sometimes I get the urge to be so bitter and spiteful on the internet and then I remember I can be just bitter and spiteful in my lyrics instead <333
Thank you to the one who asked this great question. I feel like "mirror starts moving without me" was slept on because the cheerleader visuals were gone. I'm happy Mia is bringing it back. @pompomsquad
Mia literally named her band "Pom Pom Squad"....like?
You limited yourself by naming your band that.
The imagery and visuals weren't the problem for me with 'Mirror Starts Moving Without Me' - for me, the music just wasn't as good as 'Ow' or 'Death Of A Cheerleader' - it was missing that 90's edge that those two albums had.
She's almost 30, so I understand she wants to move on from the cheerleader imagery and motifs, but seriously girl - you named your band Pom Pom Squad.
Hiiii so I hear what yr saying but something I do want to add here is that there are plenty of bands with theme-y names that evoke a specific image - but, for example, Soccer Mommy doesn’t dress like a soccer player, the band Tennis don’t dress like tennis players, Little Big League never dressed as a Baseball team etc. - In many cases a band name can just be a name! Obviously the difference with PPS is that I *did* play up and embrace a more literal interpretation of my band name when I was younger because it was fun and attention grabbing and a little gimmicky! That said, if I had never done so I wonder if people would still have that expectation of me. I also think in the specific case of PPS, cheerleading + cheer aesthetics are strongly tied to high school/youth in a way that doesn’t really feel appropriate for me to embody so literally anymore! When I named my project I was 17 - I wasn’t really thinking about how it would effect ~my brand~ (or if I’d even still be making music under that name) at 28 years old! Like I said in the story I want to find different/more subtle ways of still nodding to my previous stuff, but ya I don’t feel like the more literal approach is quite right for me as a person anymore.
Also I def hear the criticisms about the music and I actually agree with some of them! I know people were disappointed in Mirror for more than just the aesthetics and, even though I am still proud of the album, I can understand why people felt that way. Idk I learned a lot from the whole thing! I do think people will like the next project better but who knows!! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ anywayyy I appreciate the listens regardless!
