This holiday home in Rhode Island by US studio Roger Ferris + Partners consists of a cluster of gable-roofed volumes, influenced by vernacular architecture in rural New England. The ‘Ocean House’ is located on a coastal site in the quaint town of Little Compton.

Beautiful example of portal frame concept. Here the distances between the frames are longer, so the load bearing frames must be stronger. Dimensions for the timber columns/rafters are bigger or glue-laminated timber could be used. The most crucial joint between column and rafter is bolted steel plate.

Examples of interior views. Because portal frame system is rigid in its plane, the end walls of the building don’t need walls for stability and could be left open and filled only with glass.

Last one has visible horizontal steel tension ties in the ceiling level. They would be unnecessary with the 3 hinge portal frame system.

Hi,

As an introduction, here is how i see portal frame buildings from engineering point of view.

This is a nice example of one small minimalist house/cabin.

The main constructive bearing elements should be timber frames: rafters and columns connected with steel nailing plates.

And to design the dimensions of timber frame and connector plates, the whole building comes down to one simple structural system - three hinged portal frame.

I’ll try to analyze most of the cool cottages and houses, i’ll find from the other blogs, like that. How could them all be built using timber portal frames.
