After 11 years as a Dominican monk, Giordano Bruno (1600) became a scholar of cosmology and expanded upon Copernicus' idea that the earth was not the center of the universe. He postulated an infinite universe with an infinite number of worlds, and that future humans might travel through space to discover these worlds. For his troubles Bruno was charged with heresy, tortured and on February 17 of 1600, publicly burned in front of a cheering mob.
