Hey sorry I don't have any question but I just want to say how I love that you love the great Gatsby. I love Tumblr how people have such hyperfixations I think it is the most beautiful thing in the universe!!!

Ok I do have a question:

How much of the great Gatsby do you think is real and what parts are nick making up?

I think there's definitely a lot more truth to the Great Gatsby than there is like fabrication. My thing with it is I think there's a lot more that Nick leaves out, not things he makes up, y'know? Im sure he makes up a lot about Gatsby's grandeur. But not as much as the fanbase seem to believe he does? I'm sure people weren't like "OH MY GOD WOW THIS GATSBY GUY WOW" like Nick tells it, but I'm sure a fewww people knew him. Just less than what Nick tells it as. I think Tom was worse than Nick tells it as, Daisy and Jordan too. Truly, I think George, Wolfsheim, and Myrtle are people that Nick probably demonized in his writing. With Nick's prejudice.. Wolfsheim probably wasn't as cruel as he was written as in the ending.

But a whole summer and he only got like 9 chapters out of it?? He's definitely leaving so much out. And especially things that make him seem bad.

That's such a sound point about how Nick only somehow gets 9 chapters out of a whole summer. 10 days per chapter 🤨 yet not 90 days described in the book or anywhere close.

This translation of Aristotle's Categories is so shoddy. They have him saying an example of a homonym is a man and a painting, which makes absolutely no sense in English. In Greek, this makes sense though because the two words sounded the same. But like the point of a translation is so that you don't have to know the original language to understand it.... They should have translated his example as saying like, 'A bow of a ship, and a bow in hair.' or something. Because they've made it sound like he looks totally unhinged.

Plato was all: let's get rid of all material possessions and be kawaii meanwhile Aristotle is straight up saying:

'it is also characteristic of the magnificent man to furnish his house in a manner suitable to his wealth.' like what??? I'm sorry? Spending money making your crib into the ultimate man cave is now virtuous???

Real talk though: the idea that one has to be virtues one has to spend money on his own material possessions is a foolish idea. After all this barely brings any benefit towards either himself, for material possessions rarely if ever enriches our life. Sure it grants us dopamine. However, there is a hedonic treadmill and even a mansion grows stale eventually. And of course, spending your money on yourself for self evident reasons has no benefit towards anyone else in society.

Aristotle's work here is biased towards rewarding hegemonic masculinity as virtuous. Whereas Plato was more egalitarian on the sexes, Aristotle is a staunch conservative. Asshole.

I've observed that recently people try and separate the high brow (fancy art, fancy books, classical music) from the low brow (booktok, reality TV, pop music,) etc. This separation is often sexist as it claims that the feminine belongs in low brow. (After all, who do you unconsciously associate with pop music? (Teenage girls listening to Taylor Swift?))

In reality, some of the most feminine celebrities are intellectuals. A famous example is Marylin Monroe who read everyone from James Joyce to Tolstoy.

The nobrow is the merging of the two brows. It's like when Superman references Nietzsche. That's nobrow.

An example today is Paris Hilton here and Dua Lipa both engaging in reclusive novelist and basically, the Emperor of Hipster Books, Thomas Pynchon. So I guess this is just an appreciation post. Thank you people who uphold the nobrow.

Hegel is confusing. I've tried to read him and I didn't understand much. Is he mumbo jumbo though? Probably not! Part of the problem I think, is that people try and understand Hegel when they've not read that much philosophy. They also try and jump into his magnum opus the PoS as the first book. If a dude had read Kant and Spinoza, then that dude would probably understand Hegel.
