      Popo was clearly distraught… and that vivid memory probably only triggered it further. While he didn’t really see any heart chains surrounding her now, it definitely was taking a toll on Popo. Alto was at least glad he had caught her when he did. He made sure to listen to Popo’s worries intently, patiently waiting for her to gather her words. Seeing her cry like this made him upset, but he knew better than to tell her not to cry.

      Crying was good for her… he hadn’t seen her shed a tear before all that much in his company. It was comforting for Alto to know she felt comfortable enough to cry in front of him too. He took her hand in his to squeeze it; to reassure her just a little bit. Usually this had helped Lisette when she was younger… but Alto felt it would help Popo now.

      “Popo… you don’t need to worry about that. Everybody feels like that every once in awhile. I feel it too…” Alto glanced downwards for a second, “I wasn’t strong enough to save my village… but Lisette doesn’t hate me and I don’t hate Lisette for what she couldn’t do either. The important thing is we all have to do what we can. If you make a mistake, it’s okay. I wouldn’t leave you alone just for following your heart… and I definitely wouldn’t if you’re honest about your feelings.”

                    ( I feel it too. )

          Others felt the same way...? Amidst sobs and streaming tears, Popo looked up to Alto to see if he really meant that. It seemed he did, but Popo still couldn’t help but feel that he didn’t fully comprehend what she was feeling. The fact of the matter though... was that he was trying. Despite not fully understanding, it was a relief that someone cared enough to try and want to understand the pain. After all, no one liked pain. 

          Popo curled her hand around his, hopefully communicating those feelings of gratitude and appreciation. Didn’t this hurt Alto...? What if Popo wouldn’t be able to shake off the memories and words that still haunted her to this day? Wouldn’t it be too much for the Conductor at some point? Then everyone would surely dislike her for having done that to Alto! 

          “Alto... what if I can’t move on from these memories...? What will happen if this just keeps happening? Won’t you get tired? Won’t you want to leave...? Won’t it get to be too much for you? Popo is trying but... it doesn’t feel like I’m making any progress.”

      Being inside her heart really made the experience all the more intense. Popo’s sadness, her willingness to help a stranger in need and the fear and hatred in that little girl’s eyes as she looked at her. It all came collapsing in on him, but he held fast. He could practically feel in his own body how hard she was fighting off monsters to protect the townspeople. His throat felt sore from all the singing she performed around the clock. Just by looking at her, you couldn’t see just how strong Popo was. Her cheerful attitude completely contrasted everything Alto had witnessed her go through, even when they had first met.

      He could never forgive Bonanza for what he’d done! It was because of him that everyone in Port Noir hated her. They didn’t understand just how much she truly did for them… and yet they scorned her. Even now, she was still haunted by the thoughts of Port Noir. It was understandable; it was her home. It was all she ever knew for so long… and Alto sympathized with her. Mithra had been the place he had only known for so long until Hilda’s song ripped everything away from him.

      “Popo…” Alto’s throat felt tight, but tried to shake it off. Popo needed him right now… he was the only one who could help her through this suffering right now. It was his job as a Conductor, but right now it was more personal than just that. He stepped closer to the Wind Witch, but he didn’t quite reach out to her just yet.

      “Are you worried something like that will happen again? Is that what’s making you uneasy?”

     Alto was likely going to need to tune her after this conversation and that was okay. Popo always felt better after a tuning and every time she was tuned, she was able to find a bit more confidence in herself to keep going down the path she walked now. A path that led to singing the Anthem that would dispel the crystallization that plagued everyone, Popo would be able to truly help! But how could she if she couldn’t even be strong enough to withstand the thoughts and memories that haunted her? 

     On top of the memories that haunted her on a regular basis, Popo had these thoughts piling on top of them as well that added to all the negativity that now felt suffocating. At this point, all she wanted to do was cry. The tears welled up in the corners of her eyes but she couldn’t bring herself to let them fall. What would the others say? They’ve all been so nice and wonderful to her, but if she let them know that she was still hurting.... wouldn’t they dislike her for not trusting them?

     Her voice cracked and Popo could barely get a full word out, let alone a sentence. “I... Ye...” She mumbles, before a whine takes over and she instead lets a tear or two stream down the curve of her cheeks. “Yes.... and it’s more than just that. What if I don’t do a good job protecting the others? And what if everyone gets mad at me for feeling this way? Because then they’ll feel like I don’t trust them to not leave. Then they’ll hate Popo and Popo will be all alone again...!”

          “I’m sorry! I didn’t want to hurt you! I just wanted to help…!                                         Popo just wanted to understand…” 

     Was the cry of the Wind Witch who came across a young girl who had run to field in order to find solace from a group of kids who were bullying him. As big as the distance from her and Port Noir was, there were still some things she could see. However, the girl quickly shifted her fear of the other kids to Popo and she was backing away with wide eyes which clearly threw fear and even hints of hate in the blonde’s direction. 

     All Popo wanted to do was ask what was wrong and maybe provide a listening ear. But it seemed as if all her efforts to make a friend always went down the drain. No matter what she did… the people of Port Noir would hate her. Even knowing this, she still tried every once in a while to reach out to whomever may cross the fields she lived on. 

     Soon enough the girl backed away and ran towards town, yelling before Popo could do anything to help him. “Stay away from me you no-good wicked Witch! I hate you!” 

     All Popo could do was watch as her figure faded into the scene of the town in the distance. There was nothing she could do for the little girl… but, she was part of the town. Even if she didn’t know it, Popo was always protecting her because she lived in the Harbor Town. Popo protected everyone in Port Noir. She kept the monsters away even though no one thanked her or saw her work. She kept their windmills running to keep their crops and fields watered. She sang every morning, noon and night to ensure that the town would be prosperous and kept monsters away with her familiars. 

     Maybe one day they’d see that. That was Popo’s hope. All she ever wanted to do was help and be there for others. It was okay if the people hated her… as long as she could help them. 

     But… it would be nice, if she weren’t yelled at for trying to ask someone what was wrong or for wanting to help.

     Being with Alto and the rest of his friends was fun! Popo always had a lot of good times with them all, Lisette, Sakuya, Klaus, Archie and the rest of them. Everyone was so lively and everyone always had their work to be busy with. Popo wanted to be busy too… but what could she busy herself with in their free time?

She could go ask Alto to hang out! 

          ( They all hate you. )

     But sometimes Alto was busy too or was hanging out with someone else whenever the blonde had the idea pop into her mind.

          ( You’re a dirty Witch. Who in the world would ever like you? )

     So what was there for her to do? She had to do something! Something… before the thoughts that Alto told her weren’t true came back. She’d been doing so well… moving on from her days at Port Noir. Those lonely days in which she pushed those feelings away by doing something good. Protecting the people of Port Noir, even though they hated her, was definitely a good thing. Or it was, until she found out she’d actually been helping an illegal operation.

          ( See? Witches are nothing but trouble! A dirty sinner through and through! )

     Then at that moment, visions of the people at Port Noir looking at her with such hate in their eyes, fear… anger, came flooding in. They all became distorted until they looked like black figures with red eyes… scorning her. Spewing words of malicious intent in order to drive her away… even though she never went near the town. It was enough to bring her to tears at points… but she kept herself going with the knowledge that she was doing good for the town back then! Even still… that didn’t help in keeping the bad thoughts away for long. Popo had to keep herself busy back then. Even now… she has to, sometimes.

     “Ah! I’m sorry Commander Klaus… you weren’t supposed to see that… I didn’t mean… I don’t know what happened. I’m sorry…”
