What is afforded by a website like Ask.fm

Anonymity. People can post questions for the user to answer without no notification of who asked the question. This has caused conflict in some situations because bullying has become easier over this specific platform, and it has led to suicides in some cases of extreme bullying.

Ease of use. The platform is easy to use and allows for customization of the page to fit the personality of the owner.

For this assignment I opened a random ask.fm account and asked by friends to post random questions or things that came to mind. In response I also answered with things that came to my mind naturally as well. I kind of free wrote some random stanzas.

Conceptual Arists #2

Dan Graham is a very interesting conceptual artist that I stumbled upon while browsing through Wikipedia. The most striking thing about him is the different mediums he uses to show conceptual art. He builds structures, he makes films, and he takes photography’s. Much of his work seems to deal with a futurism of some sort since his structures. He also works with very strange elements in his art like isolation on various levels. He has a fascination with mirrored structures, which I find very interesting because the concept of reflection can be interpreted many different ways. Overall he was very influenced by architecture from the work of Michael Asher, Larry Bell, and Robert Mangold just to name a few.

In one of his works titled Roll he captures a film in black and white of a man frantically rolling back and forth in a closed room. This concept of isolation is shown frame by frame in this conceptual piece as the man is shown in various positions sprawled around the room as if trying to seek an escape. This idea of entrapment is illustrated through the frame by frame presentation and in this way it affords the artist a sense of time in addition to the concept of being trapped.

In another one of his works Two-Way Mirror Punched Steel Hedge Labyrinth there is a two way mirror containing a family. The concepts I would imagine he is working with is maybe the two way nature of our sight, we can see out but something can see in. I feel like it is also working with the concepts of preset boundaries in society that may seem transparent, almost in a sense a false freedom.

The concepts Dan Graham works with is very interesting because he uses architecture to deliver these concepts. The concepts are expressed differently when tried to be expressed through architecture. Using architecture affords the author of taking a more constructed organized approach to getting at a concept.

Reflection

  I found this conceptual art project to be quite challenging. I found it difficult to generate a large amount of material that was required by the exercises. I did however miss how a camera felt in my hands since I haven’t had the time to go out and shoot for a long time. My favorite piece I did was the photography of “Girls Toys and Boys Toys”, this conceptualizes the gender binary nature of toy choice and preference. I tried to think outside the box, and the found the answer actually in a box in my basement when I was rummaging around for inspiration.

I tried doing a collage turning the “mapping” exercise into a literal project where I printed out different maps and just glued them to a piece of paper. Thinking outside of the box was a skill that was strengthened during these exercises. Finally, for my parameter assignment I took a stroll through hash bash and for every marijuana t-shirt or accessory I saw I would begin to write what came to mind. I ended up with a jumbled mess of words that almost seemed like it could be turned into a rap since the words revolved around drugs and money.

Overall it was a good weekend because I really enjoyed getting back into photography.

Girl Toys and Boy Toys (Conceptual Art)

Conceptual Artist!!

The conceptual artist I want to explore is Joseph Kosuth. He is an American born conceptual artist but what fascinates me the most about him is that he traveled the world to get inspired for his conceptual art. Another aspect of him that piqued my interest and linked him to my own Belgian heritage is that he studied under a famous Belgian painter by the name of Line Bloom Draper.

His most famous work is called One and Three Chairs, in this conceptual art piece there are three chairs, one is a photograph of a chair, one is an actual chair, and then the other is simply an enlarged definition of a chair. I really like this conceptual art piece because it’s really getting out the different ways a concept can be presented. This piece seems to exist at the intersection of visual (photographic), verbal (dictionary definition), and the material (the actual chair). This approach is interesting because it can be applied to a variety of other concepts and can be used to help unravel what a concept is.

In another work titled water this concept of what language means is explored. He tries to get at a specific definition of water but seems to be shaping the overall concept of what we perceive water to be. He shows through his art that water is wet, otters live in water, and then he also breaks the concept of water down into its respective elements and takes a chemistry spin on it. He gives its forms (rain etc.), and then factoid about when it boils and freezes. I really enjoy this piece of art because it’s simple and really shows the complexity of a concept and how sometimes we overlook how really complex something is. Water is all around us but we don’t stop to think what specific things shape our mental representation and concept of what water actual is.

I really enjoy the work of Joseph Kosuth for his approach to take something seemingly simple that most people take for granted, but then he turns it on its head and shows how sometimes simple things operate on complex concepts.

So this is going off of Sophie's post about her new idea with the second tumblr. I wanted to try something similar but with a different concept. So the concept here is showing how strange it would be if we talked to ourselves via text message and it also speaks out against this kind of mindless we get when we use technology.
