Rumination Week 16

This week's reading and lecture focused on the global impact that images can have and how that affects different aspects of life such as politics or social movements. I think the way the world is now, with everyone across the globe being able to send and receive messages almost instantaneously makes spreading messages and ideas complex. Soft power is one example of this, how countries and governments are easily able to spread their messages across borders with little to no resistance. This allows for images and cultural texts to be spread faster and wider than they had ever been able to before. However, what I think more interesting is the way technology advanced in other ways. The example that caught my eye in the lecture was the World Image. I can't fathom what it must've been like to see that image for the first time and have your entire world view be completely shifted from just one picture. The impact that visuals can have on not just individuals but whole communities is powerful, and this image in specific holds a lot of that power. Using such a powerful image that holds so much meaning to everyone on the planet makes for an impactful message.

Rumination Week 14

This week's reading and the focus on the connection between science and art was particularly interesting to me. The fascination of the human body and the all the science that goes on within is still very much prevalent today and the history of it is even more interesting. I think the unknown is something that people have always been fascinated in, so the human body during the time before progressive technology would've been a major point of spectacle. Especially as technology advanced and more was released about the science behind the human body, art and interest peaked. From that point, to today where we have all this information about the processes inside the body and all the new technology that gathers images, we are still fascinated with the processes, and the things we still don't know. Things like the Body Worlds exhibition displays that interest perfectly and allows humans to be in awe and curiosity of the art that is the science of the human body.

Rumination Week 13

The reading for this week was very interesting, as I knew very little about Obama Hope. The way the image spread so quickly and into so many different forms is really interesting to analyze and see the different outcomes of one person's image. I think the use of the image to demonstrate Obama's "failed" promises is the most interesting. It takes the image from it's original purpose of supporting Obama's campaign to doing the exact opposite. It uses their words and images against them without even doing much. They simply needed to change the word at the bottom of the image to demonstrate the failure they felt and it became political art for the opposite reason that it was political art in the first place. With the internet, images are so easily spread around and their meanings change. I think the concept of the death of the author applies very clearly here, as the creator of Obama Hope never wanted it to become what it became. He could've never known the image would become so popular and that people would use it against it's original purpose. Once the image is exposed to the public, the author loses control and ownership of it.

Rumination Week 12

This week's reading focused on postmodernity and remix. Postmodernity was discussed in length and was described as rejecting a universal truth. Parody and remix was discussed as being derived from postmodernity. Parody and remix were described as often reflecting back on an original text or piece of work, and this is known as pastiche. I found the conversation on objective truth very interesting, especially the discussion of opposites. For example, the opposite of progress being ruin. I think things definitely land on more of a scale rather than fitting into one category or another. The topic of remix and parody was interesting and especially the way it was used by postmodernist's to question original status. This was reminiscint of other chapters when we discussed things such as "elite status" and it was interesting to learn about a way that people in the postmodern era called that into question and parodied it.

P2P Activity #7

In the photo I took, the viewer can see a girl working on her laptop at a coffee shop. It's simple and mundane, something anyone could see when getting their morning coffee. However, if the angle of the camera was changed, the viewer would have a completely different perception of the studious girl. They would see that she was scrolling through Pinterest on her laptop and, contrary to their first belief, not getting any work done at all. This is an example of how the framing of photos can have major consequences on the context that people find in them. The perceived truth of my photo would be that the girl is working hard in the coffee shop, but once given the full context, that is not the truth at all.

about me

In these five photos you'll see many different versions of my life. The first photo showcases my wonderful roommates whom I spend majority of my time with and love. Both the first and second photos were taken in Savannah and show my love of traveling, especially to the beach! In the third photo I'm journaling about the last book I read (I love to read), and you can see my puppy hanging out with me in the background. The fourth photo might seem a little weird but it actually has to do with my love of all things spooky! That room is one I visited (while traveling) that is supposed to be haunted by a young girl. The final photo is probably my favorite and was taken when me and my mom got matching tattoos. My mom is my favorite person in the world and has shaped me into the person I am today.
