damn the goldfinch yaoi actually went so fucking crazy im trying to sleep rn but i’m just remembering boreo (not an uncommon experience) and just. damn what the hell did they go so hard for. boris kissing theo’s bloody fist that punched him. clumsy teenage exploration, internalised homophobia and solace in neglect. a dear friendship. the fact that boris was canonically theo’s first and thats ?? just a thing that was included?

like do you ever just think about how there was no need to include the fact that boris and theo would make out and be physical when high and drunk and for them to kiss goodbye followed by an internal i love you. like all of the jealousy theo felt and the lines pointing out the gay people he’s come across, how he’s repeatedly conscious about homosexuality. it was all consciously written like damn. boreo toxic yaoi dear friendship was all apart of the Actual novel and was deemed necessary to our understanding of theo. like damn

While I was reading The Goldfinch, I was weirdly drawn to the detail that Theo read Full Metal Alchemist in Andy’s room. Maybe Donna Tartt just picked a random manga. But it’s weird that, of all manga, it’s a story that was also kicked off by the tragic death of the protagonist’s mother who raised her son(s) as a single parent due to an absentee father. And the story is shadowed by the consequences of the crime the protagonist committed out of grief.

practically every character in The Secret History played a role of someone that they were not.

richard and bunny played themselves as rich, when in fact they were poor.

charles and camilla played themselves as pure, when in fact they were weaved with immorality.

francis played himself as cool, when in fact he was an anxious mess.

henry played himself as intellectual, when in fact he was blinded by his own stupidity, wealth, and ego.

julian played himself as a father figure, aiding to the care and minds of the Greek students, when in fact he was conniving and egocentric, swept away by his own gain, unlike a true father.

mrs corcoran played herself as a victim and sorrowful mother of a lost child, when in fact she only cared about her own appearance in front of the camera.

hell, even dr roland played himself as a psychologically-forward man, deep in intellect, when in fact he was nearing dementia and a complete gobble of a man.

i mean, gosh, this theme plays out so grandly. putting up a front and hiding your real self. whether for gain or by self consciousness.
