Chris and Sam met each other second of the main protagonists. They both knew Josh first, Chris through third grade and Sam because she met Hannah at a volunteer day at the zoo and became close with her, then Hannah was like āI have a brother your age. You should meet him.ā They all hung out with Beth a lot through Washington family functions as well, then eventually met the rest of the cast.
I have a fic about this, but Sam was going to go to junior prom in a girl group with Emily and Jessica, but got a concussion that Chris took her to the ER for. She was so upset about needing to miss prom because the doctor told her no strobes or loud music. But Chris offered to take her and hang out outside with her (because Josh and Ashley were busy, he wasnāt initially going to go). And thatās why Samās mom loves Chris. She felt like he was sweet to stay with Sam at the ER then offer to still give her the junior prom experience.
When Josh was really struggling during the year between lodge visits, he and Chris would both vent to Sam, sometimes about the same occurrences both within a few minutes of each other, via text or call. Sam was so understanding and good to them by laying out for Chris what Josh needs to hear (Chris has a practical mind and defaults to giving solutions, but Josh is more emotional and just needs comfort) while at the same time explaining to Josh that he was putting Chris in the position of a therapist and that Chris canāt be expected to always understand how to help.
Sam is the type of person who leaves fifty apps and tabs open on her phone, just because she forgets about them. It sickens Chris, and he frequently asks for her phone so he can close them all.
Chris was the first person Sam sketched in her art-book, but she intentionally flipped a few pages forward then went back to fill the previous ones so her mom wouldnāt start teasing her about it when she looked through her art.
I wrote a fic about this as well: Chris convinced Sam to go to a comic con with him by promising to get her lunch while there. She ended up seeing that the dealersā room also had handmade things and small business loose leaf tea. He ended up being the one reminding her to save money.
Also she gave him so much crap for the prices of the individual Magic: The Gathering cards he was buying.
He ended up taking her to a vegan restaurant, and she was touched by this because he usually makes fun of her for her veganism.
The feelings started from Samās end. Chris still liked Ashley, and he got the sense that Josh liked Sam so he was always really careful about things with Sam, out of worry of feeling like a traitor to Josh. Sam was similar in that she was starting to like him but wanted to respect how he felt about Ashley (and respect Ashley).
Part of why Josh is so big on getting Chrashley together is that he doesnāt want Chris and Sam to end up together. They spent a lot of time with him and his sisters, so he could see it happening. He was against it partially because he likes Sam, partially because heās terrified at the thought of being a third wheel.
I think I got this from someone else partially. Chris doesnāt care much for animals, and Sam has a dog that like despises him. Itās named Beansprout, and Chris is sometimes like āif we go over to your house, the dog needs to be in in the yard. I donāt want Beansprout ending my bloodline.ā
This is partially from the game, but Chris is really bad at identifying animals as well (he calls the wolverine a tiger, and he confuses bear and deer tracks). Sam teases him for this.
Part of why Sam started liking Chris is because of how he is with Hannah.
Sometimes he and Hannah annoy each other. Chris is REALLY not what Hannah likes in guys; she thinks heās too unserious and loud. Chris thinks Hannah is too sensitive. But at the same time, Sam has also watched him save videos of butterflies and horses and owls to send to Hannah. He gets actually excited about showing her things on the internet he knows sheāll like. Because Sam has heard some of the others make fun of Hannah for being childish and into weird things, she likes that Chris actually gets excited about showing Hannah one of her special interests.
Iāve said this one before: Chris and Sam went to a theme park on Valentineās Day because they werenāt paying attention to the date. They ended up getting into a bunch of romantic stations through the ride themes (and workers assuming they were a couple) that, to spare themselves embarrassment, they started just hamming things up and being as ridiculous as possible about being together, to make it all seem like a very intentional joke. This goes into how their cut dialogue is. Jess suggests they were off doing something romantic, and they just lean into it with Sam calling Chris āRomeoā and stuff.
They donāt realizing that itās all subconsciously starting to take on a grain of truth.
