I need Captain America: not as a person, but as a concept
I want Steve as Captain America. I want Sam as Captain America. I want Bucky as Captain America. I was Nat as Captain America. I want a righteous governor as Captain America. I want a manager of a community center as Captain America. I want a protestor sticking it to the government as Captain America. I want a little girl who is working to improve her class' learning conditions for everyone as Captain America. I want a random guy who's raising awareness about a life-changing prospect as Captain America. I want a person who's working to spread accessibility for all kinds of disabled people and people will special needs as Captain America
I don't want Captain America: the savior, the leader, the wisdom, the man
I want Captain America: the hope of people, people you can trust, people who will count everyone in, people that are willing to learn and try, people that will make it better without destroying themselves in the process
Steve shouldn't be "the legend of the man who gave it all." Sam shouldn't be "the one trying to live up to the legacy."
And I mostly want it because whether it's Steve or Sam, the burden of the shield is immeasurable. You're not allowed to make mistakes, you're not allowed to stray away without "tarnishing" the mantle or America herself. You can't be your own person, you live as Captain America; you die as Captain America. You sell your soul to the shield, and I hate that
Captain America shouldn't be one man dedicating their entire life to a "purpose" until they die. Captain America should be an institution of trust, loyalty, and justice. "Captain America will take care of it" shouldn't be putting your blind trust and burden into one person who will ruin themselves for the Cause. "Captain America will take care of it" should be people actually putting their trust into the justice, in people who they know will fight for the good, in not just "let's punch the bad guy" way, but all kinds of ways that is necessary
Captain America shouldn't be the warrior, it should be the fighters who believe in people. Who believe in the good. Who will step up in places others won't even dare whisper. People who don't believe in "necessary evil" because it's bullshit. People who will save even the last person because 1 is still the biggest number if you're doing the saving
Steve Rogers' legacy shouldn't be a shield and a myth no one can actually live up to because it was never real in the first place
Steve Rogers' legacy should be the foundation of peace he wasn't scared to build the base of that ended up with people coming together to do the right thing TOGETHER
People who will fight the bad guys, people who will fight the bad government, people who will fight for the ones that can't protect themselves, people who will protect the ones that aren't even acknowledged, people who will do the paperwork, people who will do the community building, people who will do the distribution, people who will do the planning, people who will pinpoint the problem, people who will assign the necessary solution and the people who can do it, people who bring in other people, people who will fund and the ones that will use it for good, people who will be transparent with the work they do, people who will do the defending, the talking, the spreading, the driving, the loving, the including, the helping, the hyping, the smiling, the encouraging, the acknowledging
When people say "Captain America" and think of Steve Rogers: I don't want them just thinking about red white and blue, golden hair, blue eyes and a shield; star spangled man with a plan. When people say "Captain America" and think of Steve Rogers: I want them to think of the hero who gave it all to make everyone else a hero
Captain America shouldn't be a curse disguised as a gift that will drain you until your last breath. Captain America should be the belief of a better tomorrow, because people are actually working to make it that way
