Welcome to my language portfolio. Here I have a collection of activities and reflections from my journey in Portuguese class this semester. I started taking Portuguese in August of 2019, and now in April of 2020 I am finishing my second class. This blog is where I will post all of my progress and work. This class and my course last semester were called “Portuguese for Spanish Speakers”, and they took my knowledge of Spanish and applied it to learning Portuguese. This was both easier and much harder than I thought it would be. In some ways, things went very quickly and picking up vocabulary was like second nature. Other times, it was very difficult to switch from my Spanish pronunciation and grammar to the similar-yet-different Portuguese rules. I often found myself speaking what my teacher would call “portuñol”, a mix of Spanish and Portuguese which both hurt my brain and my grades sometimes. But by the second semester, I was having an easier time and now I look for opportunities to practice instead of avoiding it. After getting over my initial apprehension, I have had a great time learning this new language. I am starting to watch a Netflix show about a Bossa Nova café in Portuguese and I making a playlist on Spotify with all the new Brazilian songs I find. I have set up this blog with links to explore the different types of activities this semester: Reading, Writing, and Speaking, as well as a page of additional materials I used. In that tab you will find some songs that I listened to and some videos that I thought were interesting. Feel free to explore those tabs or simply keep scrolling to see all of my posts. Speaking

My journey this semester was interesting. I found different challenges in writing, speaking and listening. Like most language learners, I found speaking to be the most daunting. In class we recorded several videos to practice our speaking. It was challenging to fill up three minutes worth of content at first because I felt like I had a limited vocabulary. I ended up writing out talking points and then practicing once or twice before making the videos. This way, I knew what I planned to talk about and if it was enough to fill up the time. Doing this helped me learn how to keep a sustained conversation in Portuguese. If I had to speak to somebody now, I think I would be more comfortable speaking for a long time. Talking about my future was more challenging than talking about the past or my family. In the video Meu Futuro I had to put a lot of thought into how to conjugate the future tense. This is still tricky for me because I am not sure when things are imperfect or conditional. Practicing this did help, but this semester was also challenging because we were online and had less in-person practice after spring break, so I think that is where I have the biggest knowledge gap still. I am more comfortable talking about the present or the simple future.

Writing

When writing, I found it a lot easier to collect my thoughts and my work sounded much more polished than impromptu speaking. The hardest part of writing, and something I wish I had spent a bit more time on, was knowing where to put accents. To double check my work and be able to put accent marks on things I was not sure about, I started typing in Portuguese and then translating it to English and back translating again to get the accents in the right spot. After a few times with this, simple sentences became easier and I recognized where the accents would go. Still, this proved to be much more difficult than I expected. In Spanish, I can hear where the accents should go most of the time. In Portuguese this is the case for ç and ão usually but the accents such as ê, à, and á were much more difficult to figure out. I still do not have an internal sense of where they belong and many of my assignments came back with accent corrections. I think with more practice and more reading in Portuguese, this will come more naturally.

Listening and Reading

Listening and reading in Portuguese was much easier than I thought it would be for many assignments. The listening assignments online were usually very clear and slow, so it was easy to understand. I think hearing several different people speak helped me understand how to pronounce things better. When we watched videos of locals speaking in class, there was always one woman who I could not understand. She had a different accent than the others and was very different from my professor and I had trouble understanding a word she was saying. I think it would be interesting to travel to Portuguese speaking countries to see how well I understand people. I know that people speaking Brazilian Portuguese slowly would be the easiest. I would have to try a lot harder to understand European Portuguese, for example, because I really never practiced with that. What is nice to know, though, is that I can read fairly well. Knowing another romance language, Portuguese is pretty easy to read because you can ignore the accent differences and just look at the words that are similar. If I traveled to Portugal, for example, I think I would try to read as much as possible to get by.

Other Materials I used

Throughout the semester I listened to music and watched videos to practice Portuguese. These are some of my favorite ways to learn and it is easier to make myself practice with these in my free time rather than something like practice quizzes or reading. It is a lot easier to just play songs in the background while I work or put on a YouTube video in between assignments. This way when I was not doing class assignments, I still felt like I was keeping up on my Portuguese. I also learned a lot of new words from this because there are things that do not pop up in our typical vocabulary lists that are more common in songs. I felt like I was learning more everyday or popular language and seeing more actual people who spoke Portuguese. This motivated me to want to learn because I saw more of the real-world connection outside of class. I kept motivated by thinking about the new shows I could watch or new songs I could understand if I got better at Portuguese. There were a lot of things that were difficult for me when learning Portuguese, but I was more motivated to learn when I looked at things like this. I struggled learning how to pronounce things or feeling comfortable speaking but singing along to songs or repeating what I heard in videos helped with that and I feel much more comfortable speaking now.

When I find other interesting things about Brazilian or Portuguese culture (recipes, grammar, travel tips,etc) I add them to my Portuguese Pinterest board. My goal is to travel to a Portuguese-speaking country and practice speaking!

I listened to a few of these podcasts for class activities. Afterward, I went back and listened to the rest because they were interesting. They talk about protest music in Brazil, and other movements such as tropicália and funk.

Writing Assignment #5

Para minha última tarefa de escrita, escrevi um parágrafo dizendo o que aprendi neste semestre na aula de português.

Eu aprendi muito na aula de portugues. No começo, foi dificil falar em portugues e eu disse muitas coisas em espanhol. Tive que aprender a pronunciar palavras como responsável e amável. O que foi mais dificil foi pronunciar avó e avô. A gramática e um puoco dificil tambem mas meu espanhol me ajudou muito. O subjuntivo foi difícil no começo, mas foi mais fácil depois da practica.Gostaria de ter aprendido mais canções porque gosta de música brasileira. Vou continuar aprendendo portugues porque gosto de praticar outras línguas. Gostei de aprender sobre os países lusofonos como Brasil e Portugal. Meu capítulo favorito foi na semana passada, quando aprendemos sobre o meio ambiente. Obrigada por um semestre fantástico, eu aprendi muito! Tchau!
