alice’s jaw dropped lower and lower while the other continued with her explanations. “that is absolutely crazy! imagine if it’s a species they’ve never seen before? they could name it after you!” she clapped her hands out of excitement, which quickly faded into disappointment while she answered the question. “does an old boot covered in whatever there is at the bottom of the pond fit in the cool category? i’ve thought about starting a trend based off the collection of mismatched boots i’ve caught. i have so many already! nothing screams fashion like a crusty looking pair of booties, am i right?”

Poppy’s eyes widened at the idea and she shook her head. “I’ll have to check my books against what I’ve found and see! I’m sure someone’s found it though. It may be a whole big ocean but there are a lot of people looking in it, huh!” She bit her lip in thought, nodding along with the explanation. “Well, I think it could. Especially if you have a collection! You could clean them up and repurpose them probably!”

“I haven’t been fishing for a couple of weeks now. I think the last one I caught was a sea bass though.” Colton answered the other. “It’s been a while though. I’ll need to do it again and up my game with fishing. I usually throw my rod into the water and the fish goes in the exact opposite direction.” He chuckled.

“That makes sense, they seem to be the most common fish around here.” Poppy replied with a nod. “You really should! Though if they’re running away you might need more help than just practice. Maybe like, a good fishing book could give you tips! I bet I have one you could borrow if you’d like.”

It had been quite a while since Tia had gone fishing, even longer since she’d gone bug hunting. So thinking about whether she’d caught anything cool took a moment. “Hmm… not recently, no… the last fish I caught was a loach, and not a very impressive one. Have you caught anything else, or just the really big fish?”

Poppy nodded, understanding. “I think most of my catches are sea bass, loach, or boots. Every once in a while I get lucky.” She commented, shrugging. “Not anything else as interesting. I was only getting boring catches until that one so I stopped fishing to record it and I guess I got distracted then.”

“No, really? What kind of fish was it?” Flick asked, eyes going as wide as saucers, his body already leaning forward as if to catch a glimpse of a page from her journal. He let out a low, long whistle, clearly impressed. “Great catch!” he said. “Definitely worth recording in a journal.” Then, he scratched his chin, lost in thought, as if unsure whether or not to share his own experiences, too used to being thought of as weird for being really into bugs. “Well, erm,” he started, voice turning uncertain, “last night I caught a tarantula?” With his tone of voice, it almost sounded like a question. “I’ve been thinking of making a model…” his voice petered off.

Poppy shrugged, closing the book back up with a snap. “Not sure, I tried to record in detail so I could search my books for the species later. It might take hours of reading to find out.” She said dreamily, already excited at the prospect of so much time dedicated to reading. Her eyes widened at the thought of a tarantula. “Spooky, but also a good find! I’m not sure if I would’ve run away or recorded it! A model sounds cool though! Do you often make models of good catches?”

Labelle stood there listening to the female in front of her with a polite smile plastered across her face. “Yeah… I don’t do fish. But you do you girl. I’m there for woman empowerment.”

Poppy laughed, her face turning red. “Sorry if I was babbling. I often don’t realize I’m even doing it.” She said awkwardly, rubbing the nape of her neck. “Oh, that reminds me. I was unpacking boxes of books and I found something I think would be right up your alley. It’s about different sewing techniques and their histories. I think I picked it up from a library that was closing a few years ago.”

“And so then, I had to whip out my journal! I mean the fish was this big! How could I not record it? It’d be a waste, scientifically speaking.” Poppy threw her arms out, marking the size of the fish before opening her journal to show the recording. “Have you caught anything cool lately?”
