YĆkai (ćŠæȘ, ghost, phantom, strange apparition) are a class of supernatural monsters in Japanese folklore. The word yĆkai is made up of the kanji for âbewitching; attractive; calamityâ and âapparition; mystery; suspiciousâ⊠YĆkai range eclectically from the malevolent to the mischievous, or occasionally bring good fortune to those who encounter them.
Various yokai as they appear in Kimiyoshi Yasudaâs One-Hundred Ghost Stories (aka Yokai Monsters: 100 Monsters), 1968.

I was reading one of my favourite books this morning, 'Moominsummer Madness' by Tove Jansson, when I noticed this.Â
"Tove Jansson was born in Helsingfors, Finland, in 1914. [...] She lived alone on a small island in the gulf of Finland, where most of her books were written.'Â
This statement appears in all the Moomin books that I own.Â
But she didn't live alone, did she Puffin Books?Â
Tove Jansson spent her summers on Klovharu island with her long-term partner, Tuulikki PietilĂ€. Â
This is no secret. It's information widely referenced on the Moomin website, https://www.moomin.com/en/blog/klovharu-a-world-of-its-own/; on the Tove Jansson virtual museum website http://www.tovejansson.com/eng/saari.html ; and in this wonderful documentary https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSZKzLHI5wgÂ
So why has the love and companionship shared by Tove and Tuulikki over more than 30 years been erased from the Moomin books? Because they were both women. How sad that someone has decided it's more comfortable to claim that Tove lived alone, than admit that Tove Jansson loved a woman. What an insult to Tove, to Tuulikki and to all the Moomin readers.Â
Shame on you, Puffin Books, for trying to censor that love.Â
7 Things I Wish Parents Would Stop Teaching Their Children:
That nudity is inherently sexual
That people should be judged for their personal decisions
That yelling solves problems
That they are too young to be talking about the things theyâre already starting to ask questions about
That age correlates to importance
That interacting with someone of the opposite sex is inherently romantic
That the default for someone is straight and cisgender

âOnce, this woman told me that if I want to be a âragheadâ I should do it in my own country. I pointed out that this WAS my country, and if I wanted to wear a shoe on my head and tie the laces under my chin it wouldnât be any of her business. I think I was more offended by the fact that she referred to my scarf as a rag - it was a really nice scarf.â
Never mind that forty years ago, the CIA, under President John F. Kennedy, orchestrated a regime change in Baghdad. In 1963, after a successful coup, the Baâath party came to power in Iraq. Using lists provided by the CIA, the new Baâath regime systematically eliminated hundreds of doctors, teachers, lawyers, and political figures known to be leftists. An entire intellectual community was slaughteredâŠThe young Saddam Hussein was said to have had a hand in supervising the bloodbath. In 1979, after factional infighting within the Baâath Party, Saddam Hussein became the president of Iraq. In April 1980, while Hussein was massacring Shias, U.S. National Security Adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski declared, âWe see no fundamental incompatibility of interests between the United States and Iraq.â Washington and London overtly and covertly supported Saddam Hussein. They financed him, equipped him, and provided him with dual-use materials to manufacture weapons of mass destruction. They supported his worst excesses financially, materially, and morally. They supported the eight-year war against Iran and the 1988 gassing of Kurdish people in Halabja, crimes which fourteen years later were reheated and served up as reasons to justify invading Iraq. After the first Gulf War, the âAlliesâ fomented an uprising of Shias in Basra and then looked away while Saddam Hussein crushed the revolt and slaughtered thousands in an act of vengeful reprisal. The point is, if Saddam Hussein was evil enough to merit the most elaborate, openly declared assassination attempt in history (the opening move of Operation Shock and Awe), then surely those who supported him ought at least to be tried for war crimes? Why arenât the faces of U.S. and U.K. government officials on the infamous pack of cards of wanted men and women? Because when it comes to Empire, facts donât matter.

I found a baby pug at the pet store, she was everything I imagined and more.
And yet she could not forgive herself. Even as an adult, she wished only that she could go back and change things: the ungainly things sheâd worn, the insecurity sheâd felt, all the innocent mistakes she made.
