Neopagan vs Reconstructionist vs Revivalist
Recons do get credit for putting in the research and time to understand gods within their first known cultural contexts. But after you have that background, you grow *beyond* it and recognize gods as they exist here and now.
Hi yes this is how Reconstructionist work is actually supposed to be done.
The misunderstanding of Reconstructionist and Revivalist traditions is a problem that annoys me constantly. Especially since this idea that âthose evil recons are stuck in history and refuse to modernize and and and andâ has become so much more prevalent on Tumblr in the last few years.
The mentality itself honestly stems from several places.
Itâs one part age old Reconstructionist vs Revivalist posturing we canât seem to get over despite both of us doing the exact same thing- just a little to the left of one another;
one part well established Neopagan ârebelious toddlerâ mentality- complete with heavy emphasis on anti-intellectualism, and a dire hatred of academia, authority, rules, etc;
one part Paganismâs ever prevalent problem with refusing to accept the establishment of formal definitions for literally anything despite the fact that all of these things very clearly have intended uses and meanings, especially by the people coining them to begin with.
With a nice little dash of just the general fact that Recon and Revive paths are actually kind of rare comparative to the greater mainstream perception of Paganism, so hardly anyone knows they exist anyways- and when they do find out we exist they almost never bother actually going to the source for more details. They just get their info from whatever (usually Neopagan) rando introduced them to the concept- and their perceptions of what it is are most often wrong because of all of the above, therefore perpetuating the cycle.
Itâs annoying coming from Neopagans as is, but itâs particularly annoying coming from people who could reasonably be considered Revivalists- or who outright identify as such. Either wayâŚ. Itâs fucking annoying, and it needs to stop.Â
Fundamentally misunderstanding- or worse, outright refusing to understand- various methodologies doesnât do anyone any favors. And yes, these are methodologies, not actual religions in and of themselves. And frankly, thereâs a lot more fucking similarities between them than people think.
Iâve Said It Before - And Iâll Keep Saying It
Both Reconstructionists and Revivalists do pretty much the exact same thing by getting the pieces for their practices directly from the archaeological and historical (and other factually, academically based) records.
Both also modernize those pieces- because itâs literally impossible not to; you will always inevitably come up against barriers where old values are incompatible with modern ones. Or youâll hit places where there are holes and gaps in knowledge that require modification or filling. You canât get around these without modernizing.
But when it comes to the process of actually building and solidifying those practices, and turning them into a functioning modern (and modernized) religions? Reconstructionism and Revivalist rely on two different primary tools in order to do it- which can greatly affect the pace at which it is done.
70% of the time: Reconstructionism is doing as much as possible historically accurately- and Revivalism is doing it however you feel is right.
30% of the time: Reconstructionism is doing it however you feel is right- and Revivalism is doing as much as possible historically accurately.
People who do whatever the hell they feel like all the time are âReimaginistsâ Neopagans.
In Other Words
Reconstructionists are frequently slower and more methodical, allowing historical precedence to guide them, because Reconstructionism is history first.
Revivalists are frequently much quicker paced and lean more heavily on intuition over historical precedence, because Revivalism is intuition first.
âReimaginistsâ Neopagans just kind of make up their own shit âin the spirit ofâ whatever old shit they feel like cobbling togetherÂ
(which is, fun fact, exactly why Reconstructionist and Revivalist traditions were established in the first place: Because people got tired of the ahistorical eclecticism that makes up 99% of Neopagan faith and practice).
Unfortunately pace is usually where the main issue with Reconstructionism comes into play among Pagans; because Reconstructionists are much slower paced due to their methods, they donât see Reconstructionism as willing to modernize and move forward. Instead they see it as âstagnantâ and âstuck in the pastâ.
this certainly isnât helped by an incredibly small subsect of absolutely brain dead Recons who think that anything less than absolute perfection is against the rulesâ˘âŚ. But to see it as such is ultimately a willful misunderstanding of how both Reconstructionist and Revivalist paths work- and couldnât be further from the truth in regards to Reconstructionism.
If a Reconstructionist hasnât moved from the past into the present and begun attempting to understand these practices in relation to modern culture and landscapes? Then theyâre still stuck on the first half of the process.
If they outright refuse to do so, then theyâve straight up just failed to understand the entire purpose of Reconstructionist work in the first place. Because thatâs not how Reconstructionism is ultimately meant to work- and it never was.
If they act like anything less than absolute historical perfection is against the rulesâ˘Â theyâve also just straight up failed to understand Recon work. Also: Theyâre a fucking shitfuck and need to shut the fuck up and pull their ego out of their ass. Literally not even other Recons like these assholes.
So to put it short, simple, and sweet:
The only real, fundamental difference between a Reconstructionist and a Revivalist is their criteria for modernization, what primary tools they use to modernize, and the pace at which they do so because of those tools.
But To Reframe It More Practically
The Problem: The early Irish placed significant cultural and spiritual importance on being âbeautiful of faceâ, âbeautiful of formâ, and âwithout blemishâ.
Reconstructionism says: This is important but is clearly incompatible with modern ideology⌠So How can I make this compatible with modern ideology in a way that still retains the original emphasis on the physical?
Potential result: Reframed as Hygiene, Health, and Wellness.
Revivalism says: This was important but is clearly incompatible with modern ideology. So what can I incorporate into my practice thatâs potentially similar but is more compatible?
Potential Result: Reframed as Self Love and Body Positivity.
Both Revivalism and Reconstructionism came up against the exact same problem in the historical record. But they approached its modernization and adoption using two different methods (history vs intuition)- resulting in two different solutions / spiritual outcomes.
But Remember: Thereâs Overlap
There are times when a Revivalist may choose to use the first method (history) instead of their usual one. And there are definitely plenty of times Reconstructionists will use the second method (intuition) over the first.
What matters isnât that you only stick to only one method⌠But how frequently you tend to choose one method over the other.
If you find yourself taking the first path (history) more often, then youâre a Reconstructionist.
If you find yourself taking the second path (intuition) more often, then youâre a Revivalist.
And if you just donât really give a single fuck at all about any sort of history, or academia, or accuracyâŚ. Youâre probably a âReimaginistâ Neopagan.

Here youâll find links to each part of my manifesto on why druids should do some goddamn research for once.Â
This manifesto is a rebuttal of the âlessonsâ found here, that are full of problems. When the source is telling factual information I will acknowledge it for doing so- my goal here is not to launch a personal attack or accuse these sources of being part of an intentional misinformation campaign, but there are significant issues with each of the 20 âlessonsâ that Iâll be addressing. Each âlessonâ will be addressed in its own post so as to not make a post that stretches longer than âdo you love the color of the sky?â. Each of my rebuttals will have cited sources and my information comes from peer-reviewed research in the fields of folklore studies, anthropology, archaeology, literature, and history.Â
As I want my rebuttals to focus on the content of the âlessonsâ Iâm using this introductory space to also mention that these âlessonsâ contain numerous grammatical errors and typos- I say this now so that those reading my posts know that I am not ignoring their inability to proofread, but have rather chosen to focus on the content rather than the quality of the text.Â

A Magicianâs Rite of Holy Water
Supplies
~Â Â Â Â Purified Warm Water
~Â Â Â Â Organic Salt (sourced from the ground)
~Â Â Â Â Stirring Utensil
~Â Â Â Â Two Bowls
~Â Â Â Â A Vessel for the Holy Water
~Â Â Â Â Incense
 Operation
Declare your intention as you see fit or make this declaration:
âI come before the earthly spirits, the angels, the Holy Spirit, the Son our Messiah, and our Father the Lord of the Universe to purify these gifts of water and salt and empower them with Light. I do this out of Agape and the need for the intervention of the Most High. Before all those high and low this rite begins!âÂ
Perform the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram. Next, take your incense towards each direction to banish and consecrate each side of your circle moving clockwise:
âIn the East, I banish all beings of the air vile and malignant wishing to interrupt this work and may Light only enter herein.
In the South, I banish all beings of fire vile and malignant wishing to interrupt this work and may Light only enter herein.
In the West, I banish all beings of water vile and malignant wishing to interrupt this work and may Light only enter herein.
In the North, I banish all beings of earth vile and malignant wishing to interrupt this work and may Light only enter herein.â
Now back in the western part of your circle facing East bow your head with hands in a sign of prayer fingers pointing out walk around your work altar 9 times clockwise while saying:
âHoly, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come!â
Perform the Lesser Invoking Ritual of the Pentagram. Now evoke the Holy Spirit:
âOâ Most Holy Spirit, from you all of man may know the wisdom of the Lord. Come, I humbly pray. Come and witness this rite. Be my benefactor in this holy work and find joy in it. I ask You, Most Clean Spirit, humbly with the love of Christ residing within my heart. Come down from your heavenly abode and radiate your Grace upon within this circle. Amen.â
In separate bowls place the salt and water. Hover your hands above the salt while reciting this exorcism (vibrate the names in all caps):
âThe blessing of ABBA SHADDAI be upon this creature of salt and let all corruption and hindrance be cast-out henceforth, and let Light enter herein; for without You man cannot live, and You formed man from this humble element. I bless and evoke GIBOR ADONAI that You may aid me. AMEN.â
Cross the salt as you vibrate âAMEN.â
Now with your hands hovering over the water recite this exorcism (vibrating again all names in caps):
âI exorcise you, creature of water by YOD HE VAU HE Who created you and gathered you together into one place so that the dry land appeared, that you may uncover all the deceits of the enemy and He cast out from you all the impurities and the uncleanliness of the Spirits of the World of Phantasm so you may harm none, through the Virtue of EL SHADDAI, His Son YESHUA, and RUACH HAKODESH; Who reigns forevermore, AMEN.â
Cross the water as you vibrate âAMEN.â
Pour the exorcised salt into the exorcised water. Calling down the Light of the Holy Spirit, stir the mixture clockwise while reciting Psalm 118:14-24 (no vibration):
âThe Lord is my strength and my song;
 he has given me victory.
Songs of joy and victory are sung in the camp of the godly.
The strong right arm of the Lord has done glorious things!
The strong right arm of the Lord is raised in triumph.
The strong right arm of the Lord has done glorious things!
I will not die; instead, I will live
to tell what the Lord has done.
The Lord has punished me severely,
but he did not let me die.
Open for me the gates where the righteous enter,
and I will go in and thank the Lord.
These gates lead to the presence of the Lord,
 and the godly enter there.
I thank you for answering my prayer
 and giving me victory!
The stone that the builders rejected
 has now become the cornerstone.
This is the Lordâs doing,
and it is wonderful to see.
This is the day the Lord has made.
We will rejoice and be glad in it.â
When the salt is mostly dissolved into the water pour the mixture into the vessel you chose for the Holy Water, hover your hands over it, and recite The Lordâs Prayer,
âOur Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive our trespassers.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.
AMEN.â
As you vibrate âAMENâ cross the saltwater.
Take the now Holy Water going in a clockwise motion starting in the east consecrating your space once again:
âBlessings in the East may all goodly spirits of air enter herein.
Blessings in the South may all goodly spirits of fire enter herein.
Blessings in the West may all goodly spirits of water enter herein.
Blessings in the North may all goodly spirits of earth enter herein.â
Go back to the western part of your circle, place the Holy Water back on the altar, and then walk around the altar counterclockwise head bowed with hands in prayer adoring the Lord of the Universe:
âHoly, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come!â
License the Holy Spirit and all other beings invited to depart and then perform the LBRP once again. Now declare that the ritual is over in your way or recite this:
âTo all beings above and below, to the North, East, South, and West my ritual is now done. My circle is undone in the right manner. I have fulfilled my will and all doors are closed. So be it done!â

Julietâs Transition Fund â¨
(all hyperlinks direct to my ko-fi page)
Hi all!
My name is Juliet, I am a 23 year old transgender girl and I absolutely need to move along in my transition for my mental stability.
My next biggest step which I need as soon as possible is to start Hormone Replacement Therapy. Iâm still working out the logistics of that such as where I would be getting them, the probability of a therapistâs note, etc.
Because of that, I would like to save up as much money as I can into a long term transition fund that I could dip into for help! Every dollar in that fund would go exclusively towards my transition and nothing else, unless Iâm in a life threatening emergency.
I really hate asking for money, so Iâm simply leaving this here in case anybody would like to donate to a trans girl who could use the help!
Please do not donate if you need the money for yourself or your family. Prioritize your health and safety. Feel free to signal boost, but feel no obligation đâ¨

Hyakinthos Introduction + Resources
Ah, Hyakinthos. He is mostly remembered in his mortal form, but in mythology he becomes deified after he is resurrected. He is a deity in my personal cultus, one who is enamouring and frustrating in terms of knowledge. I simply wish to know more. Anyways, letâs start:
HyakinthosÂ
God & Divine Functions
VegetationÂ
Tied to summerÂ
Other Aspects found in worship & epithets:
Tied to Hyperborean Apollo and spring
Decay & Renewal of nature Â
New saplings in spring that are killed by the sunÂ
Initiation into adulthood
Tied to mourning and sadness - possibly grief.
He is chthonic.
First thing to note about Hyakinthos is that he didnât become the Hyacinth. The most likely flower is actually the larkspur. The Hyacinth flower is simply named after him.Â
He is an incredibly mysterious deity. He represents the saplings from spring that are killed off by the summerâs heat and the decay and renewal of nature.Â
Hyakinthosâs worship antiquity is intertwined with Apollon, especially with his festival the Hyacinthia. The festival further highlights a connection to summer.
Swans are tied to Hyakinthos. Myth states that Apollon gifted a chariot of swans to Hyakinthos. The association with swans creates close connection to Hyperborean Apollo and spring. Itâs suggested that Hyacinthus spends the winter months in the underworld, or more suitably Hyperborea and then returning to earth in the spring when his flower blooms.Â
Hyakinthos is simply a mystery, through and through. Iâd recommend learning about the Hyacinthia to further understand him. Iâd also recommend reading every bit of his resource pages - Hyakinthos is mysterious, but complex and deep. Heâs got so much to him we simply donât know. I hope one day, that more will be uncovered.

Hellenic Chakras
I was interested in seeing if the Ancient Greeks had a system of chakras, Iâll refer to them as centers throughout the rest of this post, similar to the Hindus and Buddhists. I found this interesting essay by John Opsopaus, The Parts of The Soul: A Greek System of Chakras, and how in Platoâs Timaeus, he notes the existence of various energy points in the body, although he did not name them outright. I think it is interesting enough, so Iâd like to bring this to a wider audience.
Platoâs Theory of the Soul
Before we get talking about the various centers, we must first talk about Platoâs theory of the soul. He believes the soul is made of the logos (logic, the mind, and reason), thymos (emotion, passion, and aggression), and epithymia (appetite, sexual desire, and desire). Logos resides in the head, thymos resides in the chest, and the epithymia is located in the stomach.
Koruphe
The first center, koruphe, relates to the crown of the head, governs the connection to the divine, and is also the first part of the soul dedicated to the logos. Plato believed that humans stood upright because the koruphe gravitates towards the heavens. It was also believed that one who had great intellect, a nimbus (a halo of flames) would form around their head. Thus, this is associated with the Sahasrara.
Enkephalos
The second center, enkephalos, relates to the brain, the psyche, and is the second part of the soul dedicated to the logos. As the hair is believed to emanate from the psyche, it makes sense why the enkephalos resides in the brain. It also controls rational thought, and is believed that the enkephalos governs and controls all the lower centers. Thus, this is associated with the Ajna.
Trachelos
The third center, trachelos, relates to the neck, communication and purity, and is the first part of the soul dedicated to the thymos. It acts as a bridge between the logos (the immortal soul) and the thymos (the mortal soul). The trachelos allows communication between the logos and the other two parts of the soul, but also acts as a purifier between the logos and the others, as to prevent them from polluting the logos. Thus, this is associated with the Visuddha.
Phrenes
The fourth center, phrenes, relates to the heart, the seat of the thymos, and is the second part of the soul dedicated to the thymos. As the thymos is especially related to the heart and the lungs (the pnuema, or the Spirit), it is no wonder the phrenes is located here. Emotions and feelings are generated here, but especially anger. The feeling mind is located here, thus it is the opposite of the enkephalos. Thus, this is associated with the Anahata.
Under the phrenes is the midriff partition, which separates the two parts of the Mortal Soul, as the lower three centers relates to the body and desire.
Gaster
The fifth center, gaster, relates to the stomach, the Fire element, and is the first part of the soul dedicated to the epithymia. We share this center and the lower two with animals, relating to the more primal and body needs. The gaster is also known as the Appetitive Soul, as this is where all appetite and desire (both nutritional and sexual) comes from. The Fire element resides here also, allowing digestion in the process of pepsis (which I might cover in a later post). Thus, this is associated with the Manipura.
Gonades
The sixth center, gonades, relates to the genitalia, life, and is the second part of the soul dedicated to the epithymia. This center is considered where the Soul meets the Body. This is where the desire for life and procreation comes from, and where life is formed. The Ancient Greeks also believed that semen was a spiritual essence brought from the enkephalos to create new life. Thus, this is associated with the Svadhisthana.
Hieron Osteon
The seventh and final center, hieron osteon, relates to the base of the spine, survival instincts, and is the third part of the soul dedicated to the epithymia. This is where all of our primal survival instincts come from. Itâs where we cling on to life and resort to when we are close to death. Thus, this is associated with the Muladhara.
Other Centers
While not major centers, it is believed that there was a higher concentration of the spiritual sap at the hands, knees, thighs, and chest.
What to Take From This
I think this can be very helpful in trying to avoid cultural appropriation of closed off cultures and religions. Plus, Iâd like to see more development in the Hellenic centers, as there isnât any correspondences for each center, besides the organ its associated with. (Plato did not go into depth on any of them, and only had minor notes of each one.) This can also be used in Ancient Greek medicine, which I also plan to go more in-depth.
Iâm very interested in seeing what yâall will use with this!
