volunteering was a constant part of kate’s life. she had started young, put into small groups by her church to help out the community before she could even remember. even now it was something she continued. it had started as something she was required to do, by her community and family, but as she got older kate continued to get involved by her own choice. today she was out in the main area of town, standing outside of a cafe, donation jar in hands. it wasn’t her favorite thing to do. kate preferred to plan projects, create toiletry bags of the homeless, make lunches for those who didn’t have them, anything that didn’t require talking to people. still, this was important, and she had to push past her shyness for it. seeing a person approaching she sucked in a quick breath, face slightly red as she went to talk to them. “would you like to donate to the lost boys home? any amount would help.” she said, holding out her collection jar. “or um if you’re interested i’m planning some weekend activities to do with the younger kids there. a few other volunteers would be great. they love to see new faces.but only if you want of course.i know a lot of people have busy schedules so….it’s fine if you’d rather not.” man she couldn’t help but wish there were more people interested in helping, other people who could do jobs like this so she could play to her strengths instead of standing outside being awkward.
