I sort of felt sick to my stomach on the way there. Twiddling with the gold ring with the tips of my fingers, dancing on the cool shininess. A car picked me up from the airport and I slumped inside, toying at the zipper of my backpack.Â

âhow did you know?â I laughed
âI could sense itâ he laughed friendly back.
âoh urrrrâ I started âdo you know where..â I unfolded Tomâs note and started reading the address he jotted for me. âla rue de luxure?â
âagh oui, that is more down in ze town, by the huge abandoned cinema de ovaleâ
âthanks, I mean merciâ I grinned.
âIâm pierreâ he nodded
â(y/n)â I muttered softly back.
Pierre pulled up into the driveway of a gated community by the beach. The automatic doors opened all the way to reveal a long golden line of huge houses. I already felt out of place.Â
âmerciâ I smiled, hopping out the car as Pierre lifted the shiny door open. He hoisted out my bag and then dragged it over the cobbled ground. It was around lunch time, my stomach growled and gurgled.Â
âhere we areâ Pierre huffed, he smiled round at me and then we waved each other goodbye.
âoh (y/n) how lovely to see you!â Stanâs Mum Pamela wrapped her skinny tanned arms around me as she pulled the door open. Her blonde hair tickling my neck. âHow was the flight?â
âgreat actually!â I laughed, pulling my bag inside. The house already smelt fresh.Â
âwell come in come in, Stan and his father just went out to play some tennis they will be back for lunch soon! Can I get you anything?âÂ
âIâm starved!â We both laughed and chatted away as she prepared a cheese sandwich for me. I munched on it as she told me all about the place we were staying.
â...of course he wanted servants and I said no! I want to do things myself on this holiday!â she hummed, she brushed down her crisp light blue dress. She had a thread of perfectly sculpted pearls on her neck. âyou best go change I think they will be coming soon, I like your necklace!â
âoh thank youâ I grinned, cradling Stan's necklace in my hand
âno, no not the one Stanley gifted you the other one, the goldâ she pointed and my heart dropped. Little did she know it was Tomâs.
âthanksâ I hummed.
Later on I hoisted my bag up the stairs to my room I was sharing with Stan. He had already neatly spread out his things. I packed away my new clothes in the drawers and stared over at Stan's crisp shirts and shorts laid out everywhere. His shiny Rolex chucked carelessly on the chest of drawers. My hands shook when I laid every one of my items down, almost too scared I would mess something up or make something dirty.Â
A slam of the front door made my stomach shake.Â
âHi!â Stan called
âshitâ I whispered, pulling myself together. I heard him and his Dad fire up a conversation with Pamela in the kitchen as I rapidly changed out of my slouched clothes. I stepped into my red playsuit with small pockets at either hip. I brushed out my knots and tied my hair back into a sleek half up half down.
â(y/n)?â I heard Stan mutter from the hall
âcoming!â I shouted back pulling on some white tennis shoes.
âhow have you beenâ he whispered into my scalp as we both hugged. His warm skin against mine somehow comforted me. His body was so manipulative to my mind, at every touch I felt like he was a good person. âdad wants to see youâ
My heart raced at the thought. Stan's dad was so prim and proper. His clothes were always so neatly ironed and steamed, his Rolex and Cartier rings danced on his fingers and wrist. I nodded as I pulled out of his embrace. We started down the shiny, tiled stairs and down into the kitchen at the far end of the hall.Â
âah yes (y/n)â Stan's dad announced huskily, coming over and kissing my cheek politely. I grinned awkwardly. His name was Hunter, he was the richest in town, owner of the biggest country club in the state. Born into a rich aristocrat family. His list of money and achievements was what separated his family and me.Â
ânice to see you sirâ
âplease, call me Hunterâ he smirked. He was the type of flirty guy in his mid-40â˛s who would flirt with all the maids and waitresses he came across. He somehow had something in his eyes that lured people in, the same thing that Stan had but his was more of an underlying glimmer.Â
Somehow Stan managed to drag me upstairs and away from awkward parental conversation and to our room.Â
âstop Stan your parents are gonna come inâ he started to nip at my neck as I looked out at the beautiful view through our curtains.
âshhhâ he replied huskily âI haven't seen you in so longâ
âa night really isn't that longâ I retorted, he somehow grabbed my waist forcefully and twisted me around. We started kissing up against the wall. It didn't feel right at all so I pulled away and started laughing softly.
âcome on Stan, laterâ
âfineâ he huffed and my heart was relieved.Â
Later on we all went out for dinner, my hand slipped into Stanâs as we happily strutted down the promenade, my heels clacking against the slats of wood.Â
âisn't it prettyâ he nodded down to the beach
âveryâ I smiled softly at all the little children splashing around under the golden sunset.Â
Hunter and Pamela booked us at this very expensive brasserie overlooking the sea. We all sat and immediately dived into conversation.Â
âso (y/n) you live on the other side of town?â Hunter spat
âyeahâ I nodded awkwardly
ânext door to-â
âthe Holland'sâ i replied almost sternly, he stared up in almost shock.
âthat family I-â hunter started, Pamela grabbed his arm and hushed him down.
ânot at the tableâ she hummed in his ear. I could feel Stanâs awkwardness tense up. âso what are we all having?â she asked as the waitress approached.Â
âIâll have the watermelon gazpacho and the sirloin steakâ Stan smiled over at me, folding up his menu.
âIâll also have the steak and the pea soupâ I grinned at the waitress.
âI would like-â Pamela glazed her eyes over her menu
âwe will both have the escargots and the steamed asparagusâ Hunter rudely interrupted âand Champagnes all aroundâ he smirked at the waitress then as she turned around slapped her arse. I could see Pamela tense up with anger. The waitress didn't even turn around, she just carried on walking, like she was used to it.
Later that night I waited for Stan to go to sleep and pulled out some paper and the address Tom got me. I perched on the toilet seat of our glassy ensuite bathroom and used the sink to rest on.
Tom,
I miss you and France is a bore. I didn't know about your feelings at all but now I do I realise mine. I know that you probably think Stan is my guy but really I have been having doubts since that night you came over for dinner. We don't share morals at all and his family are sickening. It pains me to know you are locked away because of him, and it pains me more knowing Iâm not going to see you for so long. I really love you Tom and I know this is all fast but I realised that you are the only person I want to be with.

I tucked the letter under my suitcase in the corner and shoved the address there too. I snuggled down next to Stan and his arm snaked around me. He breathed heavily in my ear my I felt sick to my stomach and the sound.Â
