“3 plus 4” - El Ten Eleven
Album: Every Direction Is North
I like to describe this song as upbeat, energetic, walking post-rock. Came on my ipod during an entire-pod-shuffle, and it turned out perfect for the sunny day and general good vibes. Have a listen, and make it part of your day, and trust me, everything will get a bit shinier.
Very nice and subtle beginning, but don’t let it fool you! I love discovering new, solid post-rock like this: enjoy!

A short (3 minute) post-rock number I put together whilst bored after work yesterday. I actually think it’s kind of cool and sort of caspian-like so I thought I may as well post it here; hopefully I’ll get round to adding some more sections to make it longer at some point.

“The World is our ____” - This Will Destroy You
I can’t believe I haven’t posted this yet. Possibilities. That’s what this song encapsulates. An incredible orchestration, set forth by one of the most classic post-rock bands there is: when you think of the genre, if you don’t think of This Will Destroy You, its time you do. Right up there with Mogwai for me, at least, when it comes to what would define the genre best without reaching too far. Enjoy the song for its contemplation and energy.
“Hit and Miss” - Au4
Here is a recent discovery I just made, a little known experimental band from Canada, one that a couple of my friends in my local band scene raved about as soon as I mentioned how much I loved the album. Au4, though they dabble with lyrics, focus their music much more on the ambiance of the piece, using words as elements of the music rather than the focus, making it post-rock enough for me. Truly emotionally evocative, “Hit and Miss” weaves a story of childhood long gone by, both melancholic and celebratory. No matter the mood, happy, sad, or somewhere in-between, this song will bring you back. Very summery feel as well: reminds me of childhood family vacations, I think. Reminiscent and calm, vibrant yet mellow, this is one of my favorite recent musical discoveries, and I hope you will think the same.
“Ghosts of the Garden City” - Caspian
A bit darker and emotion, heavily featuring guitar shreds and a good driving drum beat. Caspian is another classic post-rock band, and their name is often tossed around with the Likes of Mogwai or such similar melodic but driving bands. So sit back, and enjoy :)

“Hexed All” - Russian Circles
Album: Geneva (2009)
If you are looking for more intense, deep post-rock, Russian Circles is always a great place to look. With complex melodies and deep, driving sound, the emotion is always clear and present.
“Lower Your Eyelids to Die with the Sun” - M83
Hands down, one of the most epic post-rock ambient songs in existence. M83 is a lot better known for their hipster-indie “We Own the Sky” and their re-purposing of classic 80s sound. BUT. This gem, along with a lot of other post-rock, is some of their best work, in my opinion. If you don’t know M83 yet, after this song, I wager you will be searching for some discography. Wise Move. Amazing and epic, hard to rival, and simply beautiful, great for meditation, waking up, or falling asleep. From the album Before the Dawn Heals Us (2005).

When I listen to Heirs, the new album from Belfast rockers And So I Watch You From Afar, I think of bands from the last ten years like Fang Island and, minus some extreme tempo changes and helium-infused vocals, the Mae Shi—groups who toyed with toothy pop melodicism and applied it to song structures indebted to left-field instrumental rock structures that swept American indie around the mid-2000s. That is to say, this record feels familiar while coming across as totally fresh and invigorating, and if you didn’t manage to grab a strong cup of coffee this morning, Heirs will do you just fine.
