Mama Claire
My mom died on May 3, 2018. That was five years ago. Noong namatay siya, si Tatay lang ang kasama niya. Pinauwi kami ni Tatay, even if she was clearly on her deathbed. It still hurts. I can still feel her. I don't talk to her, but she echoes in my mind. It's a strong presence that reverberates like background noise from the TV. You know it's there, you can hear it, even if you don't know what it is. I have let go of her, knowing that her memory will not let go of me. I am okay with that. I think until the very end, she was tempestuous, feisty, and crazy. Lovingly crazy. I wish I can be as crazy when I reach her age. There are a few deaths that linger. I'm trying to smile, I will smile tomorrow. I will have fun tomorrow. I will be happy.
From Ghost Image by Hervé Guibert, 2014. We are reminded of our own project about photographs that conjure ghosts: The Ghost in the [Scanning] Machine.
““Photographs are not innocent.” Guibert writes in one of the most provocative essays in Ghost Image, a collection of critical and autobiographical writings on photography translated for the first time into English by Robert Bononno. “They influence and…betray what is hidden beneath the skin. They weave not only lines and grids, but plots, and they cast spells….They are an impressionable material that welcomes spirits.”

I had to share this.
It's been a while since I last painted. I use oil pastels in my drawings. It's not easy to get back to drawing. It's tough trying to get motivated.
But I'm getting there.
I bought the oil pastels. I have a sketchbook. Several sketchbooks. And I'm slowly getting you the rhythm of painting with pastels.
