Matthew is never far from trouble – the naughty to his sister’s nice. The problem with Matthew? A simple question of space-time, certainly. He's never in the right place, at the right time. It's true that he's never far away when things go wrong.
Educated, he gallantly takes the blame without contestation and is mildly surprised to cause such a nuisance for the actions of his delightful twin sister, Flora. And so he contemplates the sky, a dandelion, or a muddy gate for hours, to forget the latest bother with Nanny. He really can’t remember putting dead frogs in her bed, but if Flora says he did, why argue…?”. Matthew is used to taking the blame for sister Flora's mischief, for he knows they have roles. Is it deserved? Well, he isn't exactly innocent.
His father was born just a year too late to win the title of heir. Cousin to the great, late Lord George, his shot at the title was lost a year before his birth. If he wants a shot at the seat, he’ll have to clear up his name first.
Mathew is wary, at best. Still, he can use all the help he can get if he’s going to clean up his reputation. But can he do so without damning his sister? The voice of Lord George doesn’t seem to think so.
Flora: Two sides of the same coin, though others wouldn’t necessarily agree. She gets all the praise while he takes all the blame. It’s always been that way, and Mathew has simply learned to shrug it off. It’s always been harmless, hasn’t it?
Beaureguard- Situational friends. While they never went as far as to make calls or write letters, they could always be found at each other's sides during events and long summers at the Penhaligon Estate. There has been a bit of distance over the years; Mathew assumes it’s his own reputation keeping Beauregard at arm's length.
