | Labas!

I’ve finally decided to start up the language blog I've been sitting on for over a year. 

I’m a canadian who recently graduated with my BA in German and in a few weeks i’ll be flying off to the UK to begin my Masters in Translation. 

I’ve been learning German for about 7 years, 3 of which were in university and 1 in southern Germany. More recently I've begun self studying Lithuanian and have been entertaining the idea of picking up Korean and French.

My goals with this blog are mostly to chronicle my language adventures and to have a place to collate all the resources I come across / write up myself!
