Why the hell are stupid memetic posts more popular than the actual critical thinking I do on this goddamn blogging site, why is a fucking red hot chili peppers hate quote more popular than thoughts on the state of education today? This is a garbage platform and we all know it. Idfc if I lose followers or gain them.

Observation thoughts
How can you properly manage a classroom without resorting to disciplinary action that takes students out of the classroom? It’s obvious kids aren’t stupid, they struggle with studying and learning and accepting a teacher’s authority for different reasons. The education system is designed largely to socialize young people and prepare them for a system of labor and civil obedience. Adolescence is a period of (I think rightful, maybe not righteous) perpetual contempt for authority. However, access to knowledge and education should (maybe?) come with some form of structure and discipline for students to absorb information and be socialized to participate in a system without becoming ostracized but also with the awareness and agency to change the system that confines them. There are also, of course, the problems of economy, bureaucracy, a person’s own emotional limits, etc. as an educator. For the student herself, class, race, gender, sexuality, etc. limit the impact of education. What can a lone instructor do with what they have to create a curriculum and classroom management practices that reach out not only to students that easily conform, but the ones that resist the most and regularly struggle with learning? I understand the knee-jerk reaction of instructors to resort to things like referrals. Call me altruistic, but I simply cannot believe in the idea of ignoring the need of a student if there is room for more effort or positive intervention by the educator.

Having the same prof for two classes can cause some pretty intense confusion, today I was convinced I was missing the final essay prompt for 300 because of class observations, when really I need the prompt for 388, which I am not missing. I could've used the 30 minutes to eat :/ Now I have 15 to get something in my stomach and survive the third round of the exact same 2 hour class (while skipping ancient history again for observations), write my last response for some reading in 388 and then get my final prompt, pick up my new bass speaker and go to band practice. I'm in the home stretch for the quarter. I'm perpetually tired and busy but I feel good.

My parents haven't always gotten along with other Argentineans living in Southern California. They had a couple of core social groups but long distances, fallings out, or sometimes more terrible circumstances have destroyed what little connection I have to the Argentine diaspora. There aren't many of us and not all of us get along, for the same reasons we wouldn't have gotten along back in Argentina. The common experience of immigration and our national identity binds us, but little else. At least it's something.
The closest semblance to someone who shared my experience, my best friend from age nine, moved back to Buenos Aires a few years ago. We see each other, rarely, but with his parents likely moving back as well, it'll be a long time before we see each other again. He's the only person I know who shared something very similar to what I lived. We grew up basically as surrogate cousins. We don't talk often, but we don't always need to. He won't be here for Christmas this year. It's going to be hard.
I am conscious of myself and become myself only while revealing myself for another, through another, and with the help of another. The most important acts constituting self-consciousness are determined by a relationship toward another consciousness. The very being of man (both external and internal) is the deepest communion. To be means to communicate; to be means to be for another, and through the other, for oneself. A person has no internal sovereign territory, he is wholly and always on the boundary: looking inside himself, he looks into the eyes of another. I cannot manage without another. I cannot become myself without another. I must find myself in another by finding another in myself (in mutual reflection and mutual acceptance).
Mikhail Bakhtin, Theory of Socialization (via mama-panther)
All I see are slivers of people in me, chopped up little pieces of others I've internalized and made into some collage. It feels false, like something that doesn't actually exist. Yet, I know it's mine, I know it's me. I just wish I could see something more...I don't know. Whole?
I grow frustrated with the identity of hodgepodge American culture immigrants are left to construct, those of us who left too young to hang on to a home that no longer exists in the present are effectively socialized in our mother culture by our immigrant families at home. It's like watching the same VHS over and over again, without having a contemporary perspective you can experience firsthand. Yeah, some of my friends keep me in the loop a little bit, but I live here, not there.
Soy Argentino, pero de memoria, nomás. Who the fuck am I? Who are my people? Why do I just feel like a bunch of parts instead of one whole and, maybe worse, why does that hurt so bad?
Everyone really ought to watch this video. Even if you consider yourself well-versed in power relations, class struggle, and the politicized state of education, this video is a nice summary of it all and put together the same questions I ask myself often. Just a great way of putting it all together.
